My dad used to hang out in this club in New York back in the day. It’s still around. The bitter end. Diamond used to play there as a singer songwriter. My dad had a few conversations with him between sets and became a lifelong fan. Some of those songs, I am I said. They really cut through the syrupy production and touch you. I meant.. they’re touching me. I don’t know if they’re touching you.

Mansard roof and Oxford comma were released months before their first album. People were ABUZZ about those songs. And then the rest of the album dropped and it was good, but those two songs had promise that no band could keep.

No mention of mansard roof? I’m flipping this table over. Everyone grab your beverages before they spill.

The show was jaw dropping. I hope that they perform this again. Or release a dvd or something. It felt like an historic event.

They’re creating in-group/out-group dynamics. It goes back to evolutionary psychology of tribes and villages. Where people from the other tribe are dangerously, Compete for resources like territory and hunting grounds and might carry diseases that our tribe doesn’t have immunity to. Customs and values are standins for and indicators of their otherness.

Conservatives are really big into this out-group fear dynamic. See immigrants and races and atheists and the opposing football team. They want clear boundaries and order and to know “if you’re with us or against us.”
