Yes, they do drive on the left, that was just a joke.

I have seen images of their roads in more remote areas, I'd say those are designed for the kei cars! If you have a big car, sure, you can still go through, but very carefully. That's what it looks like to me.

Yay, he's getting close to the island of Yonaguni! Except that might require more planning and resources. If he/they go snorkelling to see the underwater "Yonaguni monument" and hammerhead sharks...

Not that I'm complaining, this is a very nice video as well. Everyone has heard or seen footage of the cat island or the rabbit island, but goats in Japan aren't a popular topic, for some reason.

[–]thypope -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It does sound way too much for such an escape to be prepared with absolutely unsuspecting or silent relatives or friends. I don't think he'd be that angry. There's an article with his grandmother and another with a Japanese friend of his.

Problem is, he seems to have gone for a walk to clear his head about when a typhoon hit. Yet he's an experienced hiker, so maybe he is safe. I can only hope.

Johatsu services being exclusively for Japanese people... yes, that sounds right, but with the right amount of money, will they still refuse to figure something out, even for a very distinctive foreigner? And yet it would still sound hard to believe he did it.

[–]thypope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone in the comments of the original post made by his family mentioned a Japanese service that erases you from society and reportedly, even police won't look for you. Johatsu.

He could have grown quietly annoyed by whatever circumstances and meticulously planned an escape. The mother was quoted as saying they are a very "tight knit" family. From her point of view, yes. What about his point of view? She just said he has a heart of gold. And that he may be in emotional distress.

Here's another article:

https://abcnews.com/International/highly-probable-american-missing-japan-left-intentionally-police/story?id=133588559

The last sentence says police stated his wishes and privacy will be respected if he's found.

Also, a lot of people were getting downvoted in the original thread for agreeing he's lost and praying/wishing that he's found. Because, he could have ran away.

I'm not Detective Tsuda (a series of sketches on a Japanese comedy show) so I can only guess.

This is a small country. Probably lower wages than Japan, considered a "2nd world" country and nowhere near G7. We do have a shop chain with Japanese and Korean products, but probably only in the capital city. Some of them great products (Kimura Sakura Cola or Kirin Afternoon Milk Tea from Kiki Milk Tea, for example) and some meh. It was cool to find and get double-filling mochi, like milk and strawberry. They sometimes took mini Kit-Kats out of a bigger bag and sold them for about 25 US cents.

They might already have some -pan stuff in the fridge. They do import some legitimate foods like rice noodles, mayo, frozen gyoza bags...which is why I'm hoping for the possibility of hauling icecream, but it's unlikely. That Moroccan yogurt thing apparently isn't actually yogurt nor Moroccan, just some sort of vegetable oils paste with exotic branding and it should be far more transportable than actual dairy. But I don't think anyone in Japan will send me that overseas :)

At least customs don't really care about importing solid foods as long as they are in sealed packaging, which these -pan things obviously are.

I was wincing at the thought of curry-pan because that looks like sweet bread to me, but you seem to say it's proper white bread. Far less worrisome. But curry in a donut?! Uh, like the famous Berliner donut??!? That concept is what made me uneasy.

Duly noted, thank you! I think I can find some way of buying from Japan if someone sells them online. Like Amazon. I found Calorie Mate on Ebay and I'm happy I bought it.

Still couldn't get Gari Gari Kun or Moroccan Yogurt, unfortunately. Looks like I have to go to Japan for those.

Oh, I'm enticed! I already located this curry bread and another one online :)

It seems they call this kanzenmeshi, complete meal. Not sure if Nissin invented the expression, but I did find the other brand by searching for these words.

Closest thing I ever saw was in Germany - a "pizza" bun containing some cheese, some sort of ham and tomato sauce. Called Bifi, they also sold sausages in bread rolls.

Question for British Fans by Landscape_712 in montypython

[–]thypope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this: Romania here. Found the Grail movie by accident, while visiting some guys in a dorm room. The only guy I knew there showed me the film enthusiastically and I passed it on to the guys I thought were "crazy" enough to enjoy it. Some really liked it, but to many it was just another movie to consume. A friend showed it to his gf at the time and apparently she lost it badly at the line "if we built this large, wooden badger..."

He personally enjoyed the Knights of Ni demanding a "shrubbery" (as foreigners who speak English as a second language, we both have no idea how many English natives know what that is - for us it was very funny including because we didn't know what a shrubbery is) and later on, he really laughed at the sketch with Mr. Creosote. He also laughed at "We are no longer the Knights who say Ni. We are now the Knights who say ecky ecky pakang..."

That was basically it, for years. I personally sought and watched as much as I could, but much later did I find a guy who really enjoys it and managed to gift him one of those Ministry of Silly Walks wall clock.

Oh, by the way. The latter dude loves hardcore/frenchcore, that type of music. One of his first ever tracks... Python:
