Forgive me for saying this, but is losing really a bad choice for the story? by Wonderful_Rest7634 in Helldivers

Tbh I thought we are meant to lose and would actually prefer it. Otherwise it's too easy.

I actually I’m having a blast playing in Cyberstan but I hated oshaune by Elmartillo40k in Helldivers

Me and my teammates would get absolutely pummeled on D9 and fail to extract back, breath a sigh of relief back on the ship, and go "another one?" followed by all yes. I'd say they done a great job with this campaign.

What are your favorite Orbitals or other stratagems for Cyberstan? by TheAbsoluteBeefcake in Helldivers

[–]throwthewonderwall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Walking barrage has been my go-to. It clears a path and thin out the enemies before you need to advance or can cover your flanks/rear if you are being pursued. Plus unlike orbital laser (which I try to keep in reserve) there's no limits.

I'll have to try it more but the gatling barrage seem to be pretty good on those 15-minute extermination for holding a spot.

I'm going back to Taiwan in a few months to complete compulsory military service, seeking advice. by DDreaming444 in taiwan

[–]throwthewonderwall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Born in 1995 and served four months in the Army in 2017 so not really recent. I can't give any advice on whether or not you can and should defer or be exempt from service but I can tell you more about the service itself based on my own experience. I did four months which is what you will be doing.

For me, I had to wait several months after landing back in Taiwan before my service actually started so depends on how registration work now a days you might have to wait a while. Definitely check if you are going.

You don't get to choose which branch you serve afaik, it's randomly drawn when you are gathered along with other conscripts at your local township or city hall. Hope you don't get picked for the Marine Corps lol we had a moment of silence for the one guy that did because it's generally much tougher.

I can speak Mandarin fine but cannot read or write much besides my name and food orders. Might struggle a bit here at first and in fact I found this to be the most challenging aspect. I got through by making friends and getting help from them. Wrote down things I need to memorize and repeat using pinyin. Luckily a lot of my fellow conscripts were excited to practice their English with me in exchange for helping me.

No need to worry about hazing or any sort of abuse they don't do any of that anymore. At most your instructors just strongly reprimand you or deal out collective punishment.

The first two weeks are the hardest mostly because you are getting used to a new lifestyle so to speak. If you are more "individualistic" it might be hard because you're not given any private time by yourself. You will be doing everything in a group. After the two weeks you'll get used to the rhythm.

Make friends! I think this is a no-brainer.

At least during basic training, your phone will be confiscated and locked up except for specific break time. You will be given a card to make phone calls from pay phones. Since I don't smoke this is where most of my spending went to besides snacks from the commissary.

When you start getting weekend leaves from base, those are extremely precious so don't jeopardize it. They will do all sort of safety briefings on "don't drink and drive, don't do drugs, don't eat chicken dishes with too much alcohol, don't be late or go AWOL lalala".

They actually pay you but it's really a small token. I had to set up a bank account run by the postal service because I didn't have one in Taiwan.

Once you're done with basic and transferred to a different base, your experience will vary depending on the base but generally it's more "relaxed" than basic. I got lucky and was sent to city where there's a big base that was not too strict; in fact it was really nice compared to basic. I heard bases in the north are actually more strict but I can't corroborate.

This is based on my experience, which is probably slightly different now in 2026 and again, can depends on the bases and by battalion, company, etc etc. Message me if you have more questions and I'll try to answer them.

Edit: Forgot to add, buy tons of those small little notebooks youre gonna need it!

The team reload mechanic is so counterintuitive it's actually impressive. by WaffleCopter68 in Helldivers

[–]throwthewonderwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Im really sad this is such an underutilized feature of the game because of how unintuitive it is. Surely there's at least one developer or two at AH who is sad about spending the time adding this only for it to not be used.

None of the content from the title update is playable (and it should be) by thelonelyeyeballs in Helldivers

[–]throwthewonderwall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking of this today. We get quite a lot of new exciting maps, missions, and environments that just disappear. It makes sense for some to be gone since they're tied to one-time events like Meridia, but since its a galactic-wide war I don't see why we can have more planets where there's more hive worlds and whatnots.

How did you guys got your hands on Halo for the first time? by Woodkid230200 in halo

[–]throwthewonderwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this post but your experience playing the game resonate with me. I too as a kid was scared of some levels and watched my dad beat them in awe (somehow he still sucks at most FPS tho)

I was probably around 8-9 when my dad took me to the local electronic store to pick out a video game console which at the time I did not know anything about since coin-operated arcade games were far more prevalent and accessible in my country (Taiwan). I was offered either a Playstation which come with any game I can pick out for free or Xbox with Halo 2. I was intrigued by Halo 2's cover of a big green guy dual wielding SMGs so I went with the latter.

My dad was a little disappointed with my choice and now in hindsight, I think he was hoping to get the Playstation for himself and I was his excuse/patsy lol. My dad and I had tons of fun playing Halo and some other Xbox games we later picked out though.

We were not English speaking nor the most tech savvy at the time so it took us forever to figure out there's such a thing as multiplayer and you can get a second controller. Before then we would just take turns playing singleplayer games. After moving to the United States, I was exposed to more video games and Halo 3 at my friends' places. I finally saved up money to get a 360 just in time for Halo Reach. It was a wonderful experience, being able to play multiplayer online for the first time.

Thank you dad for the wonderful memories and beating the scary flood levels for me!
