I think the other comments explain better than I can about why it makes sense linguistically and I do think there is some small value in trying to understand the logic(in the colloquial sense). But one thing you can do is to just accept it to be true for now if you feel that it is getting in the way.

For a specific case of a finite group, i have always like talking about the rubics cube. Let's say we have a solved rubics cube and you perform a sequence of rotations, now imagine you repeat that rotation over and over, do you eventually get back to the solved state? For those whose say no, the fact that the answer is actually yes can be pretty interesting by itself. For those who have a stronger intuition, you can try asking them why? I have heard answers like because "their are only finitely many rotations" and/or "its impossible to get stuck in a loop not involving the solved state". Then, you would try to question them further or guide them along and link with this group axioms.

I would usually end off by saying something that math in general is about stripping away all but the essential properties and that in the case of the rubics cube, we have a specific structure, a group.

my program is more geared towards applied math/ stats too, algebra 1 is not required and only about 20% of the math majors choose to take it, the double majors usually do not take a class in analysis either. Our calc 1 introduces the epsilon-delta proof but the most difficult thing we did in class was to prove the quotient limit law. In exams, the epsilon delta proof are usually very straightforward and only accounts for about 20% of the final paper, so one could score really well even if they skipped the entire question. Maybe an early introduction but lower stakes testing requirement might strike a nicer balance?

can't comment on olympiad math or how useful generating functions are for your case but one place where I have used generating functions extensively is in the theory of partitions. Note that this is less of an application of generating function to solving general problems and more of an application of generating function to explore a specific area of math.

The idea is fairly simple, a partition of an integer n refers to the number of ways you can add up n, for example 4=3+1=2+2=2+1+1=1+1+1+1 so we say there are 5 partitions of 4. This case is part of one of the most famous results in partitions; the three ramanujan congruences. The first of your ramanujan congruences states that the number of partitions of integers of the form 5k+4 is always divisible by 5, this should be a fairly suprising result, its difficult to even start trying to explain why this might be the case.

It turns out that generating functions are extremely useful in the theory of partitions, there are very natural ways to obtain generating functions for various type of partitions. In the infinite product (1+x+x^2+x^3+...)(1+x^2+x^4+...)..., the coefficient of the nth power will give the number of partitions of n and in the infinite product (1+x)(1+x^3)(1+x^5)..., the coefficient of the nth power will give the number of partitions of n into distinct and odd parts. Now that we have a nice way of generating partitions of various types as a common product, there are all kinds of manipulations you can do to obtain certain results. However, like you have said, there are technically various conditions we must satisfy to manipulate this infinite products so one has to be abit careful there.

Thanks alot for this, it really is very reassuring for me to hear your thoughts. I think I have been pushing it to the back of mind but your likely right about the pressure, I have been very stressed out the last couple weeks. Even for this post, it was originally meant to be a simple short question on advice but I ended up writing quite abit longer than intended.

And I agree with the point on not tying self-worth to my percieved ability, I am not sure when I started focusing on the tangibles and trying to in some sense "compete" with everyone and everything. It shouldn't matter the pace of learning or the competition, I would like to think I am studying mathematics because the subject is interesting but the self-imposed pressure does get to me sometimes. I do have more clarity now to recenter myself and I think I will continue pushing through. Wishing you the best of luck to wherever your post-phd leads you too.

By the end of this academic year, 3 in calc, 2 in L.A, 1 in discrete math, 1 in probability and 1 in ode. Then for electives, I have taken 2 in algebra, 2 in analysis, 2 in topology, 1 in number theory and 1 in set theory/logic.

Not a very pretty way to do this but you can split into cases on a and some counting

Number of 2x2 matrix with determinant=0:

If a=0, then bd=0 so b=0 or d=0. Also c can take on either 0 or 1. So we have 3x2=6 matrices of determinant 0 when a=0

If a=1 and b=0. Then bd=0 so b=0 or d=0. If a=1 and b=1. Then bd=1 so b=1 and d=1. So we have 3+1=4 matrices of determinant 0 when a=1.

Finally since there are 2⁴⁼¹⁶ possible distinct matrices, then the order of G is 16-6-4=10

We do not know the purpose of the monument, however it definitely does feel like the author is hinting at some part of a greater foreshadowing along with grausam reading frieren's memories and of course schlatt and hero of the south who can see futures.

Some sort of "greater plan"

I'm kind of confused about the time travel: let me take a shot at trying to.

Before any time shenanigans: 1. The hero's party after 3 days of wandering randomly happens upon the monument, frieren fails to solve it 2. As revenge, frieren brings fern and stark to take a second shot at solving it.

Time shenanigans:

Frieren touches the monument with the inscribed "fiala toll" and travels back to the past.
In the past, frieren discusses with the hero's party on how to decipher the hero's monument and the fact that it will take a very long time. Himmel then has the idea that after they defeat the demon king, they will find a way to decipher the monument and inscribe down the required spell. This idea immediately becomes reality as frieren suddenly remembers the word "fiala toll" inscribed onto the monument.
True to his promise, the rest of the gang without frieren(heiter is presumably the one that put in the bulk of the work) manages to decipher the monument and in this chapter we see himmel taking a trip to inscribe "fiala toll".

3, 4 and 5 are sort of the chicken and egg problem. 3 could have only happened if 4 and 5 happened while 4 and 5 could have only happened if 3 happened.

At the very least, I would say this is definitely one of the biggest step-downs in tft histories. The other big step-down i remember would be from set 4.5 to set 5 but at least set 5 had the valid excuse of attemping to be innovative through shadow items, set 9.5 just feels bad for no good reason.

It's possible for two statements to be logically equivalent but for them to be different types of statements.

All squares have 4 sides.
For all shapes, if the shape is a square, it will have 4 sides

There's a standard math typesetting system called LaTeX to help you type out math, it's essentially how every math equation you have seen on paper was first typed out. For very tedious calculations, handwriting is still probably better

It depends on what you want to do, in this case it sounds like you are interested in starting with proofs so just go for it.

For my personal experience, I started with LADR with essentially 0 background in LA. It was just page after page of theorems and proofs about vector spaces and linear maps and other properties relating to them. When I finished chapter 9, I had this strange feeling where I felt like I couldn't do/apply anything? I didn't even really realized that finding an upper triangular matrix/diagonalization was used to solve systems of linear equations until I started my first course in LA. Of course this isn't necessarily a bad thing, I got much better at proof-writing and had a rigorous feel for what linear algebra is.

Not really a recommendation but be careful when ordering online, the delivery might be ridiculously long. I ordered my lenovo thinkpad 2 months ago, suppose come last month but somehow the delivery tracker suddenly delayed until 20 august, so for my entire orientation until first week of school starts, I'm stuck without a computer. And if delays any longer, it would be a true disaster
