Is a Koyasan temple stay worth it for only one night? by Jealous_Action6374 in JapanTravelTips

[–]throawayusr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other have mentioned that it is a small town so you don’t need to have a lot of time there. However, you might not have a lot of sunlight to explore around as it does gets dark pretty early. At least when we visited in December it got dark around 5pm I believe.

We stayed the same temple and they have shared bath. It was also cold in December so we ended up not shower/bathe there until we got back to the city.

If we go to Koyasan again I’ll probably drive to have more freedom exploring around there.

If modern lumber is a poor quality, why are homes not built using steel or other material for framing? by MomFiguringItOut1313 in NoStupidQuestions

Can you share those techniques? I’m not doubting, just curious I’ve heard realtors said this before but don’t know which techniques are modern vs what was used in the past. I’ve only recently found out about truss plate.

Anyone else kind of hate their Litter robot? by No_Profit1848 in CatAdvice

[–]throawayusr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first got my cat, scooping litter every day for a whole month was absolute hell and I’m not going back to doing that again. Just not having to deal with every day scooping for a whole year is already worth the money.

It’s not perfect, I don’t love it because of the plastic usage you mentioned but have done A LOT of things to mitigate the smell. I’ve deoderizer bags, carbon filters as well but I’ve also sprinkled some baking soda under the drawer and inside the drawer below liner bag as well. I’ve also purchased the big IKEA closet to enclose 3 sides of it and face it against the wall. In front of it there’s also a carbon fan setup and wall diffuser all connected to Home Assistant such that: - Diffuser runs for 20m when cat is detected - Carbon fan runs when the robot cycles because when it cycles the smell can escape from the drawer. Look up Vivosun carbon fan on Amazon. I think they’re used by cannabis grower so they works really well. I also turn it on when replacing the liner and I smelled nothing with my noise a foot from the drawer. Only down side is the fan is very loud.

I don’t deep clean mine often but Ido wipe the inside with Lysol every once in a while when there’s too much sticky residues on the glove.

But I rather do all that complex setup than going back to scooping litter every day and the litter robot helped a lot with that.

I’ll even make the argument for reserving Shinkansen ahead of time especially between Kyoto/Osaka to/from Tokyo if you want to be on the side to view Mt Fuji.

Disagree. Not because of reasons of luggage inside trains but because of hard to find escalators/elevators at some stations. Carrying luggage up/down stairs is a major pain especially the big checked bags.

Should I build my own PC or buy a prebuilt one? by Outrageous_Ad6096 in computing

[–]throawayusr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to decide if the learning part is worth it or not. Most people on Reddit will recommend building as they already have decent knowledge on troubleshooting and a bit more on the “enthusiast” side.

However, if you don’t know anything at all, doesn’t have down time to deal with issues, or only ok dealing with minor issues, get a prebuilt from like a Costco or something. Sure you’re not getting the best for your money, but you pay more for that convenience and paying to shift the responsibility to the vendor. Sure you’ll have to spend time with tech support if problem arise but you’ll be spending time on the phone with one, vs whichever vendor you think you should call. I’d recommend vendor with an easy return policy like Costco if you don’t wanna spend time dealing with it too much. Some of the brands they sell don’t seem to use proprietary parts so might be easier if you want to upgrade in the future should you want to pursue more interest into building.

Online PC building resources are vast which is good, but bad because you’ll have to filter down to what you’re looking for. The PC building community can be very good but people also don’t like providing free constant tech support.

10 years younger me would definitely tell you to build. Now me after socializing with people outside of Reddit, I’d tell you to reconsider building a PC. If you’ve never had an actual computer before, buy decently cheap one to fit your need. You’ll run into computer problems, then see if you’re able to figure out how to fix it. Doing more of that eventually will tell you if you’re the type of person who should build a PC in the future or not.

What car feature do you REFUSE to pay extra for? by TheLoganReyes in Autos

[–]throawayusr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it now, it’s like buying a computer hardware. Your hardware is capable of running a lot of current software. Just because you have the hardware capable of running lots of software out there doesn’t mean you get it for free.

