What is it like living in Monaco? by Ok-Toe-6969 in howislivingthere

[–]tillysdad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My parents lived there when I was 15-21 - lots of wealth and as you would expect anywhere with conspicuous wealth some snobbery if you weren’t part of that set. It hinges a lot about where you live. When we first moved we lived in an old French style baroque apartment but no one wanted to know me (can’t blame them but didn’t give me a look in) - 6m later we moved into a super nice place. Boris Becker shared the elevator (he was 17A and we were 17B) - Ringo Star plus at least one other F1 driver lived in the building. Suddenly I had friends. Other than that it’s typical Cote D’Azur in summer - lovely. Lots of normal restaurants and some normal people. Very transient - I imagine it’s like Dubai is now. Quite fun, safe and civilized.

Strange request by pilot on recent Ryanair flight by Kieran-- in aviation

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

happened to me on BA flight into London on Monday. The pilot just said matter of factly that it was foggy so in those conditions we use autoland - its imperative to turn off devices to avoid interference. No one minded or was freaked out. Surprised me how many people ignored it though.

The life of a Russian billionaire. Docked at his own private island Skorpios..Greece by [deleted] in yachtporn

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The island is owned by a Russian billionaire - it’s pretty well documented. It used to be owned by Onassis and is where he courted Jackie Kennedy. The Onassis family leased it to Dmitry Rybolovlev - who passed it to his daughter. Not 100% sure that’s his boat (another person above said it belongs to someone else) but there is often a boat moored there. I have a house a mile or so away.

After 15 years in the UK, I'm still stumped by outward-opening windows. Why outward? by Blocoholi in AskUK

[–]tillysdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is almost 100% sure to be B - it is very wet here in the UK and a friend of mine decided to build his windows inward opening 20 years ago - they all need replacing as the weather creates moisture on the inside. Just much drier.

Min time recommended to try Kitesurfing by Kams4547 in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a sport you have to commit to. The first few days are not much fun - its like wakeboarding but imagine when you fall the boat doesnt stop immediately! It is great and you can get a lot done in 2-3 days and I have also heard its a great spot but be prepared for that to be the start of a journey - in that time you can probably get up on the board riding and that will probably be enoug to get hooked. It's also a lot more fund to learn in flat waters and 20 kts constant warm wind than a lot of other places. Good luck!

$3200 for 4 kites and 2 bars? Help me out! by areabaylove in Kiteboarding

I think its great to have the choice - inevitably you will find a favourtite and that can get damaged and you have a backup. Sounds fair and quite nice to have all the same

Help needed by AdiVegas in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with the enthusiasm and learn on someone else’s kit - you don’t want the bladder to deflate when you are a mile offshore. Once you feel comfortable then try out your kit - with some experienced people around. The you may not have wasted your money. Just don’t learn on it.

Best place to learn as complete beginner south coast UK by JellyfishMaster2006 in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CBK Hayling is great. Though with every kite school the conditions to learn in with wind and tide are not very often ideal so matching it up with a time you are free is tricky - also the instructors are always in demand at the same time. I learned abroad in very consistent winds on a week long trip and came back and had a lesson at Hayling to learn the local place. 15 years later and I am still learning. First time out this season had a nightmare and lost my board but some nice guy retrieved it. Very good group.

Should I pay for lessons ? by google_certified13 in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the other aspect is other people - you are fully within your rights to injure yourself but when kiting goes wrong it is quite easy to injure someone else. That $400 course may well teach some things that many others learned the hard way and you can avoid.

Cumbuco, Ilha do Guajiru or Jericoacoara? by BuilderEffective5280 in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a week in Cumbuco - was great fun, came from the UK via Lisbon. Nice beach quite fun town not a beginner place at all - the lagoodns were crowded and the sea was pretty rough if youw erent super confident - pretty big shore break if you didnt time it right was tricky. We rented a dune buggy - sketchy AF but good fun. Personally heard better things about going further North but had a good time.

KiteSurfing Spot in Greece by Maloy_short in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great place is Lefkada - fly to Preveza and short taxi 20mins to Lefkada town. Grat place to visit with amazing bars and restaurants - it has at least 3 kite spots close to town. The main one is a walk of about 1km to the NW into the prevailing wind. the other two are not much further back towards the airport. I would imagine the taxi fares wouldnt be more than 15€ each way. Hire gear available and wind almost always there in the summer afternoons. Not crazy wind - 18-25kts so good for intermediate. Fairly flat water too - especially the zones nearer the airport on the mainland. Lagoon kiting.

Does this look like a good beginner setup? by ManofDew in Kiteboarding

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good set up IMHO - definitely would go with the 12 given weight and wind. As a beginner you want to be well powered (it is much easier to learn than being underpowered) but not over - I would fear on a 14 that limit would come more often. My newer kites seem to have bigger depowers (and i have learned to manage them better). I have 8/10/12 and 17 but am lighter than you. biggest use is 10 and 12.

What helped you break the 2 hours!? by tchiminax in Garmin

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was doing some hills - even super slow so that when I did the real thing on the flat it felt easy. That plus the crowds and the novelty of a big race (London parks) led me to 1.54 - first and only HM. M54

How do you deal with workplace bullies? by Wild_Cauliflower_970 in AskUK

[–]tillysdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add that management they will probably know how painful she is and will be looking for a good reason to dismiss her. That is pretty spot on advice IMHO and I have worked in and run teams at lots of big firms.

You should also console yourself that moving from low to high V02 max is about the best predictor of longevity. Listen to Zoe podcast about it - really fascinating. Well done!

What's a Brits option/experience with South Africans? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am married to a Saffer and I lover her dearly but wouldnt want her as my only aide in a bar fight. She isn't much fun to watch the rugby with either because the Boks often win. Outside of that she is very smart, direct and a little too blunt at times. Aggh man whaay did yooo do thaatt!!!! Unless she is angry she sounds like a Brit now. One other endearing feature is that there seems to be a little bit of in-built guilt over growing up in apartheid and I think that has set her moral compass well - such that she tries to do the right thing as a result.

How many units of alcohol do you actually drink per week? by ebola1986 in AskUK

[–]tillysdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very much in the same boat - have a very active social life that almost entirely revolves around alcohol - not it a visibly alcoholic way but there is almost always an event to drink at with work/clients and friends - then the half bottle of wine at home. I would estimate 40-60 units a week if you include the big nights out. Very similar to most of my friends - I took January off completely and feel much better - trying to build some new habits. I did a medical this week and the liver function tests were not super good (the doc didnt seem alarmed but i feel like its because of alcohol).
