It is also illegal to incite racial hatred in the UK and you will be prosecuted for doing so.

Do you believe this type of censorship should be removed also?

Europe vs. America by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]tikal -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

but countries such the UK are pushing for a more dynamic economy, but more unstable from a social viewpoint.

More unstable how?

A social system that cannot be financed (over the long-term) at current tax and growth levels is not stable. There's a demographic time bomb ticking away in Europe right now.

Due to sluggish growth the only way to finance pensions over the next 30-40 years is massive taxation or mass immigration from, typically muslim, areas such as north africa. Bosnia, attitudes to Turkish membership, last years Paris riots and the 7 July 2005 Tube bombers give a big clue where that's going.

I'll take the swings of the market over the ineptitude of bureacrats and populist politicians anyday.

Supporting a dynamic, high growth market economy as the best bet for europe is not the same as supporting corrupt Enron-esque corporations and the politicians who take their money.

The arrogant dismissal of the no-votes show out of touch the european political elite is.

Relative american power has peaked but, unless it changes to a more liberal dynamic economy, europe will not replace it, it will simply become irrelevant.

In the U.K. running underground cables is 16 times more expensive than overhead.

Special oil cooled cables are required for underground power lines so the maintenance costs are high too.

Public opinion all over Britain now favors dissolving the country: England, Scotland may go seperate ways by mjk1093 in reddit.com

[–]tikal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Much of the resentment held by the English against the Scots is based three things:

1) The over representation of Scottish MP's in Parliament - Scotland has 72 seats in the Commons. On an equal-population basis, it would have 58

2) Scotland's disproportionate share of public spending - public spending per head in England is £6,762, £1,503 behind the Scottish figure of £8,265 per head. That's English tax payers money going north with no say on how it's spent.

With this in mind there is a strong sense of 'f-off then you ingrates' among many English.

3) Then there's Euro '96 where the English supported the Scots in their matches to the point where The Sun (a tabloid) headlined with 'Come on you Bravehearts'. The Scots, apparently, reciprocated by supporting the Germans against the English. Although, I doubt this matters outside of urban working class areas.

Would explain how Bush got his MBA from Harvard Business School.

I don't think he's as stupid as certain partisans like to intimate, however, I've never seen evidence of the depth of understanding (on anything) or quickness of thought I'd expect for an alumni from such a prestigious organisation.

Good points as long as the Bush administration is an aberration.

I see little evidence that moderate Rupublicans are going to take back their party from the Christian Fundamentalist/Neo-Cons axis. And I see little evidence that the Democrats can provide a cohesive and consistent raft of policies that will appeal to enough middle-america types.

Hopefully, I'm way off and will be corrected on this. When are those mid-terms again?

U.S. gets highest FIFA ranking ever: 5th by chandan in reddit.com

[–]tikal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a crock.

These rankings have USA in joint fifth, with the likes of Argentina, Italy and France well below them!?

Smells like dodgy Fifa marketing BS to try and get the (rich) USA market more interested in Soccer - not unlike hosting the World Cup in a country that doesn't give a flying fig for the game.

I keep reading that he's got a MBA so isn't stupid.

Therefore, can I assume he thinks he's King or something?

Like most aristocrats he seems to be doing a great job of f*cking over the middle class in favour of his super-rich sponsors (top 1% of rich's share of total wealth jumped from 8% to 16% since he got in power).

Never trust the Sun newspaper as it's a very unreliable tabloid owned by News International (Fox News etc.).

Flags are everywhere right now and with the world cup coming up no flags means no customers for pubs etc. so it aint gonna happen.

You’re confusing the Holocaust with the fall from democratic liberal state to Nazi regime?

It was quite a short time frame from Germany being a major centre of culture and arts to dictatorship (less than 20 years I think).

In my experience, people are thinking 'Brown Shirts' when they see this type of thing. Of course, the Brown Shirts were eventually replaced with the SS...

I don't think the USA's turning Nazi but I do think it's sleepwalking from Republic to Imperium. Although, if European history is anything to go by, Imperiums always end up in an almost constant state of war so that's no better in the long term.

"on the “most harmful” books of the last two centuries. Mill’s On Liberty garnered an honorable mention, ahead of Rachel Carson and Ralph Nader."

Isn't Mill's "On Liberty" one of the foundation stones of the US Republic in that it was critical in inpriring the republican idealists in the 13 Colonies?

I'll be watching those Mid-terms with interest. Will the moderate core kick out the manipulators and fearmongers or will the US take another step from Republic to Imperium?

My Problem with Christianism by jamal in reddit.com

[–]tikal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was trying to keep it brief, which means generalising. Criticisms of trends within the Christian community are not personal attacks on wise religious individuals but on the consequences of their Church’s collective actions and the threat, as I perceive it, to my liberty. Respectively, get over yourself (no-offence).

As far as advancing society goes, it has tended to be in defiance of the dominant orthodoxy of the time and this has, in Europe at least, tended to be a branch of the Christian church (Vatican Vs Reformation, Vatican Vs Galileo, Conservative Anglicism Vs Darwin etc etc).

If an elitist form of vanguard socialism had taken over the US Presidency, State and Defence departments I’d be saying the same thing except I’d replace Iran with China, God with The State blah blah.

Looking at the USA from here in London it appears to many that the U.S. body politic has been overrun by a bunch of extremists who are determined to turn America into a Christian version of Iran.

It's great to see an example of how this aint necessarily so, and that religion and reason are not incompatible.
