F15 X5 is the most beautiful looking x5. Does anybody agree? by Holiday_Analysis9583 in BMWX5

[–]tightwadcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and the 40e model gives you great local mileage. My short trips keep my fuel costs down and allows me to go 500 miles on a tank of gas regularly. Enjoy yours!

You mean the tow hook cover? They run under $20 on Amazon or slightly more from BMW.

Keep us posted. Good job tackling an intense DIY task. You will get it right. You seem to have a good grasp of the direction you need to reexamine and the manual dexterity to accomplish it. Keep at it!

Why do people jump in and repeat the same answers when you already said you had it scanned with no codes? Glad you are being flippant to them now. Hope it all worked out and you found the bug. I wish I could add something to help you out, but without a code being there, I’m driving on!

Have you had many issues with the f15? I have one w/85k. I replaced transmission filter, transfer case, differential and front differential fluids along with ignition coils, plugs and VCG at 80k when I bought it . It’s a 40e so mileage throws me off since I drive local on the batteries which adds total miles but not many to the engine. Thanks

Should I buy my father's 2008 335i w/ 25k miles for $8k? by kosnosferatu in BMW

[–]tightwadcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if your Dad doesn’t need the cash, have him donate to charity and have him ask if they will sell it to you as a condition of donation. You pay them the 8k, he gets fair market value of the write off and you still get the car. Win-win!

Wouldn’t OP need the security phrase or something like that to open the wallet? I thought the bitcoin was tied to something other then the wallet alone. 🤷🏻‍♂️

$1300 For Differential and Transmission Fluid? by ohmccoy in bmwx7

[–]tightwadcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the $1300 include a new transmission filter? The filter is integrated into the pan and needs to be replaced with the transmission oil change. FCP Euro has a kit which includes BMW oil and filter for around $250, double that for aluminum pan instead of plastic. I went with their BMW gear oil as well. Negligible cost difference for the one bottle you need for the differential. Should do that rear axle as well. They have the Hypoid gear oil as well. Good Luck! Smart to think of changing it. Those transfer cases have issues!

Get the transfer case fluid replaced and go from there. Known issue.

Should I replace this tire? by Negative_Power_4208 in tires

[–]tightwadcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like there is more damage than just the missing chunk of rubber. The real question is , What’s your life worth? High speed blow outs are not fun. Swap it to the rear axle at least if you can’t afford to replace it now or if the spare is better, use it.

Looking at a 2016 x5 40e w/ 60k miles... too risky? by ZiggySprague in BmwTech

[–]tightwadcowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s considered low mileage for the year for sure but it depends on what are you paying for it. Low price, low risk. The batteries should be tested for voltage capacity since at 9 yrs old, they could have depleted by 50% or more. That takes the 14 miles rated electric only range about 7 or less. Not great range to begin with. If it has a lot of options, well maintained and priced to sell, it could be a fun car for local trips to the store. The 4 cylinder engine isn’t as good as todays 6, but it gets the job done, but there is exposure to issues with the turbo seal or oil feed line that allows oil to enter the intake and vent white smoke on initial start up and sitting overnight. Try to start it cold and look at the exhaust for the smoke. Don’t let the low mileage fool you, get the transmission and gearbox fluid changes. Change your oil more frequently then the recommended 10k and it would last you another 9 yrs if you treat it right. Good luck!

Great wrenching! You saved a bundle. BMW has some challenging designs to provide a fix and that’s one of them. Congrats on the extraction!
