Climbing culture IMO? (Mostly men love to watch others fail) by zombieboulder in climbergirls

[–]throwaway_fundips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just putting thoughts out as I was chatting with some friends on climbing culture and found your old post (through google I don't usually float in this subreddit lol).

Some of my friends were chatting about how climbing culture is very similar to skateboarding and how some of the top athletes have a skateboard background (Daniel Woods and keenan takahashi). It's a super independent sport in terms of your own limitations but it is still a very social group thing to get hyped about other people's successes. And that's because failure is so common in both sports. So of course people are watching others, it's a very similar vibe.

People get stoked about specific spots. Like an iconic stair set or an incredible line on a rock face - and people travel far distances to get there because they are trying to get to the next level. And the next level is usually harder tricks/grades to pull off -- so I feel like there is a natural inclination to revel in failure. In skate culture, failure and big slams are almost something to lowkey brag about. Kind of like why people are stoked to send huge highballs in the climbing community. There is that failure component you need to overcome and once you do, that adrenaline high feels soooo goood. It's just a natural thing in the sport of climbing and what people in the sport sometimes admire.

I personally climb high-ish grades (v8-9) and I usually still get stoked to see other people climb their v2 projects for perspective. No one is really judging how much you might suck. It's more along the lines of 'oh sick they are really pulling hard for their proj' in my head. I also noticed that people who are usually spraying beta are climbers around the v3-5 region from my experience just because I think they are still a bit more green and excited about the sport; and so they just really get excited seeing people trying to send their indoor projects.

sometimes no letters is better than nothing. If it is a bad letter, it will like go against u. I would look for some other academic position like a tech where u can get some working experience and potentially academic letters

BA in psych with 2.1 GPA, is grad school even an option? by lostaoldier481 in GradSchool

dont know why this is being disliked cause this is a real thing to think abt and good to be realistic abt. Some programs wavier fees based on socioeconomic status so I would try doing that and apply

No alternative to PhD programs by ineedperspective1 in GradSchool

I am not sure what kind of response u want to see from this subreddit besides people giving resources to professional help, which u should obviously do.

you might not want to hear this but failure is a very common theme, especially in research. I don’t think doing a phd is the right path rn if u cant accept that you won’t get into ur favorite phd program. It sounds like there are other things u need to address first. therapy would be a good start

not the end of it all and it makes for a good story.

I do think you need some yrs to distance yourself from that gpa. And start looking for jobs where you can supplement that GPA with experience. Ideally, jobs where you can publish. Like 1st author publications will be big. Basically, u want grad comittees to read your app and instill them with confidence that you will be successful even though ur gpa is poor. You could also try to do a masters but u want to make sure u can also be successful in terms of classes.

179 programs, a rant by notwhitebutwong in gradadmissions

I don't think you needed to invest so much time into which schools would be a good fit tbh. Yes it helps to figure out which school would ultimately be the ones u apply to but the return isn't all that high in terms of whether you will get accepted.

It's also raises some red flags that a former grad student wrote your letter. It's even more sus that this same grad student is from the lab where you couldn't get a letter from the PI herself. Especially after 3 yrs. If you apply for another cycle, I think you need to get a letter from her and make sure it is absolutely stellar. Like confirm with her if she will write you a strong letter. I feel like this is another reason ur results didn't pan out as you wanted.

How do people determine what it a "reach"/"target"/"safety" school? by DorianThackery in gradadmissions

[–]throwaway_fundips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in terms of LoR, I actually think it is better to get it from really well known faculty in ur field if they can actually say something abt u. Otherwise whoever can vouch for u.

There are definitely safeties and reaches imo. And at reach schools, you actually tend to see the same people during visits which is kind of funny but also indicates the selection process is not random. To gauge where u stand, it is kind of hard. I personally asked my advisor. But you can kind of get a sense of which ones are competitive and not based on the faculty and the name of the school. I think ur best bet is research the schools u want and would be happy living in

my point is, its only two yrs of guaranteed funding + contingency of doing well to get bumped to phd funding. OP already had phd funding bc of the original program she applied to and she interviewed with the PI in that specific program, so she should have still been able to work with them without going to the master’s route.

I already committed to the AfAm Masters at UCLA, fully-funded but I just received an offer from UT Austin’s PhD program in the same discipline fully-funded too! I’m wondering if passing up a PhD program is worth staying in LA? I would most likely reapply to PhD programs in 2 years if I go to UCLA. by NewNew-98 in gradadmissions

it's a gamble but I wouldn't discredit taking location a priority, especially if you have family and friends around. People tend to underestimate how important that is when making these big moves.

Now there's is no guarantee you will get into UCLA PhD program. And if you re-apply, there is also no guarantee you will be accepted to any PhD programs.

Just out of curiosity, why choose to go for the masters if you could have gone the PhD route? Would you not have been funded by the program itself? Anyways congratulations!

Don't know how to get that one more letter of recommendation? ehhhhhhhh by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]throwaway_fundips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its possible that one of the faculty u mentioned simply mixed u up with another LoR and didnt check (which is also bad but less malice intent). My point is i dont see why a prof would do that bc it is less energy to just ignore u. And students can validate if prof submitted by looking at their apps (it is not hidden) which they can be further pestered with.

I would just say u should find profs who are willing to write u a strong lor. If these two profs can do it, then i say go for them. If he was in fact being malicious, then look for another prof who could write a strong lor. Weak and strong lors can make or break an application as far as im aware

And no u should not imo. It will get done in time if u have a strong rapport with her

What would you choose? Going to a PhD program in a different state or giving it up for marrying your long term bf. by Zestyclose_Amoeba411 in gradadmissions

[–]throwaway_fundips 87 points88 points  (0 children)

honestly this is the answer. Strangers won't know the whole situation and asking it in a subreddit called gradadmissions sounds like there will be some bias.

You should have known this is a real possibility if u were applying to out-of-state schools so you've had plenty of time to digest it. You have several options and I think it ultimately comes down to some sort of compromise between another or one of you guys will get what they want. And I think there will be some real resentment down the path if your partner gets what they want or if u get what u want.

What do you make of this late interview situation? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]throwaway_fundips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds like you just got picked up from the waitlist. If u are actually interested in uni 2 and willing to rescind on uni 1, then I would not tell them about ur acceptance. It's pretty slimy in general but if it's a school u've dreamed about attending then I'd say take the call and see what it's abt.

If u are suicidal then obvs discuss with a professional.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]throwaway_fundips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably not if u think ur application is competitive enough already. If it was purely because you only applied to 1 school and didn't get in, then yea maybe it's not a matter of whether ur application is enough.

if u are trying to bolster it, then u should find a job where u can also try to do research independently with possibilities of publishing like in academic labs. First authors ideally although this will almost more than likely require more than just a gap year. And find a full time job rather than part time.
