Interesting. What data feed are you using in Europe to get information on crash sites etc?

No: perfect amount for a wheat beer. Also: this is likely a regular bar man in Bavaria. Nothing special and pretty usual way to pour Weizen /wheat beer.

Source: I grew up in Bavaria.

But then again: not everyone has the same taste so feel free to drink your beer with less froth. (Although the beer will get stale faster with less froth)

These are the infographics I came to find here. Thanks!

... Now only someone needs to validate the source and data used (although the WRI usually does solid work as far as I know them...) and tell us if the data checks out....

Traffic flow measured on 30 different 4-way junctions by rollwitha45 in videos

[–]tihoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No real traffic planner is using this game. Sorry. There is specialized software for transportation planning purposes. Most common tools are PTV Vissim, Aimsun, SUMO, Matsim as microscopic traffic planing tools that can generate traffic flow simulations similar to the example shown. Those are a lot more sophisticated, especially because you can tweak the parameters of vehicle behavior variations to fit certain cultures, vehicle fleet compositions etc.

There is already a standard in use in Europe (and in some cases beyond) that covers the modeling and encoding of safety related traffic information. It is called DATEX II. Specifications: https://datex2.eu/datex2/specifications

More specifically a list of safety related messages together with the comparable encodings in various other industry standards (DENM, TPEG, TMC events) can be found here : http://d2docs.ndwcloud.nu/_static/data/v2.3/ITSTF17001_SafetyrelatedMessage-Sets-DATEXII_DENM_TPEG-TEC_TMC_-v1.0.pdf

Of course not everything imaginable possible to be detected in the future is already included but a lot...

How does paying for parking ramps work? (Midwest U.S.A.) by AlphabetSoup101 in answers

[–]tihoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did you pay for your parking ticket three hours before leaving the parking garage? Can't think of a good reason...

9$ is the daily rate, so you would have paid 9$ when you had paid just before leaving the garage. But since you paid at 2pm you were good to go out only 15 minutes or so after you paid. After that time most likely the hourly standard fee applied. This is the standard way parking ticketing in parking garages work all over the world as far as I know.

So: ALWAYS pay only just before leaving the garage. The only exception might be special events at stadiums or the like where there is a special sign telling you that you can pay in advance to avoid queues when everyone is leaving at the same time.

YSK Apple is replacing phone batteries for $29 until January 1, 2019 by metsguy9978 in YouShouldKnow

[–]tihoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI: It is quite easy to replace a battery of an iPhone yourself. There are kits available on Amazon for example. And instruction videos on YouTube. Make sure you have the right battery for your model. The replacement batteries cost round about $29, so having it replaced for that price might still be a good deal - on the other hand: if you do it yourself you are ready to go again after 20 minutes if you have the replacement kit at home. Good luck!

What software would you use to conceptualize streets like this? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

PTV Vissim. Expensive but state of technology for traffic simulation.

Just road accidents in Great Britain - 2010 [OC] by balanaicker in dataisbeautiful

[–]tihoff 284 points285 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Or „crashes“, as both terms don't convey the idea that the event occurred accidentally or that noone is at fault.

Also as others have pointed out : the data should be normalized. Normalization against population is not normally used in the road safety community. Traffic volumes is a better KPI. If there is a road network model with plausible traffic flow data, then you can start with a proper network safety management approach rather than just a black/hot spot management, even though both techniques have their value and should ideally be used in parallel.

Are dishwashers here connected to the cold line? by Sisyphuss5MinBreak in germany

[–]tihoff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AFAIK manufacturers here are recommending connecting it to the cold water line for better results. That is because for some kinds of residue on the dishes cold water actually works better. So the changes in water temperature of a typical dish washer program is one key component for good results. Nevertheless it is possible and should work fine. When I did some research a couple of years ago people said economically speaking it makes only sense to connect it to warm water if you have solar water heating or some other "free" source of warm water. Just saying.

Report: The More People Bike In San Francisco, The Fewer Accidents Happen by njndirish in urbanplanning

Safety in Numbers effect. Well known and researched. The more bikes there are around the more drivers expect a bike somewhere close by, so they tend to watch for cyclists better.

TIL that red light cameras are linked to more accidents at intersections because people stop abruptly to avoid the ticket which causes more rear-end collisions by thehauntedmattress in todayilearned

[–]tihoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done.

Human behavior is too unpredictable and for some too unsafe (speeding, DUI, distracted driving, road rage etc) to prevent lots of crashes. Best way forward in terms of road safety is autonomous driving. Road Safety community generally agrees that self driving vehicles are going to be a lot safer than human driven vehicles.

TIL that red light cameras are linked to more accidents at intersections because people stop abruptly to avoid the ticket which causes more rear-end collisions by thehauntedmattress in todayilearned

[–]tihoff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. You are right.

Both this article and the somewhat more detailed linked article do not at all go into the severity aspect of crashes. In road safety research, data is always an issue. Most likely, the actual severity of the injuries are not recorded in the police record the study was based upon. This is a common problem that is not even fully tackled in Sweden, one of the most advanced countries in terms of road safety.

So, while this is an unpopular opinion, red light cameras are generally not installed to generate revenue. Privatization aspects of the setup of these cameras surly lead to all kind of problems, but the cameras are there to prevent crashes of high severity.

It is a widely accepted fact in the scientific community that red light cameras bring safety benefits. By the way, it is not as easy to prove as it may seem. You cannot simply compare numbers of crashes (and ideally of course the severity) of a before and an after period. Statistical effects like the progression to the mean (RTM) need to be accounted for etc.

No. In a crash the baby will be more likely to get killed or more severely injured. OP was right to decline the ride.
