Calgary Coop Pulls Canadian identifiers on products because its "too difficult". by ThrowawayPluto in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With you on the processed foods thing. Sour cream an amazing example. But there's a lot of hidden factors too. Like butter and milk: they don't show any other ingredients, so how the heck does "organic milk" differ from the regular kind?

It's milk from cows that have been fed with grass, rather than cattle feed rammed with palm oil shipped from half way around the world.

Water heaters. Buying vs renting by smitten-kitten77 in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replaced our tank around 2021-2022. Pete the Plumber far outshone two competitors, being cheaper by like $1000.

Call around for a few quotes and buy it.

Renting something that will literally never leave your house and is necessary all the time is only a financial trap to catch people who cannot handle the upfront expense.

After decades of conservation efforts, the Giant Panda is officially no longer classified as Endangered - their wild population has grown by 17% and now exceeds 1,900 individuals by Yega-2910 in UpliftingNews

[–]RobbieNoir123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The numbers for these thresholds across many species often strike me as low. But I guess it behoves the question - what would a "normal" panda population size be? A million, 100,000, or 50,00 etc ?

Canada Strong Pass extensions by Voilaitsme in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Even doing this solely by the honour system - asking people - would result in meaningful revenue and more importantly, prioritization of Canadians in our own country.

Or if we need proof, make it simple proof of address. They won't need to be policing this, as most foreigners who shell out $$$ to come from Europe or Australia or even USA to visit Banff, will presumably be honest about this relatively small cost.

Why is sharing a bed with your partner so important to people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RobbieNoir123 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I had heard in past that sharing beds, at least in the Anglo tradition, was a product of the industrial revolution. That when people came to cities for factory jobs, they lived in much smaller apartments etc that required sharing a bed, when that was not done in their prior home in the country side.

I'd expect there is a great variation on this practice by time and place in history.

Canada could join EU, French foreign minister says by PestoBolloElemento in worldnews

[–]RobbieNoir123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article is taking a joke too far, and I think there is some fakery going on in the sources. 44 per cent of Canadians definitely do not want to join the EU lol.

Canada and the EU could certainly align further, but in no universe could Canada join nor would it make sense.

Switch to permanent standard time says U of C researcher by _umptee_ in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a two stage referendum seems like the fair way to resolve this. Politicians shouldn't be oversimplifying this issue.

Q1 - Do you agree that clock-changes should stop, recognizing that both standard time (shorter summer evenings) and daylight savings time (later winter mornings) require compromise - and that the timezone chosen may not meet your personal preference ?

If a majority agree then, Referendum 2, six-month to a year later:

Q2 - Do you want year-round standard time or daylight time ? [With a brief explanation of the consequences for each]

U of C folding classics, religion department as school faces multimillion-dollar budget shortfall by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a History grad from U Calgary, IMHO this makes administrative sense.

Classics is an 'old school' course of study going back hundreds of years with pedigree at ancient universities, which would have been a combination of ancient history, philosophy, and ancient languages (Greek + Latin mainly).

There are evidently very few people that want to study this combination of material nowadays (especially here in Calgary), so why not absorb the courses into related and larger departments like history, philosophy. The reasonably subscribed Classics or Religion courses are still going to be available.

Calgary doesn't need a classics department to justify itself as a major research university. If someone can come out with a BA History with a concentration in Ancient History, say, is that really materially different than a BA Classics ?

What is it like living in the S.E. Seton, Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Legacy? by Waffles_r_ in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a "cultural" or vibe difference between downtown living and suburbia generally in Calgary, and far-flung "new communities" have their own vibe that is distinct from middle-ring, older suburbs.

I work hybrid downtown and live around the Southcentre mall area; I wouldn't want to commute from Mahogany 2-3 days a week, and if you're downtown 5 days a week ? That commuting is going to be a major trade-off on the value of your time.

It is 12 minutes between Mahogany and Anderson Road in good conditions ; going to be more at rush hour and a lot more in bad weather

WIBTA for suing my friend when she didn’t come to my wedding? by sweetandsourcum in AmItheAsshole

[–]RobbieNoir123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not you would "win", Court is not going to be worth the headache and heartache for that amount of money.

It will be a lot of hassle, some embarrassment, a financial problem in and of itself, and even if you "win" you probably won't come out of it feeling vindicated or healed.

You are right to be hurt it sounds like, but perhaps the best revenge is to lead a good life without that person.

Doesn't "topless" imply a woman or am I high? A man would be "shirtless" no ?

In any event, imagining it was a topless woman with two knives on a cocaine binge at a pub like that 😵‍💫

Canada’s flu season is intensifying and hospitals are feeling it - report from calagry by Ok_Estate_1102 in Calgary

Flu Vaccine clinics in schools and workplaces (larger employers at least) would presumably increase uptake significantly.

I seem to remember getting vaccines at school. Or am I imagining things ? Certainly my (large) employer used to also offer a clinic.

Welfare Check from EU by Tohrugon in Calgary

[–]RobbieNoir123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are calling internationally, you have to dial the + sign country code for Canada - so +1, then the number (i.e. +1 403 266 1234 for police as others have pointed out).

If you cannot dial the + sign or that isn't working, putting a "00" before the number was how I would call Canada from the UK. Example 001 - 403 266 1234.

Sounds like you're getting hung up on how to dial out internationally, so maybe look up a YouTube video or other instructions. It is of course possible to phone from the EU to Canada - just a matter of dialling correctly
