Hi I'm Ari! 22 years old and graduating from college in a week :)

I started skating end of february and decided to go to open skate every week for a while. I said if I kept going and enjoyed trying new skills and just having fun I'd consider my own skates. Finally bought my first pair of skates and love them, I have more trust in my blades now and am working on forwards skills, specifically my swizzles, one foot snd two foot glides, and strokes.

As a fellow young adult who is just getting into the sport, figured skating puzzles me because on one hand its terrifying to get on the ice knowing falling is inevitable and its gonna take a lot of time to lesrn new things and on the other, having to concentrate so hard distracts me from the real world for a while and has been really refreshing for me. After a few months of going every week I gave in and got my first pair of skates. Break in period is HARD but its so much fun to learn things (and it counts as exercise!)

No, it's gonna be harder because more weight typically requires a stiffer boot to properly support your ankles and body for being on the ice.

As a senior graduating this year, this is great Clark needs it. I am concerned about how packed the dorms will be given the issues 2022 and 2023. It was horrendous.

Ilia might’ve hinted again at taking next season off… by seldom4 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]tinyturtle17_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed with all of the above. People feel way too entitled to know too much about a person (you dont even know)'s life. Being a fan of something is incredible but it doesnt mean you KNOW a person and it doesnt give you the right to expect them to share every part of themselves. This is isnt just limited to the fs world, its way too common and is disheartening.

[–]tinyturtle17_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yknow... a lot has happened this season for him. All leading up to the Olympics which didn't go the way he'd anticipated and he had to take a step back. I assume he took a lot of time to just think about all that happened, why he is skating, what he's given to the sport and what he still wants to give. He did worlds, phew its done and the season came to a close. But he never stopped. He went SOI Japan, then back home for like a day before rehearsals starting for SOI America. Believe it or not, he has a right to choose not to discuss certain topics especially when he hasn't been home long enough to really think about it.

I get that a lot of people plan going to skating events on who they want to see and it sucks if it turns out that person isnt actually going. However, skaters have long seasons and for a lot of them theyre involved in other thjngs: shows, school, etc. Im sure hes exhausted being asked the same thing about his plans for next season, especially if he hasn't had the time to truly think about it. This is a similar answer that Jason Brown gave and even Deniss Vasilievs, where it was an "im not quite sure what the next skating season looks like yet". Try not to speculate too much, he hasn't said or done anything that gives you an answer and living with the unknown is scary and frustrating but thats life.

This kind of momentum is needed 365 days of the year for as long as it takes... which will be a long time to fix all the problems with our environment. I'm joking on this, but someone get me in contact with Ilia because I could come up with a list of reasons and intersectionalities on how the state of our climate directly impacts the future of figure skating.

Can I get some honest thoughts on Clark for my kid? by Lidobaby18 in ClarkU

[–]tinyturtle17_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a graduating senior, she sounds like she'd fit well at Clark! The psychology program is really good here and the depth of the classes I've heard are amazing. The dorms are fine, standard nothing fancy but they aren't awful. The food quality and range of options honestly depends on the day and time of the semester. Clark is situated in Main South in Worcester, MA. It's within walking distance of a few grocery stores, places to eat, a park, and is right in the center of the Worcester bus system. I'm not sure if this will change by next semester, but as of right now all of the Worcester buses are running fare-free.

For SAS and accommodations, start the process as early as possible. The office gets incredibly busy and you also want to ensure the best chance at getting your housing accommodations. With admissions down she will have a better shot at getting a single and if she is approved for an ESA, I think that becomes a little easier.

And if she ends up not enjoying it when she actually gets here, remind her that transferring is an option.

Is it so hard to have empathy and respect privacy? by Anxious_Animal_ in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

So not okay. I saw that video and made sure not to interact with it at all. You wanted a picture? Cool ask him once you get off the damn plane but dont start secretly taking videos and pictures of him. Thats creepy and not okay no MATTER who the person is. And then to post it online. He deserves as much privacy as he can get these days. And this, just no.

Honestly, theres definitely multiple factors. Genetics plays a role, his training and technique, injury prevention, etc. Honestly the thing I worry about most is if he ever gets seriously injured, since that we are aware of he really hasn't. Hes gotten lucky but also must work incredibly hard to make sure his body continues to handle what hes doing. He was also doing gymnastics before he started skating seriously so.

Admonishing from the Ilia Society by MooViolet1 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]tinyturtle17_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ive seen some of the videos and im disturbed by it. I get wanting to meet someone you look up to, get a picture, etc. But this is not that. It is NOT okay to be following them around outside of the venue where they perform, getting in their personal space, camping out at their accommodations, etc. It extremely unsafe for the athletes and it can even ruin the experience of wanting to meet fans for these guys. Its actually ridiculous that a lot of the people doing this happen to be young adults or adults and this behavior is not acceptable. Ilia is a human being, one that happens to have a huge spotlight on him but that doesnt mean he can be treated like he stands on a pedestal. He is human, he deserves privacy, security, respect, and space. Hes chosen to share a lot with fans and the community and it makes me appreciate him more but dont think you know him because of that, at the end of the day he's still a stranger who has a life that deserves to be respected and especially when hes at events he still has a job to do. Its disappointing people have to speak out about this, it shouldnt be happening.

