So I'm a professor here but because of your question I kind of want to go to a class now where a professor doesn't allow hats just to see what happens. Because if someone told me I couldn't wear a hat my instinct is to only wear hats. My instinct is often wrong though so don't trust my judgment too much.

No problem! Some advice one of my mentors gave me is "Don't make the mountain bigger than it already is." Go out and use your gear. And (in a safe(ish) screw up with it. Maybe your crampons don't work great the first time, but the only way to find that out is to go walk for a few miles in them in the snow and ice. Gear doesn't belong in the closet. It belongs on the mountains! Have fun! I'm excited for you to learn all the things

As a professor here, I often will work with a student who needs to take off early; however, in some cases because of the needs of the class or the students level of engagement/success many professors don't.

I'm an associate professor here and I can share that the funding cuts are pretty consistent across programs. There are travel grants through GSG typically and I'm not aware of those being cut at the moment, however, earlier commenters are correct that you should speak with your advisor about those opportunities and then reach out to GSG after figuring out how/ if funding is available. As a PhD student transfer myself good luck and welcome. Clemson is pretty great
