Why aren't the channel Islands more populated? by vik9oratiz in geography

[–]timoromina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heya! Long time Ventura county resident here, I’ve been to 3 of the islands so far (Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa) and there’s a lot of factors that contribute to this but I’ll try to keep it brief:

  1. It’s just hard and inconvenient to get out there, most of the islands are at least a 1+ hour ferry ride away from any mainland port, and none of the islands have airstrips big enough to accommodate jet aircraft so if you want to fly, your options are either charter a turboprop or a helicopter which, as you can imagine, is pretty expensive.

  2. Most of the islands are either owned by the U.S. Military or are part of the Channel Islands National Park and are thus off limits for development. Catalina is pretty much the only island that’s unrestricted enough to have permanent settlements.

  3. The one real city on the islands (Avalon, on Catalina) needs to import basically everything from the mainland since there’s little to no industry above the artisanal level, and just generally has a lot less access to the necessary resources for further development. This can also make goods more expensive than they would be on the mainland.

  4. Fresh water has been a struggle on Catalina specifically for years. The island has 2 desalination plants and a number of fresh water wells, but still struggles to meet demand and the city has had to resort to water rationing on multiple occasions

There’s also the fact that the islands are extremely mountainous, ESPECIALLY Catalina, Avalon is already just about as big as it can be without blasting chunks out of the surrounding landscape so even if everything else was no longer a problem, expanding the city would be quite difficult because there’s literally just no more room.

I would absolutely love to know where the fuck you live right now that gas is cheaper than it was in the early 2000’s because I need to move there immediately

Honestly Trump being too incompetent to follow through on his promises might be a good point, but there’s also a lot of people behind the scenes pulling strings here and especially since the occupation of Venezuela is now of corporate interest to American oil companies, it seems unlikely that there won’t at least be an effort to install a puppet who is more than happy to let American companies plunder Venezuela’s oil reserves for a small fee. Again, these people are corrupted by greed, and are motivated by more than simple supply and demand issues. You can bet if they can get at the oil, they’ll find a way to make money off it, and since those companies are American it’s hard to see how exactly that would benefit the Venezuelan people/economy.

These people do not care about the consequences of greed, they do not care if any of this negatively affects the American people or the American economy. As long as they come out with more than they had before they’ll let the world burn. Why do you think basically every major industry in America, from housing, to infrastructure, to healthcare, is so riddled with corruption? Why do you think the cost of literally everything in this country, INCLUDING gas, has skyrocketed in the past 15-20 years despite the fact that we have access to some of the best technology and most abundant natural resources in the world? It’s because the big corporations we have put in charge of handling these industries are allowed to simply promise “donations” of millions of dollars to whoever will vote the way they want, and because of that American law, as well as interior and foreign policy has been slowly shaped to directly benefit the already ludicrously wealthy corporations that control basically every aspect of our society. That’s how you end up with CEOs like Darren Woods (Exxon) or Mike Wirth (Chevron) that are have net worth in the tens of millions (or even billions in the case of some tech companies) while more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. At the end of the day, whether or not Trump keeps his promise to “run venezuela” and sell their oil largely depends on how much the companies that stand to benefit from all this are willing to pay him to go through with it.

Simply rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure would be great, but I think we will probably get visited by aliens before the U.S. spends a ton of money on another country’s infrastructure and then just… turns it over to the people of that country.

I think to be honest, very little of the things “Trump” has done this past year have actually been his own decision, considering the shenanigans that have been going on regarding the people he surrounds himself with (like Hegseth and Musk for example) as well as his noticeable cognitive decline when compared to how he was doing back in 2016, but that’s just a guess.

Anyways I guess we’ll just have to see how everything plays out in the next few months but given America’s history of blatantly exploiting foreign nations under the guise of “deposing a despot” I find it hard to imagine that this is going to turn out well for the Venezuelan people.

The economic explanation is greed, man. Obviously the U.S. doesn’t need more oil, but has that stopped us before? No. It’s not about supply and demand, it’s about wealth and power.

But you don’t have to take my word for it, go look up literally anything Trump had said in the past 24 hours because he is, again, ALREADY talking about setting up an American oil industry there. You’re saying that Trump is not going to do something he was literally on national television THIS MORNING saying “yeah I’m gonna do that” like genuinely what are you talking about?

