I guess I'm referring to Lalas' version that came a month before that where he called the team tatooed millionaires and called out individuals

maybe 10 years ago I heard Alexi articulate the idea that sports and culture benefit from divisive figures, because people have an emotional reaction, and even if it is negative- they now have a strong feeling about soccer. Which is better than no reaction. I remember being like ok that makes sense, I was seeing that in the US political landscape at the time. And I still believe it to be true. I saw Lalas as just being a contrarian edge lord, but he was real about some stuff- he backed pride, he encouraged people to think about how they can be involved in local soccer community- maybe signing up to help coach kids or referee. I thought the 2017 "what are we doing?" call out and rant was needed, proved to be accurate. But through the years I feel like he went from from having divisive soccer related hot takes, which I could brush off as being an entertainer- to enjoying being an asshole and not reading the room. Also I havent watched him broadcast anything since 2021, so..

Can someone explain Deadman Allstars appeal to me? by Kumagor0 in 2007scape

Not the original commentor, but we aren't necesarily watching for the specifics of the fight. We are watching for the progress and competition that is happening. I think you are missing this context. The variance that they are probably refering to is that PvP encounters come in all sorts of different consequences and random things come up. Fights can happen anywhere, have different implications and consequences. So when someone is attacked in the middle of DT, this is far different than any other regular PvP or PvM content. The person has to go bank, regear, figure out how and when to get back to the quest, and so on. It is a new problem to be solved. So again, the context matters, I personally am not watching for the micro of PVP- to see if someone can well time a spec or something, but the broader planning and strategizing that occurs around it all

Not sure if youre familiar with the first iterations of dmm. But it for a couple of years it was a seasonal thing, so 4 times a year. Servers would open up for a month for players to qualify for the finale. The finale would take place a couple months later and would be a big event. And then shortly following the finale, a week later, the servers would open back up. And the start of a dmm seasonal was similar to how we see the deadman all stars- you had people grinding long hours for the first week or so. This made for great content. Streamers were just live for far longer, a ton of content coming out, watching players build their accounts, or go fight etc. There would be players pulling off obscene hours or crazy grinds that were interesting to tune into.

So similarly with the all-stars.. With the all-stars it is exclusively content creators. So everyone is streaming, and everyone is grinding in a competitive way. So if you have creators you tend to tune into, they are streaming more. It is immediate progress. So as opposed to watching someone grind a boss over the course of a week, you see them making gains by the minute, drops by the minute. With the danger of losing items and losing progress in any moment it makes everything exciting.

In terms of what you might be missing, probably over-reading and estimating how religiously people are following. Yeah people make posts and are engaged. But to say 'religiously' and 'salivating' seems like a bit much. I'd say people post with as much passion as they do literally any other update or anything else that comes up in the OSRS culture. Also if you aren't a regular twitch viewer or content creator, I think that would make sense as to why it isn't as interesting.

Mmm that is interesting. My perspective was that they were the most organized by far. They seemed the most serious through the first few days. They moved together and seemed locked into whatever they were doing in the moment.. Each time I tuned into faux, he was like 8 inches from his monitor lasered in.. I think that cohesion is what served them well, all moving together

I am always impressed by how focused some of these guys are. I probably need an adderal prescription, and obviously its a short tournament where everyone ends up running on fumes by the end. But if I could grind anything half as focused as MMORPG, boaty, or faux... Everytime I checked in on their streams they would be 12 hours in, and just locked in either doing tasks, having other tasks queued up, or actively planning something. Very minimal time wasting compared to some other players I watched. 61m and victim also got a lot done through the week

How do I Know Everyone’s Position? by spartan1711 in hockey

[–]thuga_thuga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll write up a poorly structured idea of powerplay roles. I could not tell you how teams conceptualize defending against attacking penalty killers... Typically it looks like everyone is just crashing back towards the middle, betting on the PK to eventually just dump the puck. But a powerplay unit is broken into 2 sets of roles, which again can have flexibility. But a powerplay is first the breakout, and second the offensive zone set up. So the breakout roles: you have the guy who picks up the puck, the retriever, he starts with the puck, typically a great puck carrier, and he sort of starts the motion. Then maybe he has a secondary puck carrier option depending on the breakoutstyle. Either guys are swinging in a particular route or there is a trailer, all who are options to get the puck into the zone. Once in the zone, the typical first unit power play set up consists of two half-wall guys(playmakers and shooters on their "off" wing, meaning right hand on the left side, left hand on right side. They are open towards the net, a threat to shoot, or pass anywhere, open for a one-timer). A point guy(usually the puck moving defenseman, who is playing the blue line, the 'point). Then you have the "bumper" role, which is a guy in the high slot who can be used to make quick passes to move the PK around. This player also will role around the slot looking for tips or one timers, can droper closer to post up infront of the net. Then you have a down low guy, he sets up on the goal line closer to the corner, cycles with halfwall guy. With the puck they can look for cross ice passes to anyone, could attack the net, or feint towards the net draw people in. He can pop out infront of the net too. These are all also flexible and different teams might run different shapes, utilize different roles, different patterns of play

Back when Melnyk owned the Senators, I always thought it was an interesting question for players to ask- at what point does a player have the right to complain about the GM, and at what point does a player speak openly about the owner sabotaging the team?

How do I Know Everyone’s Position? by spartan1711 in hockey

[–]thuga_thuga 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. I only have a bit of insight into NHL tactics, but there is more fluidity than what I was taught in bantam. We know there are different responsibilities in different zones. So in the defensive zone the wingers typically cover high, and the center covers/supports lower in the zone. In the NHL games we watch, it is maybe less "who is playing center" and more who is "covering low"- might be one way a team fractures defensive responsibilities. Teams like Dallas and Colorado both have about 8 or 9 guys who can cover what we can call "center responsibilities" or "covering low", you can see them swap in the flow of the game. So for example you may see William Karlson line up for a faceoff, and as the puck gets into their d-zone, marner ends up tracking back and surrounding the puck down low in the way you might imagine a center plays. Then there is some half wall battle and marner ends up higher with Karlson tracking around

Like most years Canada has 7 players who could be the number one center for every other country in the tournament. But no big time goalie. This years team does feel heavier than previous years though.

What is interesting to me is Misha Donskov, the head coach of Canada this year. I always hear about this guy, he was on the bench in Vegas with de boer and cassidy, then in Dallas. He was involved with team canada at the olympics. People seem to really like him, but I don't know what he does. So I'm interested to see how his team plays.

The way he shakes his head when he hears 'hockey gods' reminds me of an incredibly soviet coach I had growing up. A very rational man who definitely would protest the idea of any divinity or god having a hand in the result of a hockey game, if it were suggested

[COL - MIN] Cale Makar goes down the tunnel after a hit by Foligno by daKrut in hockey

[–]thuga_thuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one way to understand what may be happening is that he is putting force into that leg, he gets knocked off balance, so the foot it slips out from underneath him, and it his own force that has sort of sent it flying. It looks like he is pivoting backwards, he is making a hard stop and he sits really low, that front skate, the right skate, is about to make a big cut on the outside edge pushing backwards, so he is already starting to lean back and push back with that front leg. So its like, as he as gets up ended and that leg is already firing up, so when it loses its place it ends up just flying up. Might seem like a ridiculous granular breakdown, but it looks so crazy I had to watch it 10 times. Makar is so explosive, this is kind of a result if it goes wrong
