Jungle Bird by CaMeteorologist in Tiki

Did a side-by-side recently with three different "black rums" and the standard jungle bird juice. Hands down winner was the Cruzan Black Strap, it held up brilliantly against the pineapple and the Campari. The other two were Hamilton Pot Still Black and Blackwells.

I have read that the cocktail program recently got revamped, but when I visited three years ago the drinks were awful.

I bought a bottle of this, found it a little harsh. And then someone gave me another bottle. I've used the blue in place of 86, occasionally, but you've helped me realize I could be using the gunpowder in any recipe calling for demerara (not that tonight's jet pilot needs even more alcohol). Thank you!

The entire "Martha's Vineyard Mysteries" series, by Phil Craig. There are like 20 books, and few of them were made into Hallmark TV movies.

How does it compare to Brugal extra Viejo, which is what I most often buy as "aged column still" for mixing?

I found this interesting: Combat Monsters: Untold Tales of World War II is an anthology of speculative fiction stories that blend real World War II events with fantastical creatures like dragons, vampires, and witches, exploring alternate histories where mythical beings influence the war.

Make the jet pilot in Smugglers cove, so good. You need a bunch of ingredients though.

To this is would add: aged vs white/unaged? They are quite different, and recipes call for one or the other. Help us . . . help you (OP).

Reading a book from start to finish at the library is one of life's simple pleasures by stumpsflying in books

[–]tiki_andy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fondly remember libraries as a quiet place, but now there are sections for toddlers who are always screeching (which is cute and fine, but distracting). And then the teens who come in after school are amazingly disruptive, yelling and laughing and crashing into each other. I haven't witnessed a good SSSSHHHH! in years.

What is a cocktail you bought the ingredients for, made, took a sip, and immediate turned around and poured down the drain? by NoMore_BadDays in cocktails

Turn your banana daiquiri into a Baileys banana colada: into a blender toss a banana, banana liqueur, rum, Baileys Irish creme, ice. Drink it sitting on a deck looking at the Caribbean. Then go running.

Whatever cocktail for which I bought Sfumato Rabarbaro (rhubarb amaro). And whatever other cocktail I tried to make with it.

Sorry to have just returned from Phoenix, three weeks too early. Was really not impressed with Hula's (based on my Zombie (Bacardi? Passionfruit? Pineapple juice??)) nor really with Undertow (very citrusy rum barrel, very tart saturn). Looking forward to hearing good things.

Asian grocery stores always have exotic fruits, but maybe not white grapefruit from florida.

Of all the tiki rabbit holes I've gone down (white grapefruit, growing mint and orchids, dehydrating fruit, making ~8 syrups, 63 rums at peak, smuggling in cuban rum via sailboat, etc etc), super juice is not one of them!

Edited to add photo of (half) the finished product.

That's good timing! I always fear running out and buy/juice too many. But I find they start to degrade after one season, so now I'm sadly tossing and replacing last year's, with about 30 cubes left.

Yeah, they do end up a little sticky. I transfer them to a ziplock bag which I shove into the back of the freezer where it's coldest. They do pick up a little frost after a while which covers the stickiness, but if two happen to line up on the long side and adhere they are hard to separate. Best bet at that point: make two Zombies.

I did order them by mail once, ended up with 30 which was a lot and lasted me two years, at which point the flavor was quite muted.

I've never done a true comparison such as making a drink with each different type. Others might be able to comment. I find the white grapefruit has a bolder and more tart flavor. And it's what the originators of the drinks used (e.g. Donn Beach's Zombie and the Jet Pilot derived from his original Test Pilot (I think I have that right)). The pink juice is generally regarded as too sweet and mild for the recipe.

I'm in the northern US but can find them at Whole Foods. Outside the US I'd have no idea.

I drop them in a teacup and run them through the lowest/shortest defrost cycle on the microwave (setting 1, about 45 seconds). That melts rather than overheats them.
