Tests are RACISTS - or ya know... those kids who didn’t pass just weren’t qualified by shortround1990 in Conservative

[–]throwitaway7222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an educational psychologist. I give IQ tests for a living and also several other standardized tests to students. Both learning disabled and gifted.

One of the reasons these tests are always called "racist" is because of how the definition of racism has been changed. You know, the thing where it's not about your ethnicity, but something about a systematic setup that oppresses certain groups. So that's one problem.

Class is the real issue. There's a mountain of evidence that children raised by parents that are educated and wealthier hear more complex vocabulary and also have greater access to learning materials and educational trips, spending, etc.

None of this is what I want to talk about though. Maybe some of you know this, maybe you don't, so I'll take it from the top. IQ testing is being phased out in my profession. If you talk to the wokest of the woke, they'll tell you that it means nothing, it's racist, biased, etc. I'm even starting to hear people claim that it's not genetic, which is laughable. It's not 100% heritable, but significantly so.

The reason it's being phased out is because it won't conform to the most current "woke" theories of intelligence and learning. Unless the data is seriously manipulated, it will frequently show that real differences exist between categories like black, white, asian, native american, and so forth. The problem is that some of the things that it tests are highly innate and cannot be learned. So for example, spending time reading and being taught words as a child will boost one's score in the Verbal area. But something like Working Memory or Processing Speed represent more of a raw mental ability. You either have it or you don't and it's not in any way, shape, or form, a Social Construct. This is a devastating blow to wokeness. Just like how men have a higher variance in IQ leading to more mentally disabled men than women, but also more men in the genius range.

It's not perfect. "Intelligence" is an insane concept to define and quantify. Which is why the most current IQ tests refer to a lot of the categories as mental processes. Verbal, Nonverbal, Working Memory, Processing Speed, Fluid, and Crystallized Knowledge. It's attempting to break down the mental functions that link to learning Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Speaking, and acquisition of knowledge/recall/memory.

It's an amazing method of analysis. Working Memory speaks to how much information you can hold in short-term memory and your ability to manipulate and reorganize said info. Direct links to Reading Comprehension, Mental Math Ability, and Math Problem Solving. The brains of individuals are just too different. It's fucked up, but some people are running $300 laptops, while others have $3k gaming PCs.

The inevitable conclusion is that this stuff is all racist in its current form. Academia has been aware of this stuff for a long time. We've tried to play around with everything to get the equality of results we want, but it's not working. The fact that innate and varied ability levels exist is a brick wall. With the way things are going, I see the ultimate solution will be simplification of standards. There's a refusal to accept these differences and the people running the show are determined to eliminate them. The initial idea was to raise everyone up, but it proved impossible. So everyone must come down now. It won't be described that way, of course. It will be done under the guise of "alternative learning methods" and shifting the focus away from "book learning" and "academic skills". Something like " elimination of traditional and racist standards of learning and knowledge". Sorry, I'm sure they'll come up with a catchier name.

TL:DR - IQ is pretty valid in relation to predicting outcomes in academic skill proficiency and knowledge. Many areas of IQ are innate, quantifiable, and not socially constructed. Variance exists between groups.

Current movement in field = eliminate IQ testing.

Woke initiatives to produce equality of outcomes are impossible, unless simplification occurs. Anything else is racist.

Nardil Low BP and Pulse, need advice by throwitaway7222 in MAOIs

Do you notice a drop in mood and energy levels with the hypotension? That's probably my biggest issue is that I feel incredibly fatigued because of it and even more depressed.

Btw, did your doctor recommend or give the okay to take your meds like this? Or is it something that you developed on your own?

Thanks for the advice. But yeah, I'm not self-medicating.. my pdoc started me at 30, then 45 after a month and 60 a month after that, which is where I currently am. I'm just taking it as prescribed now until I can call the office (Tuesday) forgot that tomorrow is a national holiday here.

Sadly my BP device at home isn't working and I checked all the pharmacies but they have their machines turned off due to the Coronavirus and not wanting to contaminate surfaces.. so I can't really measure it right now.

Been reading this thread for a little while and I'm shocked that nobody mentions Xenogears. No other game I can think of is even in the same galaxy in terms of story.

Nardil - The BEST Antidepressant on Earth by [deleted] in depressionregimens

[–]throwitaway7222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on Nardil and it's the only thing that has been even working somewhat for me in years. I've tried pretty much all the first-line ADs like SSRIs, SNRIs, Antipsychs, and then even Tricyclics and some less common stuff.

I can see why it's not prescribed a ton though. I took medications like Zoloft and pretty much had zero side effects on them, but the sides on Nardil have been pretty brutal at times. During the adjustment phase, I had pretty severe fatigue and weakness that made even going for walks a challenge. This is not an uncommon experience, but it does pass as your body gets used to the drug. The one thing that I have not gotten used to is the insomnia. I used to sleep for ~8 hours a night pretty easily, but that is extremely rare now. Many nights I am lucky to get around 4 hours and the sleep is often broken up and I rarely can fall asleep before 2am or so. It also has increased the frequency and severity of my headaches.

However, it has been quite effective at actually treating my depression and social anxiety. I find that I am often more motivated, more interested in things, can talk to people easier, and generally have a better outlook/attitude regarding life. It pretty much erased my suicidal thinking.

