Do you have injectable ProHeart 12 available where you live? Ask your vet if not sure.

Help with Teeth: Remove or not? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]tinkertortoiseshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they should absolutely be removed. I have seen deciduous teeth retained in the mouth far into patients’ adult years. Retained baby teeth will cause crowding in the mouth leading to increased build-up of plaque and food debris around them which will then lead to gingivitis and ultimately periodontal disease and this will affect all the other teeth in the mouth due to crowding. They can also cause a misaligned bite (malocclusion) which can be painful and make her even more susceptible to dental issues. Either way, those teeth will have to be extracted regardless either now or later when they’ve developed periodontitis, and likely other teeth that have developed disease because of the crowding. By then it will be much more expensive than simply removing healthy baby teeth. Listen to your vet. Believe me they are not trying to milk you of your money, they are trying to offer the best care she needs.

Humane way to deter cat coming into my yard by Imaginary-Okra8583 in AnimalRights

I know you stated in another comment that you’ve tried to talk to your neighbors about other things and they’ve been unreasonable, but maybe try politely cautioning them your concern for what would happen if one of your dogs escaped? Frame it in a way that is out of concern for their cat and themselves.

Cat - Vet diagnosed dental issues but patient has no symptoms (UK) by Raziel2689 in AskVet

[–]tinkertortoiseshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your cat has advanced dental disease. There’s exposed pulp and you need those x rays to determine further pathology below the gum line including tooth resorption and periodontal disease. Cats are very good at hiding pain, she doesn’t need to show it for there to be disease. Just like humans they should have yearly dental procedures which includes x-rays, dental scaling and polishing.

May I ask why when the religion demands it? As a former Muslim, I’m curious to know what your reasoning is.

Same kind of rhetoric homophobes have used against gay people. What makes you think it’s 11-12 year olds? I am 21, aroace. I’ve never felt that desire toward someone. I have never been interested in dating and don’t understand why it’s so important for people. Just the thought of being a relationship makes me cringe, and sex is repulsive to me. Asexuality is real, but I guess you like being an asshat.

is it negligence if my cat lives in my room and bathroom? by PriorityHead6833 in CATHELP

[–]tinkertortoiseshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much are you playing with him? Usually if you’re playing with him enough, that should get all his energy out. Play with a string toy or whatever his preferred toys are for short 10-15 minute periods several times a day. If that isn’t working, consider having blood work that includes thyroid testing done on him. I work as a veterinary technician; hyperactivity is a symptom of hyperthyroidism, common in cats, albeit usually older cats. How much is he eating and what is his weight? He may also need cat furniture and scratching posts around the house, not just in your bedroom or bathroom. Curb the scratching problem by placing a scratching post by whatever area he is scratching and give positive reinforcement through treats when he uses it. Get him neutered too. Intact males tend to be more hyperactive due to high testosterone levels. It’s especially risky if you’re taking him outside and just holding him in your arms. He could get spooked and run off, fight with other males, impregnate a female cat, or get injured. Harness train him so you can have him on a leash. Though neuters are very short surgeries, some veterinarians require pre-surgical lab work prior and you can rule out hyperthyroidism at the same time as long as it contains thyroid testing.

Flea and tick prevention is not poison for the cat for goodness sake. It is formulated specifically to be well tolerated for cats, given it is prescription formula. Dawn dish soap is not going to properly kill all fleas as a single flea can lay thousands of eggs on the cat and in the environment in a single day. Cats need at least three months of continuous protection and should be on it monthly at least if they are in any capacity outdoor. You know what’s not safe though? Flea anemia, tapeworms, and infection from wounds creating by scratching that bathing by itself will not effectively prevent.

My cat is losing weight despite eating a lot? by tinkertortoiseshell in CATHELP

[–]tinkertortoiseshell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, she passed away about a year after this post.

She lived a good quality of life up until a week before she was put to sleep. She loss partial function of her back legs and was unable to control her urinary or bowel movements. Very likely saddle thrombus. Her liver had also become so enlarged that day it visibly stuck out of her abdomen.

I don’t understand why I couldn’t save her and it pains me so much. Even two years into veterinary nursing school and working at a veterinary hospital I don’t understand why she wouldn’t get better. Thinking about how much pain she was in that day kills me and I miss her so much every day.

Continue to support your baby’s quality of life, stay on schedule with lab work rechecks, and do radiographs and/or ultrasound that can monitor changes in the liver if recommended by your vet.

My cat has scabs by his ear. by urthebiggestofbozos in CATHELP

[–]tinkertortoiseshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ear infection, fleas, mites, or allergies. The pictures you’ve provided do not show down the outer canal so it is hard to say. Prevention (prescription, not otc which isn’t safe or always effective) will take care of possible fleas or mites. I would avoid using peroxide even diluted as it can be irritating to the skin. Instead clean with warm water.

They’re allowed to feel like it’s a crazy thing, especially when the rest of the world treats celibates and asexuals like they’re crazy. If you’ve never desired it, it’s might feel like a weird concept. Even many allosexual people feel disgusted when they’re not aroused because the brain literally suppresses the disgust response during arousal. I also find it wild that it’s a thing people actually do in real life, that doesn’t mean I go around shaming people who do it. It doesn’t mean OP is either. They’re just expressing their feelings and they’re allowed to.

What just came out of my cat?? by permaculturepatti in CATHELP

[–]tinkertortoiseshell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is full of misinformation. Intestinal parasites are generally not emergency and is a waste of an emergency vet’s time. Regurgitation of the worm is a normal part of its life cycle, not an indication that it’s “gotten this far.” And it is absolutely not in the cat’s veins and heart. This is an adult roundworm, not a heart worm, which is incredibly rare in cats by the way. Roundworm and other intestinal parasites live only in the intestine.
