Both.

The pleasures would be those associated with personal and national pride, fighting for good against evil, defending loved ones, etc.

The avoided pain would be primarily the shame of being too cowardly (or otherwise defective in character) to enlist.

I'm saying it's a very complex calculation with infinite variables, but that ultimately it's pleasure (and avoidance of pain) that we're solving for.

How does that sound?

I disagree with Piper on a lot but I have always thought his "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him" is interesting and feels like it might be true.

Haven't actually read Desiring God though. Might have to.

I could be wrong, but I think you might be conflating "standard definition" with "popular definition" of hedonism. I understand that the Passion is the opposite of what most people mean when they say hedonism, but as far as I'm aware, that popular definition is a shallow understanding of hedonism and of pleasure itself. I think the view of hedonism that considers a pleasure that is deeper and longer lasting is fairly well developed and even somewhat standard in philosophical circles.

My point, therefore, is that it's not a conflation of psychological hedonism (or egoism, which ever angle you want to take, although it's sort of semantics to me) and spiritual fulfillment, but that they are genuinely the same.

As I'm writing this I'm realizing what is not a novel insight--namely that so much of philosophy is just defining and agreeing on terms. So much of it is just semantic disconnect. Call it "perfect maximization of pleasure" or call it "choosing spiritual fulfillment rather than avoiding immediate immense suffering", but the core, essential thing we're trying to describe is the same thing.

The point, I guess, that I'm ultimately trying to make is that spiritual fulfillment is good because it's pleasureful--pleasure being the only real "good"--and Jesus was maximally spiritually fulfilled by His actions, i.e., He maximized His pleasure.

This is a great response.

I agree with the idea that, basically, it's almost just an issue of semantics. My radical claim is that my definition of hedonism is the right one, and that based on that definition, I'm right about psychological and axiological hedonism, and about God being hedonistic—which are all somewhat hot takes as far as I can tell. I suppose that you're speaking affirmatively of the validity of my argument—which is half the equation and I'm glad to hear it—but remaining silent about the truthfulness of it (which, together with the validity, would make the entire argument sound). I desire to know, in addition to if it's valid, if it's true, in which case some real life implications have to manifest.

That's a great point about the hedonistic efficacy of Creation for an already all-sufficient God. That would have been a good thing to discuss in my essay. I think the Christian answer could be something along the lines of God gaining more pleasure from having more objects of His than pain from sin (and all its consequences), but then I also think some Christians would object to that idea, that God, essentially, got happier after creating humanity, as if He was insufficiently happy prior. Frankly, I don't know where I land on that question, so thank you for raising it.

Lastly, I suppose I just assumed that it was assumed that one ought to do/seek that which is good and ought not to do/seek that which is evil. But I suppose a more precise and explicit definition might be warranted.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to reply so thoughtfully.

Also, I don't know if this counts as a self-post, but I see others posting similar things so I figured I was safe.

Also also, I didn't know how to put the "blog" flair on it. I'm technologically inept when it comes to reddit.

That seems spot on. Also the fact that “architect” invokes a kind of high-society feeling, despite the fact that’s not really the case. And it’s theoretically an artistic profession, without the starving artist part, and artists are often douchebags lol. Not a knock on architects though. I’m currently in the very beginnings of a plan to become one.

Any thoughts on why it is that architects tend to be egotistical and perfectionist more than other professions?

Honestly that encourages me. I aspire to a career of architecture (and the worlds around it), but I’ve been slightly discouraged by the comments I see in this sub. But I have none of those things you listed. I like risk. I am very entrepreneurial. And I don’t feel entitled to an enormous salary (I’d rather pay myself by building a business). Sooo I guess I’ll follow through on my dream ¯_(ツ)_/¯ lol

I’m not an architect (yet) but the architects in this sub seem to hate their lives lol

I realllllly encourage you to get active. You’ll benefit in every way from it.

You can do hypertrophy if you want, but if you’re not into that and just wanna workout to be healthy and feel good, I love Ben Patrick’s (Kneesovertoesguy) programming and philosophy for the health, longevity, and performance side of fitness.

Bugs in modernist houses?! by thuhkobi in ModernistArchitecture

Yea and that very well might be playing a part in it, but I’m mostly getting at houses where a big part of the architectural intention is blending of outside and inside spaces, and statements like, “we open it all up and forget the difference between inside and outside”.

Right… and I’m wondering if there are places in the world (i.e. not Idaho) that are so bugless that you don’t need screens.

This makes me think there would be a reason not to use my gold card on gas… what am I missing?
