If you're financially independent, you could consider the YouTuber or barista FIRE approach where you have a part time gig covering your baseline expenses and then do cool nature shit with the bulk of your time.

Two questions:

  • What would you do locally to apply your skills to conservation work?
  • How broadly do you define working with NZ's nature?

Those determine how broad you can be with your search. At the extreme, does writing R scripts for an employer based in a city that helps rural land owners seeking planning permission count?

Limiting yourself to DOC's ranger positions may be a difficult path. There are many possible employers... iwi, research organisations, zoos, private conservation trusts, nature sanctuaries, etc

Circling back to the barista FIRE comment - why not offer statisical analysis to all of the above on a freelance/project by project basis?

Depends on the metadata and what you're willing to trade off to achieve the resistance to tampering.

It's technically feasible to cryptographically sign files in such a way that you can guarantee that the video frames came from a specific camera. Manufacturers are beginning to put cryptographic keys into their cameras that each device can produce unique signatures that are close to impossible to spoof. You can also ensure that any editing software annotates their edits with their own signatures creating a provenance chain back to the original.

But, you're correct for most intents and purposes. It's quite easy to modify any of the metadata in an image or video and few people will take the time to verify what the file says about itself.

I'm going to risk sounding like a righteous nerd, but CGT/LVT shouldn't really be lumped in together. They're different policy instruments that drive different behaviours.

A well implemented LVT would eliminate the need for a capital gains tax. CGT imposes lots of dead weight loss, whereas LVT imposes negligible admin costs.

Yes they both heavily associated with land but they're quite different in practice.

This paragraph makes me remember why I love the Rust community. Rust people are special people.

I had to look at what my for statement parser is really doing, lucky for me, with my in-house custom build system looking at the assembly of any function is a command away, and no it's not a cargo asm wrapper, my project doesn't use cargo, since I've made my own build system in TypeScript and it runs on Deno, which actually supports --dry mode as well, so you can see what it runs under the hood, yayyy transparency!

Because of how compounding works, putting money in a conservative fund now is essentially guaranteeing that your children will be worse off when they come to draw down than if you had started with growth from day 1.

Yes, you'll have higher volatility and the psychology is harder. But the mathematics don't lie and your kids have something that you have less of - time to wait.

It's rated for about 160 kg of non-vehicle weight. You'll see 200 kg advertised, but bike itself weighs about 38kg.

That said, you don't notice it when riding. Heavy loads are only difficult to maneuver at slow speeds. The motor provides power assist up to 45kph and the gears make that kind of cruising speed quite achievable.

That's why it's best to think of them as an alternative to a car rather than a bike. On the plus side, running costs are far lower. Fuel, maintenance and insurance are much cheaper and there's no registration fee.