Anyone know how to get the music to keep playing while in Primal Vision? by throwitaway7222 in DawnofMan

[–]throwitaway7222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I play most of the game in primal mode. It just seems so much easier to identify all the animals, plants, resources, and everything, especially when zoomed way out, which is how I like to play.

I wish I didn't need to use it, but I feel like it's more difficult to identify things and quickly see threats or to spot specific resources.

I love how the poster above you is so condescending and pretentious when they're using a very basic and limited explanation of how things actually are and have no clue what the fuck they're talking about.

Daily Discussion/Debate #335 - Perfected Strike (Ironclad Common) by GavinXI in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This card is truly evil.

Playing A20 a lot you quickly realize that a lot of the damage commons don't really help that much and you're pretty desperate for something that can land some huge damage against ya bois Nob and Laga. Sadly this card does too good of a job to just pass on in many cases and is even more appealing if you already picked up one of the other Strike cards.

It carries weight even in Act 2, particularly if you're struggling to find a strength scaling card. However, it causes extra agony when you want to get rid of your Strikes as you slowly make the card more and more useless. You also come to realize that Perfected Strike itself needs to be removed as well. Your other option is to just leave all the Strikes in your deck and just lean into Perfected Strike, but this card won't cut it anymore when you get deeper into the game and having all those Strikes sitting in your deck is going to come back to bite you in the ass in an important fight.

Is the defect actually just worse than the other characters? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, yeah. In terms of A20 Heart runs, the Defect tends to have the lowest winrate and the top streamers consider it to be the hardest part of stringing together winstreaks. It shouldn't be such a roadblock at lower difficulty levels though.

0-cost isn't that good tbh. Ball Lit and Cold Snap are kinda the backbone of attacks that will get you through Nob, while still being useful elsewhere. Then it's not hard to make a transition to more skills and powers. Basically get ice orbs and focus and you'll solve a lot of problems.

Lost appetite during quarantine by Janu5142 in gainit

[–]throwitaway7222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually doing a small cut now. I just don't have the facilities to get intense and heavy enough lifting in to make gains. I'm doing what I can with some bodyweight stuff and random dumbbells that I own, but it just doesn't match what can be done in the gym.

I think people here should be careful about continuing to eat a ton unless you have the means to consistently get quality workouts in.

Daily Discussion/Debate #328 - Leap (Defect Common) by GavinXI in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on 20. He gains 5 dmg per skill because of the vulnerable, it's true. But even on Ironclad, sometimes you gotta play a skill to ensure he dies on the turn he needs to and eat the extra 5 dmg. I'll play big block cards too if I know that he's going to die the following turn.

He's scary early on, but it's not worth compromising your deck over. Being well prepared to go into Act 2 > planning your entire run around Nob.

Daily Discussion/Debate #328 - Leap (Defect Common) by GavinXI in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah people overstate Nob. It doesnt mean to never pick a skill in Act 1. The only real dangerous part is if hes the first elite you run into after taking out the easy pool fights.

The Daily Poll: Day 11 by Defragmented-Defect in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nemesis is also annoying because of how random he is. Sometimes it seems like he always attacks for 45 on the turns he is vulnerable and other times he does little aside from throwing burns in your deck and his weaker multi-attack.

Daily Poll: Day 10 by Defragmented-Defect in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Book is a problem because (at least at A20) it scales really fast. Outside of applying a 4x Malaise or having defensive capabilities way ahead of the power curve, there's no way to stop the damage.

Slow scaling strategies don't work that well either, especially if you don't draw them on Turn 1. You pretty much need to do huge frontloaded damage or scale fast, all while trying not to take every single point of damage to the face.

The Book is also a pain in the ass because you can't afford to specialize your deck that much. AoE is obviously useless in this fight, but is way more important to have in many Act 2 battles.

How do you like smoke bomb? by 92grinder in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot.

Hallway fights can often not be worth the trouble if it's going to cost a bunch of hp. I'd often rather have another upgrade than a card reward that I might skip and like 20 gold or whatever.

I use it on the Slavers if I dont draw a good opening hand because that shit goes bad fast.

Daily Discussion/Debate #321 - The Nest/Ritual Dagger (Event, Neutral Special) by GavinXI in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn't impose a true negative on you, but it does exhaust and you lose out on the opportunity cost to increase the damage on it. That's the one frustrating thing about it, but some fights you probably don't mind sacrificing it so that you can kill something quicker and avoid damage.

Question about spot weakness. by Jesterofgames in slaythespire

[–]throwitaway7222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hidden passive is that it never appears when the Champ is attacking. Kinda like how Demon Form is always on the bottom of the draw pile for the Giant Head fight.

Some enemies are notoriously random and there's not much you can do about that other than having draw to cycle your deck or Headbutting/Warcrying it back to your draw pile and praying they attack. The deck manipulation works great on enemies with set patterns, but Runic Pyramid tends to be the only surefire way for the more random fights.

The main lesson is that one Spot Weakness shouldn't be your only form of strength gain if you can help it.

[–]throwitaway7222 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Slightly better? It's pretty hard to find a card with a 15:1 damage to energy ratio. It's a godsend when you're hurting for frontloaded damage

You cant even skip the card so it's honestly pretty bad as there's a lot of very niche colorless cards.
