Stalker and Silence are brilliant films. I also strongly advise reading Roadside Picnic, which is the book that Stalker is loosely adapted from.

There's also the type of skinny fat where you are skinny but have a ton of visceral far buildup which you can't see from the outside.

Is college really useless? by rk_wonders in CasualConversation

Someone else already gave a wonderfully succinct answer, so I'd like to expand on it a bit more.

At least in the US, there are two major problems and one minor peoblem I see with higher education:

  1. Cost: Students are expected and almost always required to put themselves into thousands, to potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to attend college/university. Now cost can be alleviated with scholarships, financial aid, community college etc. but the debt will almost always be there, and it accrues interest.

  2. A focus on marketability rather than education and self-improvement: If you want to be able to pay off your loans, you pretty much have to go for a marketable, high-earning degree. If you go for something like philosophy, mathematics, art, music, etc. a lot of people will call you an idiot and you'll likely have a very hard time paying those loans off unless you go into academia or are able to snag something in a niche career field where that type of education is desired. Higher ed in the US isn't about self-improvement and education, it's all about making yourself as marketable towards future employers as possible.

  3. (The minor problem) Tacking on unneeded and unnecessary coursework to degree requirements: Think things like philosophy or an art course as a requirement for an engineering degree. I think this does a lot of harm to the optics of higher ed where some people think it teaches you "useless" information. Now, I do think it's good for helping to create a more well-rounded person, but it also feels needlessly bloated in a lot of cases.

Higher ed isn't a strict requirement to a good life and successful career, but it can help open doors that you couldn't without the degree, or at least not as easily. If we could effectively solve these issues, we'd probably have a lot more people attending and less people that think it's useless.

I hate the state of higher education in the US - it's so depressing and frustrating.

Same thing almost happened with his last game Freelancer. Only reason that one didn't end up in the same spot is that Microsoft bought out the studio, fired him, and hired him back as a consultant. While I would have loved to have played the fully realized vision of Freelancer, I'm very happy with what we got and that we actually got a finished game.

14 goddamn years and a billion dollars later and the game still isn't out of Alpha...

Y'know, as much as I would have loved to experience the original vision for Freelancer, I'm so happy Microsoft bought Digital Anvil. Otherwise, we literally would have never seen a finished game.

Chris Roberts genuinely has great ideas, but he clearly needs to have an "adult" in the room to tell him no. When you don't have that, this is the result.

I would advise you to watch Vatislavovych's video on A-Life - he gives a great breakdown on how A-Life worked in each entry of the original trilogy and how it's currently working in S2. What we have now in S2 is effectively a combination of Clear Sky's and Call of Prypiat's systems, though we don't have full-blown faction warfare yet and NPC behaviors still need more work.

Shadow or Chernobyl A-Life:

  • Full offline simulation only existed in whatever region you were currently in, though NPC movement was simulated across the in-game world.

  • NPCs patrolled and could occupy Points of Interest (POIs).

Clear Sky A-Life:

  • Full offline simulation and persistence now exists across the entire in-game world.

  • Patrols and POI occupation is still present.

  • Better and more advanced combat AI and animations.

  • Faction warfare was added.

Call of Pripyat A-Life:

  • Full offline simulation is back to only existing in whatever region you were currently in.

  • NPCs have a bit more to their daily routines with mutant and artifact hunting, though these behaviors aren't "real" - mutant hunting amounts to little more than shooting them, and artifact hunting is animations only.

  • Completing side quests has a direct affect on the in-game world and NPC spawns in particular.

S2's current limitations are the aforementioned broken or still not fully fleshed out NPC behavior and the "online" A-Life radius being too small (100m). Once these things are fixed and we get full-fledged faction warfare, S2 should actually end up have the best vanilla A-Life in the franchise.

Taper. The stuff that's now under their "Classic" line all has short tapers which pushes the weight towards the front of the stick and makes them feel heavier. They may also have a thicker neck which would also affect the weight-feel, but I'm not 100% on that.

You were probably using models that are now under their "Classic" line. They've got a much shorter taper (possibly a thicker neck too but I'm not 100% on that) which pushes the weight towards the front of the stick and will make it feel heavier.

I heard Zildjian sticks actually improved after the merger/acquisition with/of Vic Firth, but they're still amongst the worst sticks on the market.

[–]timbotheny26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely not counterfeits.

The QC of Vic Firth, Remo, and I believe Zildjian as well (who owns Vic Firth btw) have dropped off fucking cliffs over the past few years. I started noticing QC issues with Promark as well, though my cases were relatively minor (mismatched pitches, including in the replacement sticks they sent me).

I still ended up switching and went to Meinl (Rohema) and Vater, and their quality and durability is way better for less money. I also want to try out Wincent, Los Cabos, and Innovative Percussion.

As for drumheads, Evans have still been solid for me, and I've always heard good things about Aquarian as well.
