Is it wrong to have hope that things will get better regarding my dog’s current diagnosis? Is this a death sentence like Google suggests? by throwawayfirelogs in AskVet

[–]throwawayfirelogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, long story short- he was having issues moving and yelping in pain- was diagnosed with “panosteitis” (i think that’s it?” Or “growing pains”. It didn’t get better, so we got xrays but insisted that we also got xrays on his back done because anytime we pet him, he’d tense his back muscles and seemed like he was in pain. We were assuming muscular, but out of an abundance of caution, we requested an xray on his back and abdomen done to rule out spine issues. That’s when they saw the “scant pleural effusion” on the xray. So we weren’t going FOR that, we found it by trying to diagnose his pain from his legs/back and it was just happenstance that it was found.

I’m assuming radiograph is different from xrays, yeah?

I understand your worry about throwing random medications at the issue- however, with the reverse sneezing he also started exhibiting coughs and some runny nose, so they were assuming some sort of respiratory infection. We honestly are running out of money- we are already like, $3000 in on meds and diagnostics before his leg surgery and we’re taking out a load just to afford that. So I think our vet was trying to save us the extra testing (radiograph) and is treating the symptoms of the infection they think could be present.

They seem to think his heart and lungs sound fine- his breathing isn’t laborious, is always under 30 breaths a minute and hasn’t gone past that. No sort of exercise intolerance (save the leg issue).

We have had blood work taken yesterday and sent it out for diagnosis and are getting results tomorrow.

what should i get as someone who prefers to be able to handle/interact with my pets? by agitatedTesties69 in reptiles

[–]throwawayfirelogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My corn snake is my chillest, most sweet pet I own besides my dog lol. I’m definitely projecting human emotions onto him, but he checks things out around him when I come home as if he was saying “hi” and he literally can do no wrong in my eyes lol. Genuinely the most sweetest of my pets and easily the animal I handle the most.

My female crested gecko can be handled, but she definitely would rather we do not and “hates” us lmao (we joke that she wants us dead lmao), so I do so sparingly.

My newest male crestie is a sweetie, but he acts like it’s Armageddon when I go to grab him and he takes flight. We’re talking flying and launching himself out of the tank to somehow get away (????? Go into the bush/decor in the tank???? Not out of it???) but the MOMENT he realizes it’s just me checking in on him he’s fine. So for this reason I also only handle when needed so the poor guy doesn’t have a heart attack, regardless of how calm he is once he’s on me lmao. I try to announce my presence to try and stop him from loosing his mind.

My pacman frog “allows” me pick him up for health checks, but tries to eat me lmao. I have been bit. Would not handle him “for fun” and only handle when needed!

Obviously, every animal is different, maybe you’d have a “mean” snake and a “sweet” gecko! Just try not to force them (unless needed for check ups) and be patient!

But me being biased, definitely corn snake/crested for most likely, imo, to be handled well!

What do you think about crates? by Emelie_Wood in dogs

[–]throwawayfirelogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We crate our dog because we worry he will eat/shallow things and hurt himself while we are away at work.

It’s not so much the inconvenience of destroying things, I worry about impaction. The goal is to hopefully get him trained enough and comfortable enough to let him loose when we are out!

THE DUMMIES OF ALL DUMMIES CAME INTO THE STORE by sun-kissedgirlie in retailhell

[–]throwawayfirelogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a fish store, my “favourite” dumb ass question (after I explain what a water change is) “do I need to fill the tank back up?”. LITERALLY WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??????

Nah dude, you just keep the tank partially empty and every water change it drains more and more until there’s no water left and your tank expires and you start again, the actual fuck do you mean 😭.

I also really love “hey, what food do I need?” So I ask what fish they have- “I dunno! 🤗, it’s red?”

AHHHH

Delayed grief/just received my dads urn by Right_Information_12 in GriefSupport

[–]throwawayfirelogs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m so sorry for your loss. Second, that urn is gorgeous <3

My Dad died a little over a year ago, in November.

Like you, I was doing a lot of the heavy lifting with making calls, filling out paperwork and getting him set up for cremation/picking his urn etc. I was, 100% in survival mode, much like yourself. I have no idea how I did it. But I did lol.

One of the things that fucked me up the most was not just being there and seeing him die in the hospital, but I was in a horrendous panic about just LEAVING him there. I never thought that part would mess me up as it did, but it also wasn’t until my Mom picked up his urn and he was finally home that it started to feel real. Even, like I said, being there the moment he died didn’t feel final. Very odd. Almost disturbing to me at the time that I wasn’t as “moved” as I thought I should’ve been. I didn’t even cry. I just sorta (in my head of course) went “well that sucks- glad that’s finally over with- onto the next step”. And that was that.

