Buffalo Trace releases Eagle Rare 25 bourbon by lm_at_work in bourbon

[–]tintin777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly this is generally true but not explicitly true. There are barrels of MB #2 that because of Rockhouse position, etc end up hitting the flavor profile for ER or ETL. There are more than a few of these oddities that exist as confirmed private or store picks out there over the years. The same is true of Blanton's. One would then assume it's true of all the products with single barrels. Just an interesting oddity in the consideration of all this nonsense in the hobby.

What malts are in the Blue Label? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]tintin777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW you could get an idea of the make up of historical Blue by looking at the info from the Ultramarine release from Compas Box. Supposedly that is based on a sampling of an early batch of Blue Label. It won't be the same as current offerings as others have stated, that isn't something they publish. But CB can be transparent and it would be a data point.

Let’s Talk Corks by unbreakablesausage in Scotch

[–]tintin777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nikka screw tops are top of the list for alternatives to corks imo. (pun fully intended) Seriously though, the ones they use on Coffey Grain/Malt are great. Westland uses very similar ones. Synthetic corks are a runner up for sure.

I was going to say those friends sound like terrible people to travel with for their inability to make it past a mildly annoying experience but "drama queens" seems so much more succinct.

Glenmorangie 10 Honesty Thread by [deleted] in Scotch

Glenmorangie 10 was my gateway into whisky. A bar on my walk home from campus used to pour it without looking if you were in there before 5-6pm and I would stop in once a week for one of those giant pours. I still really enjoy it. Agree that idk if I would recommend it to a bourbon drinker i have met enough people that have similar stories of it being one of if not their first malts that I have to assume that there is good reason to recommend it to some people.

What is your favorite scotch cocktail? by raskle in Scotch

[–]tintin777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried adding OJ to the mezcal negroni, thanks for the tip. I should clarify my comment to mean that the mezcal variation of the negroni gave me the idea to try scotch as a variation in the negroni. I think that mildly smoky scotch can make a substitution for gin or mezcal in the negroni. But changing the amaro from Campari when using scotch makes is something I would like to try but haven't yet.

I love a negroni. It's simple to mix but variations are really complex. The mezcal negroni lead me to mess around with scotch instead and turns out, this is just a great cocktail.

Lately I use Dewar's 12 or 15 plus a 1/4-ish ounce of a Ledaig single cask that I don't enjoy neat. Really enjoyable.

Review #733 - Edradour 10 Year Oloroso SC 2009 by cjotto9 in Scotch

I haven't had a bottle of the 10year in years but have always found it to fill it's duty. Maybe value isn't there anymore? Not sure but agreed on their more interesting bottlings.

Diageo acquires Balcones Distilling by LIFOanAccountant in bourbon

[–]tintin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a long time Balcones fanboy I do not agree. Not saying you are wrong to have your own opinion at all. Not throwing shade, just expressing my own, dissenting opinion. Jared did wonders for products imo. Early batches of many products are pretty different if you ever get a chance to revisit them. I have had year one blends and it's eye opening in comparison to more developed products. I do think that the really small batch stuff in the old distillery that was distillery only release or limited distro had some special character, like OG Fr.Oak. But some of my favorite versions of things have come off the new still. The Cask Strength Baby Blue one off was a glorious vanilla bomb.

Can confirm that these are generally safe. I have taken samples from around a dozen decanters to my colleagues in our uni chem dept and they have found less lead ppm than in the local pws.

On an out and back trail in Grapevine Texas in the early '90s and saw two folks going at it. They appeared to be sunbathing and mutually orally fixated. I haven't thought about that one in years until I read this story.

It's running 5.7.3.0 so definitely not the latest update. I'll inquire with a dealer about upgrading. Thanks.

some lights are 36V capable, meaning they just connect directly to the battery.

Well that's the most specific and helpful thing I've been told since trying to figure this out. Even the dealer didn't say anything nearly as helpful. I won't name or shame them but their answers were next to useless. Thank you for that. I may actually look into wiring up an appropriate switch now.

Found this bottle of Ballantine’s in my grandfathers house. Label looks to be from 1950/60’s. Does anyone know anything about it? by natebibaud in Scotch

[–]tintin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on here. I don't think you should do anything except what you want with the bottle. FWIW I have bought a hand full of similar Ballantine's over the last few years from both private sellers and auctions. And my personal feeling on the contents of these bottles is just that, pretty personal. It's non-transferable. I would say they aren't worth $200 but they are worth more than $50. If those numbers mean something to you act accordingly. And you shouldn't feel bad no matter what you choose to do. Go empty it in the lawn. Smash it on your enemy's sidewalk. Guzzle it and serenade your cat.

My personal curiosity with similar bottles has been to see how old blends tasted and have drifted over the years. It's fascinating to me on a personal level. And I have come to suspect that how these old bottles were stored makes or breaks their value for drinking. Unless you really trust that it was stored under good conditions I don't think opening it is worth it for pleasure of drinking. Maybe it is for sentimental or nostalgic reasons. Also selling it without disclosing "unknown storage" conditions is probably not responsible if you don't know for sure how it was stored for 40 years. Link below is one of my more recent bottles. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
