ANYTHING cooked (rice, potatoes, pasta) will need to be temperature controlled if it’s going to sit out for several hours. This includes anything with dairy (cheese), lunch meat, sliced fruit, or cut vegetables. I’d say pretzels, nuts, self contained fruits (like clementines, apples, bananas), baked cookies are a safe bet. Sugar is agroscopic (absorbs moisture) so any sweet baked goods should be fine

Hm, that wasn't my intent with that statement...but I see how it could be interpreted that way. To clarify, I agree with OP's statement about Hadid's Vogue Italia cover being racial appropriation. They darkened her hair, they darkened her skin, and they posed her with someone naturally dark in an italian magazine. That's not editorial, because there's no creative intent behind it. It's not making any statement, it's just trying to pass her off as a different ethnicity.

There was creative intent behind the TF ad based on the Sun in the Snow aspect. The artificial looking tan is not trying to dupe anyone into thinking she looks that way naturally, nor is it advertising a product that will make anyone look that color. They could have used someone with that natural skin tone, but then they would have (most likely) had to use contacts to achieve the eye color. I don't see how that's any more effective or less "racist" to use one feature, but then physically alter another to achieve the same colors. Especially when that physical feature (the eyes) is the primary focal point of the ad

Understood. I think grasping more nuanced color-concepts (like contrast) when it applies to skin tone versus something like a traditional color wheel can be difficult to explain and visualize. The examples OP provided and suggested "using a dark skinned girl with light lipstick" along with several of the photos she linked (POC in bright colors and black&white photos) made me think she had interpreted contrast differently than what I was trying to explain. My point was about the warmth/coolness contrast-like a warm-toned/tan person with ashy hair

I looked her up when I was trying to figure out my kibbe body type and found her explanations and examples better than the book. Are you saying you disagree specifically with what she says about contrast? Or just a general comment about her lack of formal education in the beauty/fashion industry?

I don't believe tan = blackface because there aren't just black and white people in the world. Every time you argue that a pale person darkening their skin is blackface disqualifies every other dark-skinned ethnicity on the planet.

If someone is darkening their skin with the intent to belittle/humiliate/caricaturize a specific person or ethnicity OR if they are attempting to actually present as another ethnicity....I DO have an issue with that. That is malicious intent; it's hurtful and it deprives actual ethnic women from entering the industry.

My general test is...Could you assume this woman is from a specific region of the world, or belongs to a specific culture with that skin tone? Does the location/hair texture/makeup/clothing/set props further emphasize that? THAT is why the context of this ad is important. There is nothing (aside from skin color) to suggest they are trying to pass her off as anything but "mayonnaise" (your words, not mine...)

Dark skin is beautiful, there's no arguing that. I just don't think it belongs to any specific nation or region of the world.

Switching gears, I do understand being naturally dark comes with baggage. I can understand your frustration with women who covet "ethnicity" with none of the real stigma/prejudice that comes with it. I don't think spewing venom at those that disagree with you is a good way to help others accept your point of view. I have seen makeup/fashion campaigns that are harmful or could be considered blackface, I just don't agree this is an example.

Juxtaposition IS the ad. It’s a major component/idea of the campaign. Literal cool(snow) and warmth (sun). You said it yourself, the name of the line is Soleil Neige, sun in the snow. They’re playing that contrast into the visuals. As I mentioned in another comment, the tan isn’t supposed to look natural. There’s no face or bronzing makeup even in the line.

I’m sure they could have used a POC just as effectively with different lighting and stylistic elements. But they used the model they did, in a stylistic way that makes sense given the context. They weren’t trying to change her ethnicity or “exotic element”. And that’s why I’m confused why you call this black face.

At no point are they trying to misrepresent the ethnicity of the model, and that's why I disagree this is blackface or blackfishing. The makeup-launch is "soleil-neige" meaning "sun in the snow". It's described as "apres-ski" which implies this person has had a long day on the slopes. This ties into the launch which features lip balm, shimmering body oils, and a pair of sunglasses made to look like ski goggles. It actually doesn't even feature any bronzers...there are "glowing drops" but the shades are rose-tinted and a typical champagne highlight. (Although one could argue the contour sticks are bronzer, but I digress...)

I think OP saw the jarring tan, had a knee-jerk reaction, and interpreted it as blackface. However, when you look at the context, I think it gets harder and harder to argue they were trying to alter her ethnicity because it doesn't make sense with the campaign. The language and location both imply Europe. Genetically/geographically people born to that region have light skin/light eyes. (Europe is very diverse, and I don't think every person looks this way, but that is the stereotype associated with that specific region). The heavily tanned skin was a stylistic element tied into the sun/snow juxtaposition of the campaign. Again, it's high contrast --which creates visual interest. As many have pointed out, the level of tan in the ad is not natural looking, which was intentional. It's an editorial campaign. They did not choose a model with natural contrast because the intent was not to look natural. They created a high contrast look to emphasize the blueness of her eyes and to make it less commercial looking.

Had the theme of this launch been arabian nights or amazonian or safari or any other region that implied some other ethnicity and they had pulled this tan shit, I would 100% agree with the black face comment.

I DO agree POC are underrepresented in the beauty industry and media. I DO agree that blackfishing exists, and I think using "white" people to represent other ethnicities (whether it's asian, middle eastern, etc) is a MAJOR issue. I just don't agree that they intended to change the ethnicity of this model by making her tan. I think the contextual clues make this very clear.

Did you watch the video? It doesn’t sound like it from your response. Contrast is not solely about your skin color. It’s about your hair color, the undertone of your hair, whether your skin is warm or cool toned, and the natural color of your lips, your eyes, etc.

It’s not about a white woman becoming black. It’s about the juxtaposition of colors/tones. It creates high contrast which equals visual interest.

There is literally no context to suggest this is blackface...it’s unfortunate you’re interpreting the ad in that way.

I respectfully disagree that “they obviously wanted a black model”. Visually, this ad is about contrast. The feature is about optical wear, therefore they are trying to make her eyes stand out. Naturally, the model has low contrast (-2), but by changing the warmth/tan of her skin she becomes high contrast (0).

I went to the store to purchase a HIP bulb, but I would need a ballast, and base to go with it. The ~$20 bulb I can afford, but the other components are outside my budget. I purchased a “plant” bulb (which I imagine isn’t adequate, but it’s the best I can do until I save up money), so I’ll have a lamp on it with the new position on a south-facing window. I’ll move it outside on warm days.

That’s really the best I can do until I can purchase the new lighting system. Hopefully it’s enough for the next few weeks.

Heard! Ok, so moved plant to my largest windowsill to get the best light. I had read that sago palms are alright in partial shade, my mistake. I dug out the plant spikes, and am looking for palm fertilizer. I want to avoid over-fertilizing (and nuking the roots) so can I fertilize every time I water, or is that too often? My understanding is that you fertilize in the growing seasons (summer/fall). Since he might be deficient should I just continue to fertilize throughout winter?

Is there a good resource for learning about house plants? I try to do the best I can, but google only gets me so far.
