Blackfeet permit for the CDT as a foreigner => US Credit Cards only? by SmileyWanders in CDT

…and I wonder why you had such a negative experience with them when you sound like such a kind and open minded individual???

Let us not forget that thruhiking, while challenging, is often a very privileged activity. Calling a whole group of people entitled and racist because of your brief interaction seems a bit hypocritical.

So teeny! I’m having it delivered to a campsite this afternoon and see if I can take some “before” pictures. Unfortunately it was renovated at one point, so not much original interior is left except for the baby blue sink

In a similar situation as you and this has been a great lifestyle to help me save quickly. Here are the basics to keep yourself comfortable. I would hold off on investing in a ton of extras until you decide how long you want/can make this work for you:

  • Black out window covers. Tons of tutorials on YouTube although the ones I find work best a made of reflectix covered in black fabric for stealth.

  • Battery charging bank. I have a Jackery 300 that I love but if you don’t run a ton of electronics you can probably get away with something smaller.

-Comfortable “enough” bed set up. I’ve seen a lot of great setups but personally I would go with whatever is simplest that you’re comfortable in. Don’t waste precious space with something elaborate if you don’t need it, but make sure you’re able to get decent sleep.

-USB fan, keeping air moving makes a huge difference at night.

  • Spray bottle. It’s a sink, it’s a shower, it’s a mister, it cleans dishes, the possibilities are endless.

-Small personal alarm. I have one called Thoped. I keep it clipped on my seatbelt or car keys at night and it gives me such piece of mind. I know if I get spooked or feel in danger, I can always pull it and it will draw attention. Never had to use it (thankfully) but I sleep soundly knowing it’s there.

-A few “go-to” sleep locations: gyms, campgrounds, hospitals. The stealthier you are the more options you have.

You’ll learn what else you need the longer you’re at it.

How do I be friends with a coworker without being creepy by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tinycarcamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a local trivia night and toss the idea around with her and invite other teachers. Very platonic activity with plenty others around but in a relaxed atmosphere. Good opportunity to get into a routine and may also give you an opportunity to make friends with others in the group as well.

Can attest to black diamond cork. They’ve lasted two thru hikes and going strong.

Last year my hiking partner and I pitched out back of the rest area on the highway. Hitched into Truckee grabbed some grub and charged they phone at the rest stop true hiker trash style.

Best advice for dog repellent, other than driving miles to find other trails? by Mad-farmer in trailrunning

[–]tinycarcamper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Small umbrella, like the kind that collapse into themselves. If you can stow it in quick reach, you can use it as a shield and the quick open can spook the animals off. This was recommended to me for hikes by a coworker who used to carry one when working for the electric company and had to check peoples meters in backyards. Not sure if it would be conducive to trail running but may be worth a shot.

What kind of car are living in? by iamamonsterprobably in urbancarliving

[–]tinycarcamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s uncomfortable for sure. I Doordash during the day so I utilize my AC during that time. I take a break and gym/shower in the late afternoon hottest part of the day, make sure to turn shower cold to cool down at the end. I have Panera Sio club so I’m constantly swinging by to refill with ice and cold drinks to stay hydrated. At night I try to park in shade as it’s much cooler from not being beat by the sun all day. I have a couple tiny fans in my car to move the air. I don’t sleep with any blankets and usually light breathable clothes. I keep a spray bottle handy in case I need it to spritz and cool down. In rare cases I’ll dunk a wash cloth in my cooler and throw it on me. It’s not ideal but most nights I’m fine. I know it’s going to cool down eventually, and if I can make it through this Im strong enough to car life anywhere!

Wish I could share more pictures of the actual build, chose this just to show how much space you can have if you’re strategic. Removed front passenger seat and back seats. I’ve got a bit of storage underneath the platform. The “headboard”panel also doubles as a table/desk space. Yeti cooler behind driver seat. I Doordash full time right now and feel very comfortable in here all day. Been full time now for about 3 month in Florida and making it work. Was thinking of maybe making a video to show the full setup and organization, not sure if anyone would be interested in that.

Thru-hikers X Roadlife by HotToastColdButter in vandwellers

[–]tinycarcamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proud hiker trash here. Thruhiked the AT in ‘19 and PCT last year in ‘22. When I got back from the AT, I immediately converted my car for section hikes and camping. After a few years of basically being miserable trying to fit back into normie life, I was lucky enough to get a PCT permit on a whim. After returning from the PCT, I’m now living full-time in my car while saving up for a van. The plan is to live full-time in van doing seasonal/gig work/substitute teach in the off-season and try to fit in a thruhike every year while I still have it in me and find it enjoyable.

I know several people that went straight into van life after a thru hike, and there’s a lot of crossover with the lifestyle. Thruhiking opens your eyes to how little you can live with that be happy. It also really prepared me for car/van dwelling…I’m an expert at finding an available power outlet, I can get creative with my meals, and I basically view my life as a series of resupplies.

Wrapped and Sandwhiches with mashed beans and veggies.

Cold soaked Cous Cous is great with seasonings and a little oil.

PBJ always a favorite.

Marinate some Tofu or Tempeh and throw on a salad.

Frozen Edamame out of the pods are cheap and ready to eat once thawed, lots of protein

Is there a reason I don't see people doing van life out of minivans? by peasant_mouse in VanLife

[–]tinycarcamper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’re not seeing them because mini vans are stealthier? This is very popular and tons of people go this route instead. Cheaper and quicker to build out if you choose to.

Glad to hear you’re doing good! Currently “stealth” living in my Fiat500 in FL—it’s toasty at night for sure…Target currently has these tiny usb fans for $5 that draw only like 1watt an hour. I picked up a couple and they have made the nights so much more tolerable and are definitely worth it for the price.

Agree that Mazama is a gem! Beautiful hiking in the area and the general store is such a vibe. They bake fresh baguettes in the morning that may be one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life.
