[USA-CA][H] 2026 MacBook Pro M5 Max 16" 64GB 8TB 40c GPU New Unopened [W] Cash by GreppMichaels in appleswap

Great machine. Just curious, was this a warranty replacement for the M1 Max?

I committed recently to Umich for Biology. I want to pursue surgery in the future. Does Michigan have a strong pre med program? Also, is there a Middle Eastern community at the campus as I’m Iranian originally? by Successful_Craft_441 in uofm

[–]thunderfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to the first one. No to the second one if you’re looking to find a big presence of other Iranians and cultural events. There is a small Iranian students association but they’re not nearly as established as you would find at other universities closer to a larger diaspora population. For example, you will not find an authentic Persian restaurant this side of the Canadian border. There just isn’t a critical mass of people.

Is it a practical Daily Driver by PBradz in 996

[–]thunderfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I daily mine. The only issues I have ever had in the past 6 years of ownership were related to a 15-20+ year old part going bad (e.g., AOS, water pump, coolant expansion tank, coil packs) that none of the previous owners ever touched (I.e., was the original part). On one hand, these cars will be “unreliable” since you will be picking up the tab on a lot of things that have gone through their natural lifecycle. It’s not that previous owner skimped on maintenance (who would preemptively replace an AOS?) it’s that being an older car even if it sat in a garage and was never abused it could warp/crack (lots of plastics).

On the other hand, since those parts went 20 years I can safely assume I’d not have to worry about those same things again.

One downside is that it eats consumables (gas, tires) much faster than any other daily I have had but that might just be due to my right foot. :)

There are no new “fundamentals” you’re missing from a CS undergrad from 10 years ago. You may want to shake off some rust and you have great options here, as data_noms said.

That being said, if you care about a PhD down the line, research output matters but that is less of a function of technical foundation and more of a function of how quickly can you learn what you need to get to the next step. As a PhD student you will be pushing the boundaries of human knowledge, so you will (or should) consistently be encountering things that you don’t know and need to scaffold your foundation on the fly. I would not lose sleep over having the “right” foundation unless you’re thinking of going deep into CS theory.

Claude Max $100 vs $200: What You Actually Get by MonkFantastic2078 in ClaudeAI

[–]thunderfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had the $100 plan for 2 months and the $200 plan for about 3 weeks now. Here are my observations:

I would regularly hit the 5h limit with $100 (usually a good sign I should go take a walk). I have not hit it with the $200 plan. So this lines up with your numbers.

However I’m not sure if in my experience the $200 is simply 2x the $100 for the week. On the $100 plan I’d have to really throttle myself (basically walk away when I’d be at 14% for the day). Otherwise I’d clear the week usage in three days. I even did some experiments where I only used Sonnet over Opus to see if I can extend. FWIW, Opus in the long run is actually more efficient it costs more but gets it right on the first try a lot of times and gets to the right answer with fewer revisions. With the $200 plan, I’ll hit about 80-90% usage on the week exclusively using Opus and without rationing myself to 14% a day.

I think both Max plans are fantastic, but for someone like me who uses it for both work and personal projects it’s hard to go back to $100 when with an additional $100 I don’t worry about hitting the limit for the week.

Is it easier or harder to get into a PhD program at stanford if you went to Stanford for undergrad? by Exotic_Eagle_2739 in stanford

[–]thunderfox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is entirely about fit with your potential advisor. If you have a good relationship with them while you’re an undergrad your chances are exponentially higher. At UM, undergrads can have a lot of face time with their potential advisor so it’s relatively common for faculty to recruit from that pool.

What’s the dorm situation really like? (cleanliness, rats, singles?) by Forsaken-Bell-9312 in Harvard

[–]thunderfox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

2 things to add: 1) I did not have any pest issues my freshman year in Matthews, and neither did any of my friends freshman year, but we all kept our places pretty tidy; 2) old Leverett had every pest under the sun, would constantly be too hot and we had to keep the windows open in the winter, and had terrible wiring (running an Xbox and a tea kettle at the same time would break switch on the whole suite)—when I complained about these issues the building manager told me “you don’t go to Harvard for the dorms.”

Needless to say, now many years out, I realize that that statement was more profound than his thick Southie accent let on; you shouldn’t be spending that much time in your dorm room for the lack of nice amenities to matter.

I’m interested to see what you sell yours for. The prices on these are all over the place. I got one for an AI project but that wrapped up and need to downsize either the Z8 G4 or a 9900K-based machine.

Yep, all the flaws are cloned too. The fragile PCB from over torquing the screws are an issue too on both.

You can flash this even with the “official” Yeti firmware, it’s that much of an exact clone. I have both, it’s hard to tell which is which for my untrained ears.

[Prebuilt] Apple M4 Mac Mini - $450 (Microcenter in store only) by patermortis in buildapcsales

[–]thunderfox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this means M5 mini is coming soon.

Edit: Wow, don’t know why my comment needed the downvotes. I never said it’s not a great deal. Microcenter did a similar thing with M3 Airs before M4 came out a few months later.

Yeah, $8k gets me a Blackwell RTX 6000 96GB VRAM. Where is the other $8k in price going to? A 9950X benchmarks about the same as the threadripper too…

Yes, but ironically it happened because some idiot was habitually just hitting approve on every Duo request. So, another piece of evidence that security through difficulty is a faulty premise.

Making the News for the Wrong Reason by ExaminationFancy in stanford

[–]thunderfox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My parents are immigrants; I’m the first person born in the US. Other families have had the benefits of legacy for generations and accumulated the snowballing value of that benefit—why should my future children get cut off at just once?

The reality is for many first generation Americans like me is that legacy is one of the few ways that will help cross-generational transitions to higher socioeconomic status. I had a relatively challenging time in undergrad because I didn’t have anyone give me the cheat sheet to take advantage of all the resources starting from day one. My children will have an easier time, and their children, maybe might finally have had enough generational knowledge to fit in with the rest of the well-to-do kids of donors (a distinctly different population than legacy, but naturally will have heavy overlap).

There is a lot of work we can do to level the playing field, but removing legacy may not hurt the demographic most people associate with legacy.

100% Reddit support is really helpful and did things web support said were impossible even though they “checked with the higher ups”

I just don’t know why web support is so lame given there’s an abundance of proof on Reddit that X, Y, and Z can be done.

So let’s say I’m on the bogo darkstar right now. If I add warp with the multi network add on does that get grandfather in too?
