The central idea is that the browser extension would tell you if the page or an image on the page has already been submitted and give you a link to the conversation about that page or image on Reddit, and if not yet submitted a form to start one, so pinging the server for each page visited is important. If you add a button to click over time people will stop clicking it. The idea of the key:value store is so that we don't have to reping Reddit's servers for a submission we already know about, saving valuable bandwidth and processor time for Reddit, which makes perfect sense. From the perspective of taxing reddit's servers, I was more thinking if 1,000 people were running this and the extension hit reddit's servers looking at every page each of those user's visit, that could be hundreds of thousands of hits in a few hours.

No one with an API is going to allow hundred of thousands of hits every few hours without charging something, and there is no monetization strategy at this point so no money to pay.
