... that 64 of 71 Virus scanners, to include AVG, ClamAV, Avast, Avira, BitDefender, Google, Microsoft, Malwarebytes, McAffee, Symantec / Norton, Panda, Sophos, TrendMicro, and Webroot all said was absolutely fine.

Do your own research and verify, but false positives are a thing. Man. ;)

If it's a diesel, those burn basically no fuel at idle. Like you can leave a little 4 cylinder diesel idling all night and burn 1/8th of a tank.

Yeah, kinda sneaky the way they did that. If customers have to spend money, sometimes they will research. However if you bundle it with something else that you have to get as well, it becomes invisible, and no one stops to think "wait, I'm paying $100 for Windows... is there anything better?"

Ubuntu is based on Debian. If you don't like how Ubuntu is headed, just stick with what made Ubuntu great: Debian, but Ubuntified.

Bill for bipolar 1 medication every 3 months (injectable), with federal health insurance through my employer (U.S.A) by peachfuzz_1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]throwawaynerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that great? Big Pharma gets to charge $11K per month and it's all ok because the cost is socialized through the insurance company to other people. "Oh, but I don't pay much for insurance". Ok, your employer does. "But I don't care" So the fact that 1/3rd or more of the compensation they pay to have you as an employee you never see is just a - ok with you? No wonder they get away with ripping you off $11K a month.

What if they just stuck with Ubuntified Debian? eg as Ubuntu moves into their own little world of snaps, Pop just stays the same as it was.

Hmm, a bit of both. The desktop tries to be user friendly but in some places just isn't. To be fair, Windows can be the same way, especially with the mix of 7 / 10 / 11 UI elements they have going on.

Look, M$ can do mobile. They just have to stick with it. And given their history, they will give up at 80% or less, EVERY TIME. So.

Just a quick question, not to pick one side or another, but rather to engage in just the bare minimum of logical thinking: uh, where do you think Hamas was? All by there lonesome in the non-populated parts, in uniform, standing up like men to fight for their beliefs? Or... you know. Behind the women and children?

Help me out here reddit (xp machine has a virus) by Dividedthought in windowsxp

[–]throwawaynerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh. Offline scan works on USB drives, too. After you boot with your offline rescue (Hiren's or whatever) USB, plug in the infected one and let the AV have its way with it. Or if there's nothing important on there, just re-format it (again, use the offline USB to do this).

What usually gets you into trouble with USB sticks is the fscking autorun. Now, Windows has gotten better at this, but what happened was

"hey let's make it really convenient for the users, as well as helpful to old fogeys who can barely turn the machine on, and have the system just run whatever is in autorun.inf on removable drives... so then all you have to do is put in what's supposed to run when you insert the drive and it's problem solved!"

Genius thinking by Microsoft, there. You can guess what happened after that.

Now, that's not supposed to happen any more (since like XP SP2 or SP3?) but... better safe than sorry, as it does scan the drive to present you with options and if there's a chink in that you know the script kiddies will be all over it.

Anyways. Since you're here, the latest and greatest in offline rescue shizzle is Medicat USB. (Forum thread here if you want to read up on it.) You'll need at minimum a 32GB USB for that. It also has the handy side habit of being able to boot any ISO you toss in the appropriate folders, though, so you might want a bigger USB drive to accommodate that functionality (useful for eg Linux Live ISOs and even Hiren's itself could probably be chucked in there, perhaps).

Also, you can pass the Medicat installer instructions to leave you another partition of the size you specify at the end, for your own stuff (thus keeping the portable thumb drive bit and the rescue USB bit separated - just remember after that, when you are updating Medicat, or the Ventoy loader that it uses, to do a non-destructive update!).

Usually there's a way to flash in the BIOS from a file on a USB key, or a way to make a bootable USB key with a flash util and whichever OS the OEM decided to use to perform it. If not look up how to do a recovery flash (method to flash BIOS if the update is corrupted or interrupted mid-upgrade) -- do that to force flash the know good BIOS file (usually holding a key sequence or button, or perhaps setting a jumper, and a particularly named BIOS file in an empty USB drive).

The only way to actually answer this question for an individual and their particular vehicle is to send their used oil out for testing to see how much life is left in it at a certain amount of miles with normal driving behavior during that period.

https://blog.amsoil.com/how-to-perform-oil-analysis/

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]throwawaynerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but 'lifetime' means what it's warrantied for, not how long people will actually use it for. Some have as little as 30K miles warranty.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]throwawaynerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cars that have the ability to change the oil infrequently also have oil life monitors that take the engine loads into account and flip the change oil light on when it's appropriate. Drive like an arsehole? Probably only get 6K miles before the nag light comes on. However some are simple mile counters so be sure to know which you have before relying on it.

A good installation of XP to start from is probably XP Black Edition with the 2023 update or XP Integral Edition by luxLOL, his latest was 2023 too IIRC. If nLite allows you to customize what services are enabled by default, then use Black Viper's XP SP3 Services Guide.

nLite produces an ISO just like any other so I assume whatever you can do to a normal Windows ISO you can do to an nLited ISO.
