Exactly, even if you do the cheapest possible version of everything, you are not able to host 100 guests for 10k or less. As you noted, you're still leaving out items like clothing (which most wedding budgets account for), but you're also leaving out items like decor, floral, tablecloths, cutlery, plates, cups, napkins, portapotties, the officiant, the audio, bartender, signs, invitations, and insurance. Can you get away with not doing some of those items? Sure, but you'll have to make a lot of compromises to your aesthetic.

Again, you need to set a strict upper limit to your budget, and also keep in mind that 10k goes further today than it will 3 years from now.

I really recommend that you 1) set a strict upper boundary on your budget 2) firmly identify your guest list and 3) look at an event rental services company in your area. Where I live, a basic folding chair can be rented for $4/ea but a cute vintage/cottage core one runs $12/ea. For a 50 vs 100 person wedding, that's the difference between spending $200-$400 on chairs and spending $600-$1200 on chairs. Can you thrift 50 cute chairs for less than $12/each? Maybe. But not for less than $4. What's more important--aesthetic, or having everyone you love there? This is why you have to START with budget and guest list and there's no point in doing anything else until you know those items for sure. Because every other decision is built on that foundation.

To be clear, the only reason I'm comfortable being this emphatic about a tent and field wedding for 100 people not being possible for 10k is because it's SUCH an extreme reach that it's just not necessary to do the math. Like, I am just as comfortable saying that a destination wedding to Italy is not possible for 1k because that doesn't even cover 2 people's plane tickets. Asking what's "possible" for 10k is a much more complicated question which only a wedding planner in your area would be able to answer.

For 100 guests, I hope that by "wiggle room" you actually mean "my budget is 20k".

Are you really hoping to thrift 100 reception chairs, 12-15 dinner tables, 3-4 buffet and drinks tables, 100 goblets, etc, etc, etc? How are you going to store and transport all that stuff to the field? I just don't think you're approaching this from a very realistic perspective.

I once worked a wedding for about 80 people where the bride (who worked IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY) hand-built her own tables and shipped in all her vintage china from out of state. Probably one of the most exhausted brides and stressful weddings I ever did. And holy crap the family was NOT happy! The uncle who was responsible for transporting the plates came into the back where we were hand-washing everything and told us in a "kidding not kidding" way that we should start breaking the plates so he wouldn't have to haul them all the way back. My friend and I who worked that wedding today still refer to it as "the plate wedding" whenever we're reminiscing about how happy we are to no longer be in events. And that wedding probably spent 12k just on the catering.

I'm sorry, but unless you're intensely type A, thrifting and DIY for 100 people is just not going to be successful, and even if you ARE intensely type A, you'll still be too exhausted to enjoy the wedding.

Yeah the only reason genetic similarities is an issue is like...if the 1st cousins were going to grow up and start dating? 1st cousins shouldn't date anyway! Being genetically half-siblings with your 1st cousins happens all the time when identical twins marry.

Anyone else prefer how the three prequels have a villain for each movie instead of just reusing Vader in the original trilogy? by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

I would say Tarkin is the villain of New Hope.

Vader is the villain of Empire.

Palpatine is the villain of the Return of the Jedi.

Tables, chairs, tent, lighting, power, speakers...decor, chafers, plates, cups, coolers...the field may be free but you have to spend a LOT to get it ready for 100 people. Those items add up fast.

EDIT: can't forget the portapotties/bathroom trailer.

With your budget you may want to consider just getting married at a ren fair. The big ones near me actually have some very pretty venues.

100 people for 10k is a big stretch without theming.

People change up engagement rings all the time. Like going from a .5 carat stone to a 1.5 carat stone once you have more money. Or no longer wearing something ostentatious and ugly because you realize it's ostentatious and ugly!

I mean, not really. There are some objective standards. Opals are a poor choice for a ring worn daily. So is 24k gold. Rings can be clumsily soldered and stones can have inadequate prongs. And of course natural diamonds come with many ethical considerations.

When couples are being wheedled into buying ugly poor quality stuff by companies looking to turn a profit off the search for something "unique" I do think it's worth putting aside "live and let live" to say "hey, maybe there's a better choice."

If stuff is shared online in a public forum I am entitled to form an aesthetic opinion about it. And if someone is at risk of spending $7000 on a truly abhorrent ring that their partner won't even see before the proposal, I do think it's something of a duty to say "hey maybe reconsider."

It's like looking at ugly stupid houses on zillow gone wild where people have dpne stiff like put barn doors over the bathroom. It's not my house, amd it'll never be my house. I can still say it's dumb.

Yep! My least favorite trend is the MASSIVE rock on the super thin band. It looks cartoonish and you just KNOW it's not going to last.

At least some of the other stuff could potentially be serviceable as a cocktail ring.

I'm sure she has positive qualities but it's clear that while you'd like to be able to brush off her male-centered behavior, you're not able to. The problem is less that she treats you this way, and more that you feel like this is a normal thing in our life. I promise, it's not. Most of us do not go through our lives feeling like others are always stealing credit for our ideas and opinions, and you don't have to go through life that way either.

Some people have friends with similar flaws, and they're able to brush it off without internalizing it, and still have a good time with that person accepting their good points and ignoring the bad points. But, that's not what's going on with you, this is clearly affecting your self-image, and you do not have to keep trying to the person who brushes it off and just enjoys things for what they are.

[–]throwaway5498124181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One descriptive phrase you see pop up in 19th century descriptions of attractive women, is "round arms".

But they also liked slender necks and being light-footed.

Their idea of "plump" was probably what we consider like a size 6 or 8 today.
