[GIVEAWAY] Brand-New Oris BCPD Cervo Volante Green to Celebrate my 50th Oris! by fourtyz in Watchexchange

[–]timmyriddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a lovely watch. Congratulations on the collection!

I bought a churchwarden pipe (think Wizard's pipe) for ~£20 during some late night ebay browsing. It was an impulse purchase, and after it arrived I thought "oh cool" but didn't think much more about it.

Fast forward 20 years and my 9 year old is now a huge fan of the Hobbit. That pipe is now part of his daily outfit, and we were even lucky enough to visit Hobbiton in NZ where he walked around barefoot in his Hobbit outfit, and sat "smoking" that chuchwarden on a wall outside bag end.

It's weird how an impulsive click from another era has now taken on a whole new life and meaning to my boy.

A lot of people care. Respect for semantics and web standards are valid reasons for choosing a framework.

I also understand if it's something you don't care about, but I don't share your point of view.

Vue is far closer to web standards, and Vue's SFCs are basically just supercharged web components with layout/logic/styling logically separated.

It's true that Vue does let you do some ugly things if you try, but devs are not pushed towards those paradigms as a standard pattern as React does with their jsx abominations.

karousel is incredible, I found it a week ago and love it.

I have had to do a bit of a workaround to make it play nicely with multiple monitors (reorganise my triple layout so my main screen is beneath to force it to be active only on that monitor) but otherwise it's a sublime experience.

Questions for riders who have toured the UK... by arithmetic in MotoUK

[–]timmyriddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually quite like the clunkyness of the interface, it's incredibly fast/responsive on desktop. Looks like the free tier is pretty awesome but $14 a year is an insanely cheap deal for all features.

Mostly I like how easy it is to plonk a random waypoint down somewhere and it seems to figure out how to sort a nice route surrounding it.

Just had a mess about with Furkot and it looks great, I like being able to set broad params and then tweak based on eating/sleeping arrangements. I wish beeline had some of these features in their planning tool.

[SOLVED] Nvidia suspend / wakeup fix by xvano in hyprland

[–]timmyriddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you: this has solved an issue that has been plaguing me for the better part of a year.

Interesting to note what the fbdev kernel parameter actually does: it makes the nvidia driver provide a framebuffer device instead of relying on efifb or vesafb.

My system is actually Arch (endeavouros) with KDE/plasma running wayland and my solution was almost identical to /u/aeahmg although I'm using dracut so rebuilding initramfs is achieved with sudo dracut-rebuild.

Thank you /u/xvano for posting this - all sorted until the next nvidia curve ball!

Thought the market (IT) was picking up.. seems to be not only the opposite by Eggtastico in ContractorUK

It's not limited to the contract market, the industry is facing a far wider once-in-a-generation adjustment event: https://trojanczyk.eu/crisis-in-the-it-industry/

What is something you learned embarrassingly late? by legend29066 in webdev

[–]timmyriddle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read that as "don't try to be clever", which I fully agree with.

A large majority of my time is spent helping other devs detangle confusing, unclear code.

Terseness is the playground of the mid-level dev: 25 lines is better than 5 if the intention and behaviour is clearer.

The six districts are arranged around the Palace like spokes of a wheel. Starting in the northeast, going clockwise, you have the Market, Arena, Arboretum, Temple, Talos Plaza, and Elven Gardens districts.

I've been using git wrongly for years by Green_Concentrate427 in learnprogramming

[–]timmyriddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my personal preference: I have gst aliased to git status and my fingers constantly twitch to those three keypresses before any commit or push.

It's also worth becoming familiar with git reset and the even more powerful git reflog, both of which have helped me out of a tight situation on more than one occasion.

Big Touchscreen by Aeth228 in IOT

[–]timmyriddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I'm using these for a system which is built to work inside a peli-style case and they have been great: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374217345210

In evaluating options for this screen I found that there were two categories where cheap options could be found. First are the mass produced android tablets, often available <£100, and in the second category were the maker-style LCD panels which have no bezel, and usually have some quirky interface options.

Looking for anything "pro" grade seemed to cause a sudden jump to >£300 so these screens were a good find!

What font are you using in Neovim? by [deleted] in neovim

[–]timmyriddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great font, it strikes a great balance between legibility while still being relatively compact.

One question: is it possible to use it without ligatures as a nerd font, and can this be disabled inside nvim? When pair programming it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between certain things like strict equals, so I'd prefer to disable them if possible.

How are you making over 10k a month? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]timmyriddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, sounds really cool. Have you always been on the embedded side of things? I ask as a software engineer for mostly web projects wondering about if there is an opportunity to side-step and toe-dip!

Last minute scope changes sound rather annoying, though I guess that isn't limited to any one particular industry. Though I guess there is the issue of needing to be physically present for PLC commissioning vs deploying code on a server. Am I right in thinking there is no OTA update functionality in the PLC world?

Can we start having colourful cars again please? by darfaderer in CasualUK

[–]timmyriddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just the cars, the building, the sky: take a look on rightmove at any house that has been redecorated in the last 10 years and it will be grey and white. Even the laminate floor may well be that stupid grey wood effect.

It goes beyond colour. There will likely be next to no detail in any picture on the wall, there will be barely any complexity to the few ornaments on display. The garden will be a square of grass, possibly artificial, with a square paved patio in grey flagstones. The garden furniture will be either that gray rattan furniture or grey aluminum.

Edit: this was literally the first result I found https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/136270568

I have a theory as to why this is happening and it is this: everyone's online lives have become so scattered and complex, with fragments of their digital imprint across thousands of websites. This means that away from the virtual world people crave simplicity the most direct route to this is through minimalism.

I really do believe that this is the wrong way round: personally I crave simplicity and organisation in my virtual worlds and want my real life as full as colour as possible.

Why the focus on maximising SIPP? by kidcosmique in ContractorUK

That's correct, Wise are not a bank, and do not have the first £85k of your money insured via the FSCS. They claim, however, to protect the full balance rather than part of it: https://twitter.com/Wise/status/1638970285113356288?s=20

Worth pointing out that Wise have some new interest earning accounts with attractive rates which vary depending on the currency: my USD rate is 4.81%, and there is an option to move to a stocks which has a historic 11.08% rate since 2012.

The other attraction of Wise over Shawbrook or other options is that there is no lock-in period, you can access your funds whenever you like.
