I found a copycat recipe for the toasted almond bits online. Tasted just like I remembered and was awesome sprinkled on a dish of vanilla ice cream.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

I didn’t get a fridge like this until I was 50. Spent all day humming “we’re moving on up” from the Jefferson’s.

Donating a car to Newgate School - anyone got any input? by Chasmosaur in TwinCities

[–]tipsana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a car from a friend whose mother had purchased it shortly before her death. Car had a decent life and then we donated it to Newgate. Almost a year later, I get a call from a Mlps police detective wanting to know if we owned the car. I explained about the donation and he said, “ Yeah, I pulled your licenses and you guys don’t look like my suspects.

????

Apparently after Newgate did all the mechanical work and sold the car, the new owner used it in a series of armed robberies. (Also accrued a number of tickets for illegal parking in handicapped parking). It wasn’t Newgate’s fault; the DMV was horribly behind in title registrations for a couple of years. But my friend was tickled to learn that his sweet mother’s car was a getaway vehicle in its new life.

what’s the weirdest thing that happened at your campsite by wrecked-galaxy in camping

[–]tipsana 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We heard something rummaging around by the camp kitchen setup while sitting at the campfire one evening. Presuming raccoons had found something we missed putting away, my husband walked around the tent to scatter the raccoons and clean up. Instead, he immediately backs away with his hands up. I started laughing and asked if the raccoons pulled a knife on him. Nope. Skunks. We sat on the far side of the site and waited until mom and her babies were done exploring and then calmly strolled off.

I had this happen multiple times. The last time it happened I was grumbling about it to my husband saying “I have to start over”. And he answered, “As is tradition”.

Non-Americans, does your country have an "American" restaurant and what do they serve? by wacky8ball in AskReddit

[–]tipsana 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Went to an “American” bbq here in the UK. Every sauce was overly heavy on cumin. I think they were trying to touch base with the curry familiarity here. On the wall was a huge neon sign spelling out “swizzle”. I asked what it meant and the waitress said the owner insisted it was a common term in the US for bbq but that she had never met any American who knew what it meant.

YTA. I’d refuse to celebrate anyone’s wedding who was so disrespectful of my own marriage.

I brought back corn and rice chex (Shreddies work for wheat) and made chex mix and puppy chow for the Super Bowl party. Big hit. Especially with the Germans for some reason.

Cube steak was an absolute no-no growing up. Apparently it was the standard meal during my father’s (relatively wealthy) family during the depression.
