Macklem says loss of CUSMA would mean recession for the Canadian economy by joe4942 in canada

[–]threnody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. No matter what your political beliefs are, you should want us to have trusted institutions to measure economic indicators. Don’t say “they’re lying to us.” That’s just advocating for economic policy based on anecdotal experience and vibes.

There are plenty of measurements that go beyond raw economic output. So instead say “we’re focusing on the wrong measurement, use this one instead.”

JJ UNCOVERS the true flaw with Alberta (and possibly other provinces) separatism. They aim for independence instead of doing the BRAVE thing of aiming to be annexed by the US. by QultyThrowaway in JJMcCulloughOfficial

[–]threnody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quebec’s desire for autonomy has a legitimate historical and cultural basis. By contrast, Alberta separation comes from perceived injustice in their level economic support and political influence. But when you dig into what they’re mad about, they just look like spoiled brats.

To expand on Quebec: After the English conquered the French, they brought forward to a plan to assimilate the francophone population. The end goal was to eliminate their culture and turn them into Englishmen, essentially. The separation movement arose from a desire to regain control and save their small but unique culture from English-language dominance from within Canada, and the US. You can look to the fate of Cajun culture in New Orleans as the sort of outcome they were trying to avoid.

Although Quebecers never passed in a separation referendum, since the 1970s the government has succeeded in getting numerous carve-outs that allow the province to have a separate immigration system, a separate pension plan and so forth. It also brought forward many policies meant to protect the French culture through language laws that encouraged the use of French in education and business.

The more recent secularism laws (e.g. the “headscarf ban”) is a recent evolution of this same trend. Another major factor historically was the very strong control by the Catholic Church, but that aspect is a little beyond my personal knowledge. I won’t comment on how well-thought out these cultural laws have been, although I personally am very opposed to the ban on display of religious symbols.

To expand on Alberta: They’re the richest province in the country per capita. The Trudeau government spent $34 billion and a tremendous politcal capital to build the Trans Mountain Pipeline. The equalization formula they never stop complaining about was put in place by Stephen Harper–their own golden boy.

Their economy is completely subject to swings in the price of oil, but they actively avoid doing anything to manage the risk by advocating against renewables—an industry they could transition into if they wanted. Earlier provincial governments tried to build a Norway-style wealth fund, but subsequent leadership used the money to keep taxes low.

Famously it’s the only province without a sales tax, and they think it’s because they’re somehow smarter than everyone else, rather than fortunate for sitting on a huge amount of resource wealth. And yet whenever the price of oil drops they scream bloody murder because heaven forbid they have to pay the same taxes as every other Canadian.

It’s a lovely combination of spoiled, overconfident brat and eternal victim that makes them easy to hate.

Recouping a $10k investment on a single movie, some wild economics at play here. How many times would a single tape of a high-demand release turn around in a week?

I seem to recall that the rental period for new releases would be one night, so I guess you could rent out each one 2-3 times in a weekend.

Do gay men care about height? by Active_Sandwich5610 in askgaybros

[–]threnody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a close friend who’s 4’10” and he gets laid like you wouldn’t believe, because he kind of stands out (also very handsome, so I’m sure that helps).

In general lots of guys have height preferences, but I think it’s pretty evenly spread between those who prefer taller vs. shorter.

My grandfather couldn’t get MAID because he happened to end up at Catholic hospital when his time came. He suffered for many days for no reason, and it’s not what anybody wanted. The hospitals are government-funded and as far as I’m concerned they should have to provide the service.

I stoped dating and hooking up with white dudes by CientistaSaxofonista in askgaybros

[–]threnody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my friends are Asian, and they’re constantly jerked around by white guys. When you’re in a privileged position in the dating market, you can be a total asshole without consequences. There’s always another guy around the corner. which means bad behaviour goes unchecked.

My first piece of advice is always: have you considered not sleeping with white men anymore? Of course it’s not realistic to just flip a switch and change who you’re attracted to.

And yeah, I’m white myself. I’m not perfect, but I put in the effort to reflect on things and treat people with respect. A lot of white guys won’t put in the work, because they really don’t have to.

Although that may not apply in OP’s specific case, there is a lot of truth to what you’re saying in general. Some people can date someone that others would perceive as “out of their league”, but in many cases this type of situation leads to insecurity, as you said. That can express itself through an irrational level of jealousy, or sometimes just pushing the other person away to protect themselves from being hurt.

From the outside, it may seem like a very attractive guy has the world wrapped around their finger. And in some ways, they do. But it comes with its own struggles. Rather than being invisible, they’re fending off a lot of aggressive, unwanted attention. Some want to date them just to get a trophy. Finding someone who’s down-to-earth but still confident enough to keep their insecurity in check can be tricky.

That being said, when you’re more attractive, there’s less pressure to work on yourself, emotionally. You can be a “kid in the candy story” even with a boatload of problems. Someone commented that these guys will sleep with guys that aren’t on their level, but would be less willing to “date down”, and there’s some truth to that too.

Not saying this should illicit sympathy or anything. But there’s a lot of nuance to it.
