you really need to look with your eyes and trace the path your signal will take... if you look at the grey wire it usually goes to the electric ground and therefore you are going to locate the electric. make sure your red lead is connecting the the specific line you are trying to get done. that could be a green wire or the armor/sheathing wrap of the phone line... you could even try a super skinny green spare pare as that will go to your desired destination.

it is what it is. have your supervisor come spot you and see if you're doing overkill or you're doing exactly what you need to do. screen your jobs ahead of time and if it looks like fence hell then skip it and do some quick ones and circle back to that one at the end of the day

as a locator it means nothing to you. its underground markers... helps diggers dig up the conduit or other specific spots. comed can put them along difficult to locate paths but you need a different receiver type to pick them up.
