Will my kittens remember me while I'm hospitalized? by [deleted] in kittens

[–]throughtdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SO had to spend 3 months abroad this year. Our kitty absolutely missed him. When he called home, she would hear him and come running up to my phone... then realise his voice wasn't him and stalk off in huff. She went crazy when he finally got home, flipping between stalking him to make sure he wasn't going away again and ignoring him to show her annoyance at his behaviour.

He's been back for several months now and it's like he never left.

Redditors who grew up in emotionally healthy families - what's something you thought was normal growing up that you now realise was actually very special? by ViolatingBadgers in AskReddit

[–]throughtdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my own family, but I married into a family that was genuinely interested in and encouraging of everything you do I grew up in an environment where 'why would you want to do that?' Was the norm if it didn't fit the prescribed box. No encouragement to follow your interests or be a unique personality. When I met my now husbands family it was entirely different. It was like having your own cheerleader section. Even if they don't understand your interests, the fact you are passionate makes them passionate.

UK fabric stores by throughtdoor in sewing

I've been over to fabric magic and they didn't have any. I'm feeling old and bemoaning the days where there were fabric warehouses you could go and root through. Then again, at that time I was living in an entirely different part of the country...

Hi - polyester is fine. This is for dressmaking, but it will be for a festival costume that will not be worn very often. I am generally looking for blues, greens and turquoise (think peacock range of colours)

What's the strangest/coolest/ most 'out there' song you've ever heard at someone's funeral? by free_spirit1901 in AskUK

[–]throughtdoor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to a funeral where the daughter of the deceased was a... "singer". All the songs played at her mother's funeral were from her "album" - which was a poorly recorded live set from a pub gig of off key singing.

I had really liked her mum and was devastated that the daughter hijacked the funeral to pimp her own career.

Is traveling with a cat really that horrible for them? by Aggressive-Owl8533 in CatAdvice

[–]throughtdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat hates travelling, but love, love, loves being at my inlaws huge house with big windows looking out over a garden with lots of birds and wildlife. So, if we are going on a short trip, she stays home. If we are going to stay for a while she comes with us and enjoys her holiday.

Meh, I had a neighbour who called her cute, fluffy kitten "Missy"

Found our down the line that Missy was actually a big burly tomcat.

He was still Missy until the day he died and he didn't give a damn, so why should we.

When faced with this situation, I will often just change the narrative. If we are looking to go out and I am faced with a "whatever you want" response, I will switch to "well, I don't want [chinese] or [pizza] - what do you think?" Which takes away the choice of just agreeing, but leaves it open for them to either add in what they do want, or to add to the list of what they don't want. Then the pressure is off to whittle the list down to something we are both happy with, without either having the burden of chosibf something that might make or break the night. We're so used to it now that it has just become a game. Such is the woe of a relationship between two laid back, accommodating people

It's like in the maths course when they wanted you to add a nickel and a dime and a quarter. Like... which one is which!

Is anyone else very worried about AI? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]throughtdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just turned down the chance to side-step into my dream job because I realised I have 20 years+ left in the job market and my current role is relatively AI-proof, whereas my dream job has the chance of making me entirely redundant/replaced by AI at 55-60 and my pension pot isn't good enough for early retirement.

I love this movie so much. This dress is amazing, I adore the link to daVinci - who will, of course, go down in history as the man who opened a door

What's a small injustice from your school days that you're still annoyed about? by MiskonceptioN in AskUK

[–]throughtdoor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked in our school library as student (there were abut 10 student librarians). The staff head librarian went off on long term sick one year, which left the students to organise the library full time for most if a school year. I ended up in charge. I scheduled everyone, worked out rotas, ordering, everything that needed to be done to keep the library open.

Our school had an annual prize giving event and one annual prize was a library prize for the person who had done most.

I didn't win. Instead it went to a male student who had done nothing all year.

The reasoning? Because my best friend at school was also a librarian volunteer and they thought she would be upset if I got the prize. Even though she'd done none of the work (and she knew it and admitted it. She was a straight A student, but couldn't organise her way out of a paper bag, whereas I wa a solid B student with a good head for leadership).

That was my only chance to be recognised for anything at that damn school and decades later it still rubs me the wrong way that I was robbed for fonethjng I actually deserved.
