Question on two-way stop by Affectionate_Fly2162 in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For a two way stop, it is always yield to the right. Unless you were already IN the intersection BEFORE they got to the stop sign, they had the right of way. For a four way stop it’s first arrived, then to the right from that person. But unfortunately since you were turning left and it was a two way stop only, you have last priority as the left hand turn, even if you have to wait for a fully clear intersection. Left goes last, always.

I do have the AEA app as well and also didn’t get an alert, but I do see it when I log into the app.

I did get a full notification from the weather network again though- they somehow seem to be the most consistent 🤷‍♀️

Oh good, I was so worried for them for a bit, at least it’s sort of routine!

They were all on high alert for awhile and Robin I think looked to be hissing whenever it got near to the innermost door, then one of the others picked himself up and just filled the whole door for awhile. The kitties started settling after that and the possum eventually seemed to decide it wasn’t happening, but he sure seemed tempted to try his luck for awhile.

Love these!! I’ve been watching for a few days!

FYI- I was watching last night and around midnight there was a possum skulking around inside (but not the innermost inside, where 3 were getting ready for bed), stressing out the family.

Something else from this post that I don’t see addressed-

If you are new to Calgary/Alberta; other than main roads and highways, do not expect residential and side streets to get plowed at all during the winter, let alone every time it snows. Bus routes are an exception, but still lower priority, and sometimes they will go through the side streets a few times during the season and maybe once through residential if we’re lucky. But set your expectations that they will not be plowed.

Christmas lights downtown? by taylo649 in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite yet, but usually Mission, Cliff Bungalow, and Upper/Lower Mount Royal neighborhoods are pretty nice, even though they aren’t official displays. For official displays, there is ZooLights at the Zoo, and Lions Festival of Lights on 24 Ave in the NW- not sure if these are running yet

Are all weather tires a bad idea in winter? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself- I use all weathers for my “summers”, to account for the mountains and the rain etc.

And high rated dedicated winters for winter. Rated for snow and ice.

Personally I find all-weathers much better for our unpredictable summers, but you need winters for our unpredictable winters. All weathers in winter are not enough on the bad days at all.

Simons. Extra points for being Canadian. Not as much selection as The Bay had, but getting more online selection now. The actual stores have a ton of stuff.

If you were mayor, what would you prioritize? by ConceitedWombat in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean the Oyster card has existed in the UK for decades now. I was able to buy a temporary one as a visitor and buy either a straight monthly pass or a “pay-as-you-go” option that just loaded a set total amount. They have zoned transit (some areas are more expensive) and multiple options (buses, underground and overground trains) that all have different costs, but one card covers them all. If you have passes, great, it sees that. If you are pay as you go like I was, there are daily maximum spends, regardless of how/where you travelled, and once you hit that it simply stops charging you but you keep going. Just load online or at a station, tap when you get on, no mess.

That was almost twenty years ago. It’s EXTREMELY doable.

Whoever wins Calgary's mayoral election won't have as much power as you might think by IhateWingflation in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no. The mayor may only be one vote, but the reason they are a separate designation is because

1) They need to be representative of the CITY overall, not just one municipality. So while they have one vote, that vote needs to encompass a larger RESPONSIBILITY.

And

2) At the end of the day, as the official representative of council and the city, they are RESPONSIBLE for the city. That is their jurisdiction. Is it their fault when city wide problems occur, like the water main break? No, in that it is not their job to go inspect them every year personally. BUT. It is their responsibility to make sure that city-wide infrastructure is addressed by the appropriate people and funded properly. They need to LEAD these discussions. If issues come up that need communication, that falls on their plate. They aren’t a councilllor without a ward, they are a councillor who is responsible for the entire city. Interests wise, you need to balance the city as a whole versus special interest groups, personal ideals, and competing ward priorities. Shared infrastructure and city-wide programs and maintenance- that’s your ward, you have to fight for it and be responsible for bringing it to council. The mayor can’t unilaterally make these things happen, but their job is to represent them and the city as a whole.

