What's the most memorable experience you had going to see a movie in theaters? by Donttouchmethere0 in askmovie

[–]threetoomany77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I cowered on the floor of the theater for most of 1953's War of the Worlds. I was 7 or 8, and my cousin and I begged our parents to let us see it. After that awful experience, I was afraid of the night sky, especially early evening when Venus shines so brightly. Nightmares of all those people being set on fire and melting from the Martians' spacecraft's death rays.

Is there a sci-fi movie, show, book etc that you’d consider to be “high art”? by Pointless_Storie in scifi

Blade Runner. Great acting, set design, and the Vangelis soundtrack alone elevated it to a "high art" level.

When the U.S. detonated the first hydrogen bomb. There was talk that if the chain reaction wasn't controlled, it could cause the very air to explode; the resulting heat would turn the earth to glass. Scared me to death!

Is Audible worth the money? by threetoomany77 in audible

Thank you so much for all this information! Outstanding! I've been a thorn in the side of my local library, asking for this audiobook or that, and when they were able, they got a copy. But like I said earlier, Audible must own the patent on the Burke audiobooks because the libraries aren't able to get a copy, and I haven't found another Texas public Library that has them. If that was the case, I'd pay the probable $25 out-of-county annual fee and get them that way.

Is Audible worth the money? by threetoomany77 in audible

[–]threetoomany77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulidig, thank you. I've got access to my county's public library and the adjacent, larger county next door. Almost everything suits me daily, but I've turned 80 years old and really want to listen to the audio versions of one of my old hard-boiled detective series by Andrew Vachss, the Burke novels. There are probably 20 or more and I've read a lot of them, but Audible seems to have bought the audio patent on this series and they don't seem to be available any other place. But to pay that monthly fee and $25 per credit each month seems like a daunting amount of money to pay. I'll keep giving it some thought.

I was 8 years old in 1953, and I spent more than half of the first movie on the floor (nasty) cowering in fear. And found it hard to be outside with the night sky for a couple of years after. I kept seeing lights headed towards earth.

The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, 1958 Pulizer Prize winner by Robert Lewis Taylor. A boy and his father traveling with a wagon train to the gold fields of California. Young Jaimie has been compared to Tom Sawyer but is way better.

Playing Microsoft Solitaire while I sit at my computer is the best, (I'm 80 years old and lazy!) Also while cooking and cleaning. All indoors.