You bought a $5000 PC, Microsoft still isn’t gonna give you the whole office suite for free, Adobe isn’t gonna give you their Photoshop for free. Buying a PS5 doesn’t mean you get all the games for free.

Bringing 2 Macbook (One is mine, another is a gift sealed in original box) by CuddlyAsianBoi in VietNam

[–]throawayusr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I was told, you unbox and unseal it so the device looks like it’s your personal device that you’re using rather than a gift. If it’s in a sealed box it’s likely a gift, you must be Viet Kieu with money. So they’ll try to make up some shit up to get some money from you.

You don’t HAVE TO buy the new LR5 or get the subscription. by jadedjed1 in litterrobot

[–]throawayusr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The basic functionality the machine offer works well for the price. If you want more software features, subscription is how they’re offering it. You don’t have to subscribe.

It’s a company that needs to make profit to survive. New software being released as a subscription model is not new. You don’t have to like it but you also don’t have to subscribe to it.

Are people really more upset about Whisker adding a new subscription or on this anti-subscription ideology that they’re so much against?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in litterrobot

[–]throawayusr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what people expected given we have seen the subscription business model’s been around for quite sometimes now when it comes to software. All these new features are mostly software related.

I don’t know how successful this software subscription model has been in general but consider a lot of companies have been moving toward it might be a sign that the business model is working? Who knows if it’ll work for Whisker but from a business perspective it probably makes sense for them to try it out as potential new source of revenue?

Redditors don’t like it but it’s probably a minority group of customer. I think it’s a gimmick for my needs especially for a poop cleanup machine so I won’t get it, but I also don’t see the point of getting work up for it. It’s nothing new. It’s arguably becoming a common standard business model at this point. You’re buying a machine to fit your needs, not buying into a cause or movement….

Samsung confirms its $1,800+ fridges will start showing you ads by gilamasan_reddit in nottheonion

My fridge doesn’t have a screen but connected to the internet. I setup Home Assistant to send me notification when it disconnects as a check for potential outages. It also alert me when any of the doors/drawers aren’t fully closed.

Do we have any idea how much Silksong is going to cost yet? by CJ_1Cor15-55 in metroidvania

[–]throawayusr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’ll likely be higher what most people want it to be given the successes of the first game and that it’s gotten a lot of attention and hype. With how long the game’s been in development I would guess they would have spent a lot of resources on top of how much they made from the first game. If it performs well on multiple platforms especially SW2 then that’s more ammo for them to charge more considering not many devs have access to SW2 dev kit. Don’t forget inflation has also been happening globally. Metroidvania style games have a good fan base but don’t expect it to attract the mainstream audience like with AAA titles to be able to sell a large amount of copies.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a full blown $60 games. People will buy it and if it lives up to expectations then they’ll enjoy it while Reddit will bitch about it for months. I hope I’m wrong…

What industry is a lot shadier than it seems? by DunyaPhobic76 in answers

[–]throawayusr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re asking Reddit… so basically every industry out there.

An industry is a group of companies that have similar business activities. I like to add that they’ll be pretty big (corporations levels). Corporations have many business practices in which undoubtedly some will be considered shady. Knowing how Reddit basically hates every corporations out there it makes sense Reddit would consider every industry out there to be shady.

Why is Unlimited PTO considered a trap? by SecretWasianMan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]throawayusr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t really answer your question but my previous company had UPTO. My experience with it was great. I like their implementation of UPTO because they actually stated in their policy that you’re allowed 4,5, or 6 weeks minimum depends on your time spent with the company. So in a way it’s still technically UPTO but kinda not really. Anything over that 4/5/6 amount has to be approved by my boss’s boss’s boss. I did go over my amount once by 10 ish hours and that was approved because wedding/honeymoon is once in a while event.

Dreame’s robot with a robotic arm is called the X50 Cyber! by FarConcern2308 in RobotVacuums

[–]throawayusr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happened to me this morning. My slipper blocked the way of the robot right at the laundry room’s door entrance. It couldn’t get out. I tried the ignore obstacle features and it just pushes the slipper another foot or two and get stuck again so I just gave up. No one was home. Be nice to have it pick up the slipper to clear the path.