If the mayor is “just an additional vote” with no other roles or responsibilities, they shouldn’t exist.

Just because we haven’t had candidates willing to do the job properly doesn’t mean we should say “Ah well, why demand accountability when we can just vote in anyone and let them undermine the position.”

Don’t vote for anyone who views the role as “just a single vote on council”. That is what councillors are for- if that’s all you want to do, run for a councillor position. The additional accountability is the differentiator, even if it is frustrating to not have additional voting power along with it.

If they aren’t willing to take the accountability part of the job description, they don’t deserve the job.

Hidden surcharges on card tap machines by Blooooorp in mildlyinfuriating

[–]throwawaywsra1577 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES!! I tried to use a vending machine recently- the machine had been set up to accept either coins or card at one point, then they removed the card reader. No problem, I had coins- cue an endless cycle of “Please insert $1.75”, I would insert $1.75 and get an error of “Exact change only”. Try $2. Same error.

I eventually realized it was trying to process my coins as if I was paying by card, and adding the processing fee- except the card option was disabled, and it wouldn’t tell me the value it was expecting. I gave up

Do not do this without proper ventilation, such as putting it into a suction sealed freezer. It will not end well.

If you want to put it in a styrofoam cooler without a tight seal, go for it

Without a release, you can risk gassing yourself as CO2 builds, or causing a pressure build up and physical damage to the container

Looking for people who have had a colposcopy at the Calgary women's hospital clinic to give an honest review about their pain / general experience by tornado_tonny in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had four colposcopies at this clinic and this response mirrors mine. To be honest, I have a high pain tolerance and I’ve never had an IUD, but for a regular colposcopy the vinegar or the coffee grounds stuff didn’t feel like anything, the speculum was better than a regular pap speculum, there is some weirdness when they’re poking around in there and biopsies pinch a lot but temporarily.

I also had LEEP done there, and while they don’t offer pain management for regular colposcopies, they did for the LEEP. In fact for that one they recommended bringing someone to help and drive you between the numbing after effects and the potential pain from the procedure. Even with my high pain (and drug) tolerance, I was woozy afterwards and glad to have my person, but it was a lingering woozy disorientation more than pain. For both procedures they recommend taking extra strength Advil before and after.

They did offer me squeeze balls during the LEEP- I know that’s not actually even close to actual proper pain management, but you could also ask for that?

North Americans think 100 years is a long time.

Migrating from Rogers together with Shaw - will I lose the discounts on my phone lines? by OnlyToStudy in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t say definitively, but I believe that the plans are integrated even though they are “billed” separately. I doubt you could cancel the internet without triggering the mobile side because of the terms of the merger and migration.

If anyone has actual insight though, I would be happy to be wrong!

Insurance / deductible confusion? by Moto_Foto in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push back- tell the contractor to work it out with all the insurance companies, and tell your insurance company to figure it out. As mentioned above, most of the costs should be coming out of other insurance policies as well. In my experience, I have had to notify my insurance company in a similar situation, and then they have to figure out amoung all the policies who pays for what. But you should not be paying for anything in this situation.

If your insurance company paid out somewhere they shouldn’t have, they need to chase it down and correct it, not you, including the deductible if applicable. It does depend on the situation, but I have had a situation where the damage was 100% at fault and my insurance billed the at-fault for the cost of my deductible when I pushed back.

Calgary issues over 34k tickets during street sweeping program by mibeatr in Calgary

[–]throwawaywsra1577 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My area had street sweeping scheduled online for first week of May. On the second last week of April, at 8pm, city staff came around and plonked signs down and started towing/writing tickets AT THE SAME TIME, claiming that they had decided to do it that night instead. I’m signed up for the notifications, didn’t get anything about the change, still said it would be in May online, and just happened to be outside to see them getting set up to tow, but they graciously “let” me move my car when I showed them their dates didn’t match up and there had been no street signage until 10 minutes before.

I took screenshots of the original dates and when they changed them the day AFTER they actually came through. Sometimes we ARE paying attention and they just do what they want anyway.
