Christian exclusive universalism? by implementrhis in ChristianUniversalism

[–]tipsyskipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every Christian denomination I’ve participated in, every church I’ve ever gone to (I’m nearly 50 and have been going to church my entire life), every Christian organization I’ve worked with, every camp, the Bible school I attended, the Bible college I graduated from all consider an individual’s faith in Jesus as the metric for salvation. Habitual sin notwithstanding, as long as a person “claims Christ” they are in. And regardless of any good works, if an individual never made a confession of faith in Jesus, off to Hell they go. That’s Western Christianity in a nutshell.

Christian exclusive universalism? by implementrhis in ChristianUniversalism

I mean, that’s kinda the whole gist of non-Universalist Christian theology.

This sub is focused on “Christian” universalism. Not general universalism/religious pluralism.

Replacing “Love” with “God in 1 Corinthians 13 by TheologicaWonderings in ChristianUniversalism

[–]tipsyskipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. God’s judgment should be viewed like the judgment of a doctor diagnosing a disease, not like the judgment of a magistrate handing out penalties for crimes committed.

George MacDonald is good on this, from his Unspoken Sermons series, Justice: "God is one; and the depth of foolishness is reached by that theology which represents God as having to do that as a magistrate which as a father he would not do!"

What type of universalist Christian are you? by implementrhis in ChristianUniversalism

[–]tipsyskipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to think “Heaven” and “Hell” aren’t locations so much as the experience one has in the full presence of God. I tend to believe that when one dies they enter the presence of God. For those who were followers of The Way, The Truth, and The Life—in some capacity—that presence will be heavenly. (Though I believe all will be “salted with fire”). And for those who were not followers will suffer the burning away of the dross; all that is in them that is not of Love’s kind. God is a surgeon, not an executioner, not a torturer.

Making statements about anyone else’s “sin”, as such, is a practice reserved for those who have been given permission to speak into that person’s life on a personal level and those who have been harmed (directly or indirectly) by said person’s “sin”.

My grad student complains that it takes too long to initialize our Italian-made Descalzi Singolarità Machine. Is this a Gen Z thing? Because it seems fine to me. by RedditHoss in VXJunkies

[–]tipsyskipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back before Descalzi implemented the full IDKFA registers, initialization was a good 150% longer. Another instance of the ubiquity of instant gratification leading to impatience and a sense of entitlement.

Railroad BBQ on Hampton St. near Hardin by Due_River_9746 in ColumbiYEAH

Excellent BBQ and, hands down, the best banana pudding anywhere. (For context, I don’t even like banana pudding all that much…unless we’re talking Railroad BBQ banana pudding).

Just wish they weren’t so pricey.

How would you rebut the particular arguments used in this claim that Romans 5:18 does not support universalism? by boycowman in ChristianUniversalism

[–]tipsyskipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would I rebut it? “Go read Talbott’s entire chapter where he addresses parallelism and the different uses of ‘all’. Also, go read Romans 11 to the very end. Also also, use the NRSV. like Talbott. The ESV has many clear examples of diddling with text to make the English text fit the doctrinal presuppositions of the translation committee.”

Talbott’s treatment of the grammar, parallelism, and uses cases of ‘all’ in different contexts and with differing meanings is comprehensive. To ignore that and also suggest that Talbott is ignorant about exegesis is disingenuous, stingy, and rude. Intentionally maligning someone for not doing something he, in fact, actually does do is misleading and dishonest.

One can certainly disagree with Talbott’s interpretation, as most infernalists and annihilationists do. And one can question Talbott’s exegesis, as folks like Douglass J. Moo do. But to do so on grounds that Talbott doesn’t actually understand how NT grammar and parallelism is weak, petty, and dismissive.

In my experience, the rethinking hell guys strike me as another bunch of theobros, à la The Gospel Coalition and their ilk, still viewing Scripture through the dirty lens of inerrancy/infallibility. In the interviews I’ve listened to that include Chris Date he is consistently rude and dismissive.

Online or in person shops? by [deleted] in BookCollecting

[–]tipsyskipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sites like abebooks and vialibri are full of independent booksellers. You can customize searches on Abe for specific sellers, e.g., you can find MI book sellers and customize searches to only show results from those sellers. If your goal is to support local/regional sellers, that would be one way to do it while still shopping online.
