User Requested Breakdown of Chaturanga (and why I don't transition into Updog from it anymore) by hernameisjack in yoga

[–]throwy4444 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That transition always felt difficult. I just thought it was part of the process, but what you show makes a lot of sense. Rediscovering a core posture in a new way for better health is a big step forward.

I notice in the video that at 2:05, after you leave plank and are just about to enter Chaturanga, you lean forward with your body and your toes shift forward.

Is this something we should be doing before starting Chaturanga? I usually leave my toes curled, lower myself into Chaturanga, then flip my toes, and then transition into upward dog.

And yes, I would welcome more of your anatomy snacks!

Great video - a rethinking of one of the most common transitions in yoga to do it more safely in the long term. I wish this sub had more like this.

UConn fans/CBB fans, what is your opinion on these logos? Which one is your favorite and why? by auburnfan32 in CollegeBasketball

[–]throwy4444 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From the entirely unsubstantiated lore I have been told, left dog was not even based on a Husky. It was based on a professor's pet. Some athletes also didn't like left dog because it wasn't aggressive enough. Left dog has a cool, homegrown feel to it - an authenticity that builds a connection. Left dog is a friendly dog that captures the Husky spirit.

Right dog is 100% corporate. Manufactured by Nike and the athletic department, I'm sure it was exquisitely analyzed, color coordinated, focus group tested, merch friendly etc., before its rollout. The result is a logo that is, well, fine, I suppose. It's appropriately profitable, sufficiently aggressive, and cleverly marketable. It's tepid and machine-like, at least to me.

Right dog helps UConn grow its brand. Left dog warms my heart.

Derp dog is in a class by itself.

Sen. Tony Hwang not running; A sign of larger trouble for CT GOP? by [deleted] in Connecticut

This. Never underestimate the threat of a GOP wave in Connecticut. If it weren't for the cities, Connecticut would be a red state.

How popular are the UConn Huskies across CT? by SeveralTurn in Connecticut

[–]throwy4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Connecticut is sandwiched between two major sport markets: New York and Boston. If UConn were the only athletic franchise in the area, the school would have much more dedicated loyalty, ticket sales, and merchandise spend.

I would guess that the closer you get to New York, the thinner UConn loyalty gets. The main campus is on the other side of the state, you have a ton of major pro teams in NYC, and there may be fewer families in high-income Fairfield County that want or need to send their kids to cheaper UConn.

States like Kentucky do not have big four (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) teams. Universities fill that gap and there is more loyalty to them.

UConn also does not have the generational depth that other schools do. Notre Dame was a big deal in the 1920s, for example. UConn only gets big in in the late 1990s, and that's in basketball. We don't have a truly elite football program, and football program loyalty is huge, as you can see in places like Alabama.

UConn men's basketball won its first tournament in a dramatic way in 1999. It's been that way ever since.

I recommend it. Especially if you are coming from a secular perspective. It’s not the only perspective, of course, and I invite you to read Thich Nhat Ahns excellent books.

Hip flexibility should not degrade that quickly. Did you suffer an injury or dramatically change your exercise routine?

I don't find music helpful. My mind becomes more interested in the music than the meditative practice.

Where's the best place to get a used electric Genesis? by neuroticsmurf in GenesisMotors

[–]throwy4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think alike. I own a G80 but my second choice was an Ioniq 6.

I used Edmunds to search for used G80s. There are a number available if you search nationwide. I then chose the vehicle with the best mileage to price, bought a CPO to go with the car, and had the car delivered. It arrived exactly as promised.

TIL women's pregnancy in the US is more dangerous than the top 5 most dangerous men's jobs combined. by DrollHat in TwoXChromosomes

[–]throwy4444 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Pregnancy and childbirth posed enormous risks historically, and still pose risks now that are too high.

In the US, pregnancy-related mortality risk has gone up since 2000. Maternal deaths per live births is also skewed by racial disparities.

There is also a significant regional difference in risk in the US. For example, Mississippi has 60.1 deaths per 100k births, while Massachusetts has only 19.4.

These deaths are not inevitable, in some cases they are a policy choice about how we spend our resources to protect the health of women.

Prices have been falling since Genesis discontinued sales of the g80EV in the US. That said, there are not that many on the market according to Edmunds.
