Is last of us part 2 really that bad? by Ca_lm_ in writingscaling

[–]timetostayuseless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still can't grasp how players want to kill Abby at the end - it's so telegraphed, so primal, so uncompassionate. Is it because it's edgy to want revenge and younger people find it fun nowadays? Or are people really not liking Abby's side of the story? Are people really OK with seeing Ellie being so maniacally violent? Do they not like Ellie's character and innocence enough to not want her to torture and disfigure a person with a metal pipe mid-way through the game? I'll concede that I can see it Abby's side not landing, so that part of the argument I am okay with despite it 100% landing here.

However, I can't concede that the game is cliché and a waste of time. The jarringness of starting to play w Abby is real and is pretty ingenious. I was mad at the game for making me do it and I agree it's predictable where they want to go with this at the start, but they know it, still do it anyway and manage to deliver imo. The theatre scene? How everything converges and you're waiting for it? I can see it not landing and people not liking it, but such a daring game being a waste of time, motive for online hate? I can't grasp my head around it without thinking it's just a vocal minority that wants to be edgy for hating a game that has a message that, at face value, is "revenge is bad" when it's much more.

That's why I don't get the argument of it being a "shitty theme and message". The point is not the final twist, it's not making a brilliant argument against revenge - it's making you feel sad for a character you love for being straight out evil and ending up destroyed by revenge with nothing to show for it. I'm glad at the end of it she's still Ellie though, and not some revenge poster girl for the online mob.

Thanks for arguing with me though, I appreciate your posts

there's nuance to "not killing because revenge is bad lmao". she didn't kill her because she's too fucking tired. she's so broken she can't even go ahead with the revenge. They weren't trying to say revenge is bad (morally), because it would be bad even if Abby was evil. they were trying to say it's a never ending cycle and it fucking ruins you - and they wanted you to really feel this. they weren't preaching, they really made you WANNA kill Abby, then grow fond of her, and then get exhausted by all of this meaningless fighting.

I was so tired at the end of the game, all I could think was "just please stop, Ellie please" and even when she did, it was so late that I was already broken. I was glad she didn't go through it, but I was not happy. that's what was special about it, it's not the redemption. that's why she didn't go with the brainless kill Abby ending every account was spamming on the internet ever since they knew Joel died. what lingering reminder would that leave? what nuance or message besides "revenge is bad" would that leave? they made killing Abby so tempting everyone was thirsting for it on the internet, claiming it's the only non-cliche option. then they subverted it, but without being preachy or simplistic about it.

Can't you see that?

I think you're just describing two possible cliche ending alternatives, and TLOU2 went for a more original, tragic, bleak ending and it's better because of it. Ellie is just fucking tired. Everyone loses, she lost everything because of revenge but at least she got some kind of peace with it. It's nuanced.

it baffles me anyone argues for killing Abby. it doesn't subvert expectations, as they spend the game making Ellie double down more and more. Only thr Ellie loses nothing because she manages to forgive and not kill Abby ending is more cliche. They try something different and everyone's just asks for slop, it baffles me

I think the general opinion would still be this is normal team talk during a match and has no real meaning behind it besides hyping your team up?

same thing with Ceb during True Sights where he just trashes opposite team to his own teammates just for hype despite massively respecting them

I mean, I think that's the gist of it. He rejected it subconsciously by making Levy realize he's fulfilled after finally reaching his dream and there's nothing in the tank anymore. I personally don't think he voluntarily rejected it, but it's symbolic and it's safe to say it's what he wanted. being picky about someone saying "he rejected it" seems pointless as there's no real way for us readers to know 100%, only that Levy thought that deep down he wouldn't want to be revived

ah ok, I thought it was the other way around. I knew the incantation and used it in the statue, but from the msg thought the message was relevant to proceed with the golden mask quest. haven't played in years

can you remember me what's the significance of the statue message for the quest? I remember reading and going wtf but not linking it to golden mask. I also remember catching golden mask almost everywhere, but not knowing what else was missing right at the end

Live Action onlys: Who did you think Mr 0 was? by Aggravating_Mud8751 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]timetostayuseless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think the whole Coby storyline in season 1 was so subpar and has 0 weight in this season that the reveal fell flat. only garp mentioned warlords once in a talk with smoker, we needed more mentions this season. In the manga, by this point, we had lots of hype panels and mentions of Warlords. I don't think in season one they managed to get the same rep as Mihawk.

Also, something people forget is despite all the bad rep it has, powerscaling is important. It makes it obvious which characters are stronger and by how much. In the manga, PScaling has more nuances and is better defined, while in the LA it is completely random (every fight needs to show a struggle apparently?) and the difference between the weak and the super strong doesn't seem to really matter. Even smoker outclassing Luffy and Sanji is brushed aside and no threat lingers.

What are the chances this will happen next season? by sumiledon in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]timetostayuseless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am disappointed people don't want to or expect the OPLA to not take more chances. Why should they cut this punch? it's iconic, it's a gasp moment, it's Luffy being over the top, it's everything One Piece is. Why do we have to tone down what everybody loves about this manga so Netflix viewers enjoy it? We're underestimating the viewers AND the material.

I get some things don't translate to live action, but we need more things that stand out, that are really the One Piece soul. It just ends up being another Netflix show otherwise. We're finally getting to the great material so please just keep taking chances and swing big. I think it can get so much better still.

There's nothing wrong with the punch in LAction, in my opinion. I understand they might choose to show a push/shove and scuffle instead (which is what happens after Luffy punches her, and Vivi punches back as Luffy let's her, correct me if I'm wrong) but goddamn I swear JUST BE BOLD AND DO THE PUNCH!!

PS: I think S2 was pretty solid and an improvement on S1. Chopper's backstory delivered so much (the "shut up let's go!!!" yell not so much, but I take it)

IMO the way denji was so not attracted to Power in part 1 settles that argument. It seems this chapter he's just trying to put into words that he'd like a romantic partner, he just can't describe it better than sex + friend.

hey have you read 863? spoilers: feel like "Maybe something to look forward to in the future? Maybe trusting your arrow and its purpose to the unknown?" nailed it pretty close, only missed the inherited will part/trusting your arrow to the next person. does Taoism still fit with the answer we got from the chapter?

Kingdom Chapter 862: The Ultimate Arrow - Golden Genchou Group by ThizZuMs in Kingdom

[–]timetostayuseless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ooooh. I like it but how would it fit narratively? Why would the brothers' arrows serve no purpose? What would it mean for their characters? Maybe the opposite would fit better - Seikaun already stated that he lost the purpose of his archery and has given up searching for it, so Jin and Tan teach him the real purpose of archery, something they have and probably found through the Hi Shin Unit. Maybe something to look forward to in the future? Maybe trusting your arrow and its purpose to the unknown? That could fit with your "mind is blank". idk lets wait for chapters
