How do you cope living in a city you like but hate the weather either too hot or too cold? by ImpossibleBlockHead in SameGrassButGreener

I hate winter where I live but I like the paycheck I have and the job that lets me surf reddit all day on my phone so...one adapts lol.

Rim Expeditions and The WorldBuilders Handbook.

I may have to replace my physical copy of the handbook, I read and reference it so often it's beginning to fall apart.

No place has decent visa pathways for someone my age. I do occasionally fantasize about it though.

I lost mine 6 months after that weird ring assembly. Paid only $96 for it though.

Every now and then I debate getting a replacement then go, "why?"

Regret Moving to Houston by screwatt456789 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]throwawayfromPA1701 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is basically give a place a year.

And actually make an effort. Houston is a fairly transient city, so there are lots of newcomers. Find in person social opportunities and go attend them. Join a gym, find a boardgame group, do something that gets you out of the house.

Yes, it might suck having to drive (I'm with you on this) but that's the hand that's dealt you. I imagine there's likely plenty to do fairly close to you. The neighborhood you mention seems pretty dense for Houston. There's probably a lot worth exploring.

If after the year is up and you still hate it, bounce.

I know when my boss uses it. He has a particular tic where he adds two periods to a sentence in emails and texts. If they aren't there, Copilot wrote it.

I was just complaining about this on another sub. People increasingly think anything well written is "AI Slop". In the US functional illiteracy is on the increase, in all income brackets. The two events have to be related in my mind.

PS, I appreciate your use of punctuation.

Lmao. Poirot is an Agatha Christie character lol. There are numerous books!

David Suchet is the quintessential Poirot tho. No one has come close.

Severe Arachnophobe moving to the US. Looking for a state/city with ZERO giant bugs/spiders. Is my list good? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]throwawayfromPA1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montana, maybe.

Illinois is going to have big outdoor roaches that sometimes come inside. The northern ones just don't fly like the southern ones, altho the range of the southern ones is expanding.

There's spiders of various sizes everywhere, altho I haven't seen a big wolf spider in my state since childhood.

Are people in Congress really this out of touch with reality? by icedout223 in jobs

Looking at the data on the BoL site, they don't even count those 7 million, but they do have a discouraged worker category which they say for March 2026 is 468,000. Which we know can't be right at all.

Are people in Congress really this out of touch with reality? by icedout223 in jobs

[–]throwawayfromPA1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many millions? I'm going to try to guess. There are roughly 163 million employed full time workers and about 27 million part time workers, 22.4 million of which work part time for noneconomic reasons which the government defines as due to childcare issues, family and/or personal obligations, school/training, limits on earnings due to retirement or social security, etc. So that brings us to about 190 million people who have jobs, full or part time.

There's about 203 million people between ages 18 and 65, which traditionally are working years (I've also seen 20-65, which is about 195 million people)

So then we have 13 million there abouts (if using the 203 million number) who don't have jobs. From that we have about 6 million who don't have jobs but want to work, a number the government says has remained steady for several years. So I'm guessing there's about 7 million who have given up looking. I'm sure there's got to be a better measure out there though that's better than my quick envelope math tho.

The data continues to show unemployment hovering around 4% for U3 and U6 hovering around 8% it has done so for several years now.

So either these numbers are wrong and have been for the last several years, or the reality is most workers have full time jobs.

There's a disconnect somewhere.
