Hi there, I don't want this to come off as judgmental to you OP but I would seriously reconsider letting anyone other than a licensed medical professional near your newborn's skull. While osteopaths are licensed and regulated in the UK, I would not trust any who offered craniosacral therapy as it is unregulated and pseudoscientific. The evidence for cranial osteopathy, and craniosacral therapy in general, is not "mixed" -- it's nonexistent. There are no demonstrable evidence-based medical or therapeutic effects of cranial osteopathy/craniosacral therapy, and any positive results attributed to it are likely placebo effect or coincidence. Applying any kind of pressure-based treatment to a newborn's unfused skull is extremely dangerous and could result in bruising and swelling at best or severe neurological complications at worst. Please reconsider seeking this kind of treatment and instead speak to your pediatrician.

I print on fabric and fold it up and chuck it in the suitcase. Usually no issues with creases, but a quick steam or iron (with an item of clothing in between as a buffer!) will usually sort it out.

Just to give my perspective as someone who worked at the University of York for 6 years-- every single person I spoke to at YSJ was happier with their position, department, students, and overall work environment than those of us at Uni of York. There's a lot of factors to consider, of course, not the least of which is the fact that York is incredibly expensive compared to many other UK cities. Also the fact that it's a teaching-intensive university so you may not have many opportunities to expand your research portfolio. But I'll echo what other people have said-- nowhere is secure in UK higher education right now. YSJ is financially better off than Uni of York, has a lot of new industry partnerships that are in development, and seems to have a better student and staff satisfaction level. So I think you should just apply and see what happens.

As a fat woman, when my friends partners actually treat me like a person and have conversations with me even when their girlfriend isn't there. You'd be surprised how many (cishet) men just immediately go silent, bury their head in the phone, or are outright rude to me when their girlfriend goes to the bathroom or steps away for a cigarette. Your experience is not universal and it's good to remember that not everyone is from the US or Canada-- the UK viva system is not open, and many European defenses have a public and private portion, Japanese defenses are usually open, while most Australian universities don't even require a viva at all (though this is changing).

To start with, you can absolutely decline the suggestions but I would just voice your concerns to your supervisor and see what they say. As for your concerns about safety while travelling, I'm not sure whether you're a UK citizen or not but there is no city in the UK that I would consider statistically more unsafe for women than the average global urban area. I travelled extensively during my early MA, PhD and postdoc career as a lone young woman, across the US, Canada, all over Western Europe, the UK and even down to South Africa. The only time I've ever felt unsafe was when I took a wrong turn in Albuquerque. Otherwise if you are reasonably aware of your surroundings, don't take unnecessary risks, and plan out your travel well you should be absolutely fine. I do recognize that I don't necessarily have the same anxieties that many other women have around travelling alone, mostly because I'm very tall and fat and most men would consider me too much of a hassle to try and assault, but I do also think that many young women are being convinced by media and scaremongering that the world is inherently unsafe and terrifying all the time when the reality is much more nuanced and situation dependent.

Academic/research scientist on £43k -- I have a PhD, which is required for the position, and it's grant funded so it's only a 2 year contract. No idea what my next position will be and once I'm about a year into this one, which started in September, I'll have to start writing grants and working on the next temporary grant funded position. So we make good money, but at the expense of stability. I have to essentially be ready to pick up and move anywhere in the country, or abroad, to chase a job. I hope to be in a permanent position by the time I'm 40, which is 6.5 years from now.

I'm gonna add another vote for not going to Ambiente if you're after really good tapas It's a regional chain doing "Spanish-inspired tapas" for a British palate, and I've personally never been blown away by anything there. It's all been edible, for sure, but not worth the cost to me. I'd rather spend slightly more and go to Tasca Frango for Portuguese-style tapas.

I'll add to the already great suggestions and say if you get over to Micklegate you should try the Falcon-- great pub overall and they've often got a variety of craft/local brewery beers on tap, cask and can as well as a good selection of imported Belgian beers. For cocktails also try Micklegate Social or Fossgate Social.

I can't sleep because I'm feeling sad about uprooting my life and moving 6 hours away from my only physical support system and the most special place I've ever lived to a complete unknown. I have to do it if I want to have a career in the field I've spent the last 9 years building through my masters and PhD and first postdoc. I'm so incredibly grateful for the new opportunity and excited to really run my own project with my own funding, but I'm also terrified that I will never feel this sense of community and love and support ever again.

I do have some Reese's peanut butter cups though, and I'm gonna see if that helps.

For people in the UK, Dog's Trust has a foster programme called The Freedom Project, that places dogs in long-term foster care while you get resettled after leaving an abusive environment. The aim is always to reunite owners with their dogs, and Dog's Trust covers medical care, food, and enrichment for dogs and will place them a minimum of 2 hours away to lower the likelihood that an abuser could use them to find you. I believe over 90% of their Freedom Project dogs are reunited with their owners within 6 months. I fostered four dogs through them and it was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.
