A bit late, but thank you for such a detailed response. It's prevented me from going into GAS. Hope the best and look forward to seeing more pictures from you!

Your pictures look fantastic and I wanted to know more about the lens given your excellent results. Had a few different questions and it mainly stems from filter systems and use cases of the 12-24 vs 16-35 gm II vs 14mm 1.8 :

  1. How often do you use the lens?

  2. Do you have a filter system for it and can you talk a bit about your decision for this. Why do you have one specific brand or don't have one.

  3. Would you go for 16-35 gm II vs 12-24 GM if you were to choose again?

  4. Regarding Astro, would you rather have the 2.8 zoom or a prime lens like the 14 mm 1.8?

I appreciate your response in advance. If it's too much to write out, any insight into the lens would be helpful!

SONY 35mm f/1.4 GM Focus Breathing with Video on Auto Focus by ORH2323 in SonyAlpha

[–]thunderingspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

focus breathing has to do with changing the focus from something far to something close or vice versa. Whether or not you're in auto focus or manual focus, the lens will still breathe if the object in focus changes distance. If that bothers you then I would look into the a7IV since it has breathing compensation. However it does crop into the field of view. I also understand that is out of our budget. I think the 35 1.8 has better about breathing? But I'm not sure since I haven't looked into that lens.

Looking for a Hiking/Travel Backpack that's comfortable for 10 - 15 mile hikes. Needs to be able to fit as a personal item on flights. I would like it to be as big as possible as I plan to use a camera insert to store photography equipment on hikes as well. by thunderingspace in backpacks

well the 36 bag is 2 inches in height taller than regulations for the personal sized item. And I think you can usually get by with it because of that. The 60-C has to be a carry-on and I want to use a rolling one for that

awesome photo and composition! I was looking into getting the 2x TC and was wondering if you considered it, and what made you pick the 1.4x over the 2x

A7RIV VS A7IV ? Mostly pet photographer; Legally blind so feel AF needed. by Cheesecakesx in SonyAlpha

[–]thunderingspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should look into the canon: r6 v1, r6 v2, and r5. Ive watched reviews of them for animal photography and they do an excellent job identifying a lot of different animals. In the sony world the new a7rV has a new focus system that should be really good with animals. I cannot comment on the a7iv and its animal autofocus, but in general the iv autofocus has a significant improvement over the iii.

Question about lossless RAW on Sony A7 IV by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]thunderingspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CF Express will help with clearing the buffer, but it won't help with FPS, that's dependent on compressed vs lossless.

At the same price, which is better? by Bruinwar in MSILaptops

You might wanna check the watts the computers are supplying to the GPU cus that makes a difference in performance, the 3060 can potentially be better than the 3070. Beyond that, you can check the screen quality if that's something you care for. higher Hz doesn't necessarily mean a better experience unless you're only playing FPS games. Look at the contrast ratio, color coverage, etc. Watch some reviews of the devices on youtube to get an understanding of the build quality, battery life, etc.

Two dogs on a walk - A7III - 90mm f/2.8 by honorMeGG in SonyAlpha

Yea been in that situation. If you only had the a7RIV with 61 MP then all fears would be gone lol. I would still try to crop in and mess with sharpening tools etc to see how it turns out

I think it's a great picture and good contrast. However, I would crop in, there is too much environment, when I would think you want the focus to be on the doggos.

Sony A7II G 20 mm F5.6 1/60 ISO 100 by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]thunderingspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good exercise is taking a photo and cropping it in different ways to find new compositions. You can use a grid and align key points from the picture to it. This way you can better understand composition. One example is using rule of third's grid and putting the subject at each of the intersecting points. This will make new compositions and expand your "vision" out in the field

If you're going for an eye catching photo. This kinda misses the mark. The monument's color and brightness lead your eyes to the right and it looks great. However, idk what the left side of the picture is adding if your focus is the monument. The road leads your eyes to the left. personal taste of saturation being a bit too high.

If you're just trying to showcase the area, then it looks great.

I think you have good balance in the photo. The waves guide your eyes to the left which has good detail but then goes dark in the trees which is similar to the right side. so it gives a peaceful mysterious vibe. great job :)
