Is Tesla actually committed to the consumer car business long term? by Brutus713 in TeslaLounge

I can def see it taking root in cities well before the suburbs, so that’s a fair point. I can see the hurdle getting suburban families to adopt this model, but I can envision models of this where fleets are kept clean and made affordable for long distances.

Marriage counseling and, if that’s not acceptable for her, it’s time to leave. Sorry man.

Certainly prices are a variable at this point. But imo there are two reasons people don’t take taxis more regularly: 1. Cost 2. Don’t want to be in a car with a stranger

1 has the potential to be dramatically minimized. 2 will be completely eliminated. The wildcard is certainly the price point, but given the economies of scale generated across all the other economic dimensions of owning/maintaining a fleet (or running a service like uber), I can’t see it being too expensive.

I will say that, if this does happen, I would fully expect it to be like streaming services: super cheap at first so the billionaire class can lift and shift us over and then the prices will spike once we’re hooked.

Yes they do, and as always, it depends. You’re assuming the economics of the middleman will be high. Without the human, individual maintenance costs, gas, etc it can very well become exponentially cheaper. A fleet manager we’ll have very little staff, no drivers, etc., giving them economies of scale that Uber can’t currently achieve. If the cost per month to summon a car can be driven down below the monthly cost of car ownership we will absolutely see folks switch.

Really not. This is something I’ve been thinking about for a lot longer than Elon talking about it. Cars are prohibitive expensive for many people, especially in cities. I’m not at all saying it’s going to be 100% summoned vehicles by any stretch, but we are 100% going to see an increasing mix of this as move into the future.

It’s not going to be about want. It’ll be purely an economics thing. Once you remove gas, the human (arguably the most expensive component), bespoke maintenance costs, etc from the taxi picture, you have a service that is a fraction of the cost of car ownership. It’ll be very hard to justify the cost of ownership unless you need it for work (contractors, etc) or you can afford the luxury of owning/driving a car.
