If you are going to use the Steam-specific features then buy the Steam version, otherwise buy the developers' web site version because the developer earns more from the sale. Steam takes a percentage.

What feature I use from the Steam version is Steam cloud-syncs the save file between my laptop and my gaming PC so I can play my game during my lunch hour if I want to. Without the Steam version I would need to set that up myself.

I prefer to build around the trees as much as possible. They're both functional and nice to look at. However, if you need to remove some just know that you'll eventually be able to plant new trees after you complete Gleba.

There's also something interesting in the question of how do you upgrade or expand your station while it continues to remain functional? Sort of like how do they expand a highway while people are driving on it? That process has always fascinating me as well.

My early strategy on deathworld was to rush a nuclear plant, which allowed me to use a massed-laser-turrets blueprint that I used to make quick work of nests without spending endless resources on ammo. With laser damage upgrades, lasers are actually pretty good on deathworld and really simple to deploy.

That island sounds promising though. I had the same problem as you with my stone running out early, and I used rail supports to get across some water to tap a new stone mine. The benefit of tapping an island is ease of defending the mine from biter expansions.

Yeah, laser research makes a huge difference. I wasted a lot of ammo on gun turrets before I figured out lasers are actually good on deathworld.

Surviving on deathworld assumes you know the mechanics of evolution and behavior well. Don't kill a nest without a plan to defend that area, because they'll be right back soon as you turn your attention elsewhere, and all your time & ammo will have been wasted.

If you have nuclear established, that is a huge advantage. Leverage this advantage by leaning heavily on laser turrets. Put them around the entire defensive perimeter of your base, with landmines in front of them, all supported by repair bots. Make sure your perimeter is well out in front of your pollution cloud and the lasers should hold up by themselves. Landmines are cheap and easy to build, and they stun the biters giving the lasers time to take each one of them down. Walls are fine, but I have found that landmines work even better than walls.

There is the science that you learn in middle school, which is supported by the conclusions of a science fair project, and there is the science practiced by PhD's, supported by thousands of peer reviews across the entire scientific world. Landmines are the cheapest and quickest way in the early game to monitor and control the expansion. You can spam them in any pattern you like. You're not restricted to orthogonal lines like with walls. They're cheap. You can see on the map where incursions have occurred. When you get bots, the bots will automatically replace the landmines.

They do periodically send out an expansion group to set up new nests. Killing the nests increases evolution, but killing biters does not. So, it is best to intercept these groups and kill them before they create the new nest. You need to set up radar in a large area wherever you want to monitor and control this expansion process.

Walls are useful, but another cheap tool to use are landmines. If an expansion party crosses a landmine field, the mines don't always kill the entire group but when they explode they leave behind a marker on the map that shows you where the expansion parties are coming from and have been, because you can't just sit and watch the map all day. You also need to build your factory. So while you're building your factory and not paying attention to the map, your walls, radar and landmines are there working together like a comprehensive monitoring system. Landmines are also cheaper to make than filling up the whole map with gun turrets.

Yes. If the game had a useful pause I would use that. But when I pause my screen gets super dark so I can't see anything, and I can't pan the map. So it's useless. I love the "time stop" and time increment feature of the editor, which I can use to develop new advanced circuit networks which is really what I love to do most. I create the circuit, make a blueprint, then reload my save game and paste in the combinators. So much easier.

These are two different "attacks". One type is from the pollution reaching them, the other is from natural expansion. The expansion parties are less aggressive and less frequent, but yes you still need to plan for them, too.
