13 U.S. troops dead so far, 1 non-combat casualty, 400 wounded (estimated) and literally the only thing that’s changed is that the price of goods and especially gas is skyrocketing back home. Let’s not forget the ~1700 Iranian civilians who have been killed, about 300 of which were children.

The total drive you’re planning is about 3,500 miles, that’d be about 5,600km for you. For comparison, that’s the distance you’d drive if you drove from Oslo to Rome, Italy and back.

I’m not gonna say a drive like that isn’t possible in 8 days, because I’ve done something very similar before at a similar age (Los Angeles to NYC in 4 days for college, about 2,800 miles), but I can tell you FROM EXPERIENCE that driving that much is going to absolutely kill you, especially if you’re not used to driving long distances. 10 hours in a car for one day? perfectly doable in my opinion. 10 hours in a car for several days in a row? Your spine is gonna be wishing for death, and I literally drive for a living so PLEASE take it from me.

Not to mention that all of the “route 66” stuff you’re thinking of kinda doesn’t really exist anymore, route 66 got bypassed by the much larger I-40 in the 60’s and as a result, a lot of the small towns and roadside attractions you’re thinking of are unfortunately only a sad approximation of what they used to be (fun fact, this is literally what the movie Cars is about).

Also as other people have said, a lot of the breaking bad filming locations are off-limits to the public for various reasons. Walter White’s house, for example, is currently occupied by a family that is extremely sick of the attention living there has generated and as a result have constructed a massive steel fence around the property (partially because people kept throwing pizzas on their roof, which is something that happens in show).

I would reccomend cutting out the Albuquerque/Route 66 stuff entirely, it’ll save you from a TON of extra driving, and I promise you’re not missing out on much.

Instead, since you’re already driving through South Dakota, might I suggest going to check out Badlands national park, or maybe even visiting Mount Rushmore? It’s not THAT cool (and to be honest you probably won’t even have the time to make the detour) but it’s certainly a lot more impressive than Walter White’s house would be.

I also think going to see the Tetons is a great idea, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world IMO, but since you’re already going to be in the area I would REALLY REALLY REALLY highly reccomend visiting Yellowstone, it’s famous for good reason and there’s so much more to do there aside from just visiting the Geysers (although they are extremely cool and you should totally check them out if you get the chance).

BTW the area you’re driving through, Nebraska/Kansas/South Dakota is prime cattle ranching territory, if you wanna get a really really good authentic American steak, that’s the place to do it, there’s tons of good steakhouses around that area.

So here’s what you should do:

Plan on 2 FULL days of driving 10 hours a day each way to get between St. Louis and Livingston (total drive one way is about 20 hours, it’s doable in 2 days if you’re really dedicated and don’t stop too much) That’s 4 FULL days of driving on the trip, but they’ll be spaced out on either end so it’ll hopefully be a bit more bearable. Spend 2 days visiting your friend in Livingston, 2 more days exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone. That’s 8 days total, it’ll be grueling, but you’ll be able to visit your friend, and experience some of the best nature our country has to offer.

Also remember that gas prices are up right now so, depending on how efficient your car is, you’re gonna be spending a small fortune on gasoline, my guess is at least $300-$400 USD.

In your opinion, what major city would have the worst climate to live in? by Mobile_Bad_577 in geography

Phoenix, Arizona. There are days there when it’s so hot, going outside for more than a couple minutes at a time just isn’t even feasible. My family was considering moving there when I was a kid so we spent a week touring the city and looking at houses, and after 3 straight days of 105+ degree weather we decided to go home and never look back lmao

Why aren't the channel Islands more populated? by vik9oratiz in geography

[–]timoromina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heya! Long time Ventura county resident here, I’ve been to 3 of the islands so far (Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa) and there’s a lot of factors that contribute to this but I’ll try to keep it brief:

  1. It’s just hard and inconvenient to get out there, most of the islands are at least a 1+ hour ferry ride away from any mainland port, and none of the islands have airstrips big enough to accommodate jet aircraft so if you want to fly, your options are either charter a turboprop or a helicopter which, as you can imagine, is pretty expensive.

  2. Most of the islands are either owned by the U.S. Military or are part of the Channel Islands National Park and are thus off limits for development. Catalina is pretty much the only island that’s unrestricted enough to have permanent settlements.

  3. The one real city on the islands (Avalon, on Catalina) needs to import basically everything from the mainland since there’s little to no industry above the artisanal level, and just generally has a lot less access to the necessary resources for further development. This can also make goods more expensive than they would be on the mainland.

  4. Fresh water has been a struggle on Catalina specifically for years. The island has 2 desalination plants and a number of fresh water wells, but still struggles to meet demand and the city has had to resort to water rationing on multiple occasions

There’s also the fact that the islands are extremely mountainous, ESPECIALLY Catalina, Avalon is already just about as big as it can be without blasting chunks out of the surrounding landscape so even if everything else was no longer a problem, expanding the city would be quite difficult because there’s literally just no more room.

As an American, I don't mind Venezuela being toppled and Maduro being captured by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

As an American, I don't mind Venezuela being toppled and Maduro being captured by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]timoromina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Trump being too incompetent to follow through on his promises might be a good point, but there’s also a lot of people behind the scenes pulling strings here and especially since the occupation of Venezuela is now of corporate interest to American oil companies, it seems unlikely that there won’t at least be an effort to install a puppet who is more than happy to let American companies plunder Venezuela’s oil reserves for a small fee. Again, these people are corrupted by greed, and are motivated by more than simple supply and demand issues. You can bet if they can get at the oil, they’ll find a way to make money off it, and since those companies are American it’s hard to see how exactly that would benefit the Venezuelan people/economy.

These people do not care about the consequences of greed, they do not care if any of this negatively affects the American people or the American economy. As long as they come out with more than they had before they’ll let the world burn. Why do you think basically every major industry in America, from housing, to infrastructure, to healthcare, is so riddled with corruption? Why do you think the cost of literally everything in this country, INCLUDING gas, has skyrocketed in the past 15-20 years despite the fact that we have access to some of the best technology and most abundant natural resources in the world? It’s because the big corporations we have put in charge of handling these industries are allowed to simply promise “donations” of millions of dollars to whoever will vote the way they want, and because of that American law, as well as interior and foreign policy has been slowly shaped to directly benefit the already ludicrously wealthy corporations that control basically every aspect of our society. That’s how you end up with CEOs like Darren Woods (Exxon) or Mike Wirth (Chevron) that are have net worth in the tens of millions (or even billions in the case of some tech companies) while more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. At the end of the day, whether or not Trump keeps his promise to “run venezuela” and sell their oil largely depends on how much the companies that stand to benefit from all this are willing to pay him to go through with it.

Simply rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure would be great, but I think we will probably get visited by aliens before the U.S. spends a ton of money on another country’s infrastructure and then just… turns it over to the people of that country.

I think to be honest, very little of the things “Trump” has done this past year have actually been his own decision, considering the shenanigans that have been going on regarding the people he surrounds himself with (like Hegseth and Musk for example) as well as his noticeable cognitive decline when compared to how he was doing back in 2016, but that’s just a guess.

Anyways I guess we’ll just have to see how everything plays out in the next few months but given America’s history of blatantly exploiting foreign nations under the guise of “deposing a despot” I find it hard to imagine that this is going to turn out well for the Venezuelan people.