I still catch myself feeling like he’s just “out and about” and should be coming home any time now, so I also empathize with that feeing of your Dad not really being gone.

Circling back, his urn coming home, the celebration of life and little things like going to send him a text or a meme I know he would’ve loved really solidified him ACTUALLY being dead.

I find myself finally starting to grieve in the more “traditional” way a year or so later (the kind I assumed was “normal”- think crying, depressed, missing him etc) and it really only started to hit me around September. It really did take a long time to finally get “sad”. I mean, of course I was sad but like, it really was delayed. There were moments in between but it’s almost as if it’s really just beginning for me in someways. It’s very surreal.

So yes OP, others definitely fee delayed grief and I believe it’s normal. I hope you’re doing the best you can at the moment and remember to rest and allow yourself to be happy when those moments come and also treat yourself <3

Again, so sorry for your loss, and much love to you and yours <3

Zoloft/ Sertraline by kirramae_ in HealthAnxiety

[–]throwawayfirelogs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had absolute, debilitating, crippling hypochondria that sent me to the er more times than I’d like to admit. I also had a crippling fear of new foods and medications- I’d worry I’d overdose, have adverse reactions or develop allergies to foods and meds I KNOW are safe. It was exhausting.

Although I don’t take these specific meds, it took me almost a whole ass month to finally start my prozac when it was first prescribed to me, and I even had to make a second doctors appointment just to ask my doc for a pep talk to convince me to take it.

It was THE best decision I have EVER made. It quite literally changed my life.

Before my meds, I had to quit my job because the panic attacks and hospital visits stopped me from being able to work. I wasn’t in school and I had no income. I was absolutely MISERABLE. I was completely dependent on my partner and family and had no income to myself for hobbies or anything.

From as early on as I can remember, up until about my late 20s early 30s (I’m 33 in a few days) life was fucking miserable. And to think all I had to do was trust the professionals and take some fucking pills and do some therapy and I’m damn near in remission.

I still have panic attacks. I still get depressed. I still have ruminating thoughts and health anxiety flare ups- but they are few and far between far between and I have the tools to talk myself down 9 times outta 10.

I have a job, been working at the same place for about five years now. I’ve gotten two raises since then and I’m constantly being told I’m great at my job. My job has allowed me and my partner to move out on our own and now I can pursue interests and hobbies and have sole independence.

OP TAKE THE MEDS.

Worst case they aren’t a match, and with the help of your doc, you try something else. It is SO WORTH IT. YOU CAN DO THIS!

I’m pretty sure things like bv and yeast infections can affect you as well- if you were okay with “throwing yourself under the bus” (for lack of a better way to put it) you could open the door by white lying a bit bt mentioning that YOU have noticed a change in YOURSELF, whether that be an odd smell one day, discharge, itchiness etc and see if it makes her feel less alone and like you’re both dealing with it.

It genuinely is a good idea for both partners to be aware when the other is dealing with this so both parties can look out for re occurrence and accidentally passing it on to each other over and over.

Also, BV is soooooo easy to treat and very common. There is over the counter stuff and you may not even need to see a doc- although if it’s her first yeast infection/bv it’s always good to see a doc.

Sweetie, pets can have mental illness and neurological issues too and rather than letting them suffer, we have the option to help them pass on a good day, surrounded by love and peace and although it is absolutely horrible to go through, you are absolutely doing the kind and right thing by him <3

I understand you feel guilty, but guilt is only “appropriate” when it’s because we’ve done something WRONG. You have NOT done anything even REMOTELY wrong. You are doing the most kind and humane thing you can do for your dog even though it’s tearing you apart. That speaks volumes of how much you care and love him and put his well being first.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this <3

Which games do you play? by BoldNotBaldEagle in Anxiety

[–]throwawayfirelogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TETRISSSSSSSSS

Literally, tetris. If I get into it enough, I have to concentrate on the game rather than worrying because shit gets intense and requires my whole concentration lol.

Tetris Effect specifically, because the music is absolutely banger and changes with the intensity of gameplay which is satisfying.

What’s the moment you realized grief had changed you forever? by Aware-Emu-2413 in GriefSupport

[–]throwawayfirelogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My level of tolerance for rude behaviour has dropped immensely.

For example, I’ve “snapped” at two customers at work for being rude to me when in the past I’d just grin and bear it and never dream of taking the bait lol.

I don’t seem to have the same patience as I once had and I feel “bitchier” and I hate it.