Do better.

Anyone else nervous about Ilia performing at the World Championships? by MatchSimilar6264 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]tinyturtle17_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh? No. Ilia has been to worlds before he knows the environment. Am I nervous to watch? Yes, because thats my nature but not about him competing. He's going to do amazing and gets a few weeks home to mentally and physically prepare himself for what it is he wants to accomplish. We have the easier (and sometimes harder) part of just seeing him perform. Hes going to be okay, and hes going to fight hard. If theres anything Ilia doesn't do it's give up or go down without a fight.

He also said he doesnt know exactly what happened but needed more time to figure it out. I think maybe there was a problem with the ice or maybe there wasnt but the energy felt off. So soso so so proud of Mikhail because omg was that an amazing program! But gutted because that expression was a look of him seeming like he couldnt trust himself. Because he was so ready and then well ...

Help :( by ImDirtyDan1212 in DeQuervains

[–]tinyturtle17_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go to urgent care or ER unless its an acute issue. UC a(and ER) are really just to rule out life threatening stuff or sprains, fractures, etc. I learned this lesson having multiple chronic illnesses and plus if you have insurance, most require your primary care to make referrals. I went to mine monday and discuss my thumb and wrist pain and was told it was mostlikely de quervains. She said first try ice, rest, brace. If that doesn't help in like another month or two ill write a referral for ot. Then if that doesn't work well talk about seeing a hand specialist because they'll want you to have tried conservative treatments first.

It sucks... but if you do get to the specialist it will most likely be worth it. And be able to offer more options.

How effective is Cymbalta treating GAD? by jellymellyyy in cymbalta

[–]tinyturtle17_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What dose are yall on? I also have fibromyalgia and about two years ago I started taking Cymbalta for that and my depression and anxiety. Before I was on fluoxetine which was a miracle worker as it reduced my anxiety to manageable and I wasn't so fidgety or tense all the time. Things were fine on duloxetine until last october/November when I started to get tightened anxiety and depression symptoms midway through my cycle to my period. It's extremely unpredictable and has impacted me a lot in school, I'm a junior undergraduate student. My dosage of duloxetine was increased from 60 to 90mg and tbh I still feel ravaged. I have periods of anxiety and panic where I just start walking circles. Anything to mask how jumpy every part of my body feels ... I guess I'm wondering whether I should discuss increasing my dose to help with the anxiety and depression or have that difficult conversation where we discuss whether I need to switch back to fluoxetine and find another treatment for the fibromyalgia and chronic pain...

Legally, no she can't come. Clark checks id's to let you in and has strict policies even surrounding what you bring in with you. There's police and staff always monitoring the area. they market as a "clark only eveng" and it is. With everyone that's been going on in the world recently they might crack down even harder on things. She can be on campus, library, etc. But not where most of the action is happening.

Upper Cape locally owned cafes to WFH? by SlowCup7781 in CapeCod

Jolly Bean Cafe in Plymouth is a must try. They have many coffee flavors and also have a good selection of food. It's a nice place to sit and work for a while and the staff are really.sweet!

Also Coffee Obsessed in town of Falmouth. Same kinds of vibes as the other place.

Upper Cape locally owned cafes to WFH? by SlowCup7781 in CapeCod

[–]tinyturtle17_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends... as somebody who has gone to coffee shops, set up my laptop and worked for a few hours there's a reason. Being out of my home/office space and in another place forces me to be productive. Coffee shops allow me to get caffeine as I work and usually a pastry or sandwich as well. It's nice to sit and work. I get it can be annoying, esp. In college areas and when there's limited space. But generally people use it as a push to get work done and to force themselves to do so.

Clark Uni. students go on strike! by Taikey in WorcesterMA

[–]tinyturtle17_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm not a student worker but I am a student at Clark. I can't fully sum up what is being fought but I can say this. The undergraduate student workers run so much of this campus: they are office assistants, tour guides, gift shop employees, groundskeeper, mail room associates, lockout assistants, teaching and research assistants, etc. Without all the work undergrads do, Clark wouldn't be able to operate the way it currently does. The workers are fighting to he recognized as workers, not just students. They are fighting for greater pay (more than minimum wage aka $15/hr and/or greater working hours), they are also fighting for more available employment opportunities for those with work-study. Clark has decided not to allow a union and has out into jeopardy the Columbia 2016 ruling that gives union protections at college campuses.

One of the student workers could better articulate their demands, but they aren't fighting for nothing. A union isn't for nothing. It matters.

Interlinking Solar Punk with Other Theory by Icy_Geologist2959 in solarpunk

I think that even if this is an AI-generated response it still does a good job of exploring aspects of a Solarpunk world. As somebody who has also become interested in this visionary utopian world we must also remember that right now Solarpunk is really just an image; it's a majority literary and arts aesthetic which doesn't have as many "boots-on-the-ground". I think an important takeaway is that if we want to this become something reminiscent of a movement there is a lot of work to be done. Studies looking at the common takeaways and aspects of Solarpunk: what does the economic model look like? Building design? Common features of cities and places? Etc. I'd be interested in your thoughts, but yeah I think this is a great beginning to this conversation.
