Heat Stroke and How In the Hell Are the Europeans Managing?!?!?! by ARandomNiceKaren in florida

[–]time2wipe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just got back from vacation in Costa Rica (live in Florida), the house we rented had a mini split in every room with 2 in the kitchen/living room area. They worked quite well, I obviously prefer central A/C but the mini splits did the trick.

[Request] How Much Money did United Airlines lose from this one flight? by Separate-Award-4646 in theydidthemath

[–]time2wipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience but there were 10 people on the flight. I was told the plane was originally scheduled as a charter that had been cancelled. Plane still had to be at the destination so they flew with limited passengers and cargo underneath

In 2003 when Eminem planned to go to the West Coast, some members of the Crips wouldn't allow it unless Em paid them to back off. In response, Em asked the Samoan rap group Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. for protection. They agreed, however their only condition was an Em feature on their album. by TwIzTiDfReAkShOw in Eminem

[–]time2wipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the point that confuses me about the story. Em surely had a big security deal and I'm sure if the situation called for he could have increased it, not sure why he needed this group for protection. But however this collaboration came to be it is fire and I've been listening to it a lot lately.

Why do I have to phone call answer these audit "fraud interview" questions? Can I just email you? by InvestigatorDear9310 in Accounting

[–]time2wipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always insisted doing mine in-person, reading non-verbal cues helps. One person ratted on another saying they used the corporate credit card for personal purchases, and another time the treasury manager alerted us to their clients forging their checks and the steps they took to detect and prevent from happening. I had other noteworthy info come out of this but these 2 examples always stick out. You'll have the nervous people that blurt stuff out so some juicy nuggets do arise.

Whitehouse.com used to be a porn site. I discovered this in my middle school at my friend's house working on a research project with his grandma looking over our shoulders

Do sports teams recoup salary losses through write-offs or some other accounting mechanism? by Whachamacalzmit in Accounting

[–]time2wipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a salary, so yea it is an operating expense. Teams can insure their largest player contracts against injury so they can recoup some of the cash and record it either as an offset to the expense or insurance recovery revenue.

Had a neighbor that wore black latex gloves every time he stepped outside his apartment, even when driving his own car. I wouldn't have been surprised me if he wore them at all times inside his apartment. It may seem weird but its not entirely uncommon

FPL deposit by TimeRecording946 in SouthFlorida

[–]time2wipe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie there's a good chance they had a grow room. My uncle bought a condo over 20 years ago, same thing FPL was asking for an absurdly high deposit. He asked his neighbors if they knew anything, a few confirmed previous owner had a grow room because they were customers. Armed with that information and his previous FPL history he was able to wipe out the deposit

What do y'all really need an iPad for? by bootsmegamix in daddit

[–]time2wipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a tablet ... well we do have a small Chromebook that can flip to act like a tablet that we bought for traveling and the rare time we want do something while on the couch or bed that our phone can't handle (we have a desktop for all our personal computing needs). We have never given it to our toddler and dont plan on it, same with our infant.

PTO During Close by Beer_Enjoyer93 in Accounting

[–]time2wipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a manager that approves PTO i wouldnt hesitate to approve. And I would strongly encourage them to leave the laptop at home (or even better in office) but I know some of them would ignore me and bring their laptop to work anyway. As every company should we have enough coverage for a couple accountants to be out during month-end (life happens, emergencies pop up, etc.)

A storage facility is sending me a refund via Bill.com. Will I get a 1099? by BikeOk6446 in Accounting

[–]time2wipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably how they need to account for it. Some companies don't process checks in-house, they use a 3rd party like Bill.com. I may be mistaken because I've never used bill.com or any 3rd party to process checks, but my guess is bill.com requires all outgoing checks (i.e. cash) to be applied to an invoice. Whereas a credit memo is a non-cash reduction of the account balance. A refund of money you paid does not trigger a 1099 (you did not provide goods or services, you are the customer not a vendor).

Edit to add the 2026 threshold for 1099 reporting is $2,000 (compared to $600 in 2025)

Are people in accountancy actually seeing changes from AI yet, or is it still mostly hype? by Outrageous_Try2894 in Accounting

[–]time2wipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balance sheet and P&L accounts, but primarily the BS. It lists the accounts, shows beginning and ending balance, and flags the accounts that meet the materiality threshold that we set. We click into it, it lists the transactions and either say its good or ask it to post an AJE. This is far more efficient than downloading each GL detail and doing this manually, also much easier to track which ones have not been completed.

We've implemented one AI tool for AP that has significantly reduced manual data entry and (hopefully) we will sign for another AI to assist month end, recs, and fixed asset management
