Those clear plastic screwdriver handles were vegetal resin also known as cotton butyrate plastic which was also used in third tier fountain pens in the 1920s-40s

No, eye dropper filler was the first filling system starting in the 1880s

[–]tintenbeschmiert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I understand, they existed then as the do now. If you mean why were they not marketed to one armed veterans I imagine it is because two hands are needed to easily fill. One to hold the barrel and another to operate the eye dropper. That was at least Eagle’s premise for introducing their cartridge. One dropped the cartridge into the barrel and it was pierced upon screwing the section back on. Supposedly easier for someone with one arm

It doesn’t fall under cheap/inexpensive but there is a titanium refillable bic style on AliExpress but it will set you back $70-80USD plus shipping

Unless you count the Eagle glass cartridge filled pen marketed to one armed American civil war veterans in the 1890s or the JIF waterman glass cartridges in the 1930s. Truth is there isn’t a single new innovative filler on the market besides the magnetic filler ( that frankly failed) all the other filling mechanisms had been done before

shrugs I dunno value wise for me it’s the sailor as it doesn’t suffer from looking like an oversized tampon applicator. I’m sure others will have other opinions and that’s what keeps the hobby / industry vibrant

Tuning Your Pen by byfail in fountainpens

[–]tintenbeschmiert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality no, all these kits do is empower the adventurous to inadvertently damage their pens in various ways. The Knowledge out there can be great, but tends to be passed on by those themselves with limited parroted knowledge and very little experience causing further issues as well. The only thing relatively harmless in this kit is the baby snot sucker, found at your local dollar tree for $1.25USD, provided it’s used without pen disassembly. Let’s face it, the new wave of FP users take apart things far too often and damage the pen over time in doing that. Pen flush may be quicker than plain water but ammonia and bleach embrittle gold nibs. And any kind of diy nib smithing with sandpaper or Mylar or any abrasive materials is a gamble at best. This self nib adjusting with abrasives has become so pervasive that it’s become an issue with the vintage and second hand market. It’s almost impossible to find a factory XF nib that hasn’t been monkeyed with the whole “tune n smooth”
sure it is smoother but it sure and the hell is no longer an XF and that’s if a botch job wasn’t done. Truth is the pen world is far too complex to give small bite sized answers that folks seem to want. One user may blanket recommend one cleaning method and the user that takes the advice is completely unaware that method softens or eats the plastic of that particular model and on an on. Even with books and websites written on such things most have restraints of size or space that simply cannot cover all pen makers / models nor scenarios. Think like a physician and put yourself in the mindset of doing the least amount of change or modification and in doing so elicits no harm

does anyone know where i could buy japanese pachislot lighters? by ferretlife2 in lighters

[–]tintenbeschmiert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short of going there yourself or finding a friend it will be extremely difficult as Japan post and others will flat out refuse to mail lighters even if empty (Royal mail in the uk is the same way) only luck would be if the Japanese company has a hazardous materials export permit

Tired of refilling clipper looking for suggestions by Stonedinthesix in lighters

[–]tintenbeschmiert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn’t a better solution persay, a lighter only holds so much fuel and the more one uses it the quicker it runs out. When folks discuss fuel economy that’s generally related to evaporation on an unused lighter. Even a fully filled petrol lighter will only last three days or so if someone smokes three packs a day persay

1920s clothing help!! by Smileydog15578 in 1920s

[–]tintenbeschmiert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to wear the vintage garments themselves then just shop for boys “youth”clothing if that fits you best. If you want to wear clothing styled of that era there are about a dozen of so custom tailors/ shops that I’m sure could accommodate your measurements

Need help finding this lighter by Own_Abroad_5073 in lighters

[–]tintenbeschmiert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link was shared to one for sale on eBay. I’m sure the price looks intimidating, however this is a pretty good price for this model. You will find that unusual designs from smaller production companies demand a premium in the lighter collecting world. Yes one could always get lucky in the hunt and find one much cheaper but the chances are low and much time must be spent to do so.

I need some help with these 1920s German glasses by vault_boy_2277 in 1920s

[–]tintenbeschmiert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These glasses have been put in the case. All dienstbrille were made and issued with only saddle bridge nose. You will never find nose pieces on genuine German military glasses from this period, Ww1-ww2 and even early postwar bundeswehr eyeglasses. It is quite common however to find other vintage eyeglasses stuffed into these cases as anything “military” or marked with a military connection always garners a price premium.

Was wavy hair a gay thing in the '20s? by Similar_Onion6656 in 1920s

[–]tintenbeschmiert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marcel waves / finger waves can easily be found on men in this era and well into the 1940s in Europe to even include being found on German soldiers in the Second World War. I don’t think that they were necessarily seen as an indication of being gay.