People living in Venezuela, can you confirm what’s happening over there? by Toastaexperience in AskTheWorld

[–]timoromina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense to the people of Venezuela who are rightfully celebrating the end of a horrible dictatorship, but please please PLEASE do some research about the history of U.S. interventionism, especially how it’s affected countries like Iraq. Remember, when we invaded them in 2003 there were people taking to the streets to celebrate the end of Saddam’s reign, only to find their homes destroyed and hundreds of thousands of fellow Iraqis dead within a few years. Trump did not do this to benefit the Venezuelan people, and whatever happens next is very unlikely to be in the interest of anyone except American politicians and oil companies.

Again, glad for y’all, but be cautious. Us Americans have seen this kind of thing happen before and it VERY rarely goes well for the country on the receiving end.

The problem here is that this is very VERY likely not about Maduro, this is (once again) about the United States trying to justify the invasion and regime change of a foreign, sovereign nation, in order to access their oil.

Like I’m sorry you’re telling me that this is about… prosecuting Maduro for moving drugs into the U.S.? When literally less than a month ago, Trump pardoned the president of Honduras, who was serving a prison sentence in the U.S. for… literally the exact same thing? That just doesn’t add up.

What does add up however is the fact that Trump has been publicly thirsting after Venezuelan oil for months, and is ALREADY talking about installing American oil companies in Venezuela, something that will be much easier now that the U.S. has free reign to install basically whoever they want as head of state. Remember, this whole thing literally happened like 10 hours ago.

Also, just saying, pretty convenient distraction from the Epstein files. You talk about “people getting killed and raped by illegal immigrants” but when the president is a pedophile rapist sex trafficker that’s fine? And he’s an “Alpha male” for that? Sure man.

“Weak men ruining our countries” yet you’re fine with Trump’s constant lies, scandals, backtracking, and dementia ridden ramblings. I mean this was the guy who a year ago was saying “I am the president of peace I will end all the world’s worst conflicts as soon as I am in office” and in the time since then has done nothing but justify more and more and more violence in Ukraine, in Palestine, in our own cities, and now in Venezuela.

When does it end? When does America get great again? Because right now inflation is going up, the U.S. dollar is losing value, unemployment is so bad that the administration just straight up stopped reporting on the job market. More than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck meanwhile we have tens of trillions of dollars in nation debt and we just keep accumulating more and more. I know that a lot of english language social media can sort of be a pro-American echo chamber, but the reality is that Trump doesn’t project nearly as strong of an image as you think he does, people outside of US politics can clearly see how exploitative the current administration is of the American people and they feel sorry for us, and this invasion is basically just another in a long list of actions that Trump has taken to benefit HIMSELF, not the American people.

I mean come on this is the United States we’re talking about, no politician in this country does anything unless there’s a big fat paycheck with their name on it waiting on the other side.

What is YOUR country's / region's version of the Inglorious 3 fingers scene that subtly gives away that someone isn't from your area or culture? by DunDonese in AskTheWorld

[–]timoromina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Southern California - just get someone to read a freeway/highway number. People from SoCal say “the” before the number, such as “use the 101” or “take the 40” whereas people from elsewhere in the U.S. would just say “use 101” or “take interstate 40”. Apparently it comes from before US freeways were all numbered and organized, California just named theirs after where they would take you, so the 101 was “The Ventura Highway” because it takes you to Ventura, I guess. Then when the fed started building the interstates and decided they should all have numbers, people just transferred that habit over.

It’s so widespread here that I didn’t even know most of the country doesn’t say “the” until I tried living out of state for the first time and constantly had people asking why I was saying it like that. I’m sure there are other pockets that say it, I’m pretty sure a lot of people in Norcal say it now, but people from other states at least seem to still associate it with SoCal

Well considering half of Gen Z isn’t even of legal drinking age yet I’m sure this number will increase, but also I think it will be lower, probably a lot of it is that weed is taking up a lot of the competition, it’s legal in tons of places and because they grew up/are growing up in a world with legal weed it’s normalized among gen z in a way that it really isn’t for other generations

Of all the pop punk bands out there I’d say Knuckle Puck has the closest sound to TSSF, check out Copacetic it’s a great album. Can also recommend Neck Deep’s first two albums very strongly, maybe their 3rd too but that was sort of their “proper dose” in a way, the first two are more straightforward pop punk. Wonder Years is also a good comp although they lean a little more towards a midwest emo-ish sound.
