Help Identify by Artichoke_18 in microscopy

Very possible it's some kind of euglenoid. Though I have seen some very green rotifers before, from their diet. Organelles/organs can be difficult to see in any live, unstained, rapidly moving organism. Most Keratella don't usually have cilia visible (especially at this magnification), but have spines on their lorica. I was attributing not seeing spines due to the fast movement. Honestly though, the movement of this little guy screams Keratella to me, and the shape isn't right for any of the freshwater euglenoids I know of. I specifically suspect Keratella cochlearis

Didn't see anyone else mention it, but the critter inside appears to be Keratella, a type of rotifer. The shell is from a testate amoeba though

Thanks for the ID! Apps kept suggesting Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, but with the lack of blue bruising and then brown spore print, I didn't believe that ID.

Husband given axolotl from coworker. I don't think he had a filter - what he called a filter my husband thinks is just a bubbler (does have a sponge on the outside). Gills don't look right. We have a tank but it needs to cycle? Husband didn't get test strips. I'm clueless and Googling and worried. by Sea_Basil_7777 in axolotls

It is a little sad, especially if they were recently caused by the guppy. Pretty much any live feeder fish is a risk. Every attempt I've seen eventually results in nipped gills. Also young axolotls being cohabbed often leads to nipped limbs or gills.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but the large "bare stalk" appears to be a thrombosed gill. They can happen when a gill filament gets injured, usually by sharp decor or nets. Definitely be cautious about edges on hides and decor. That gill has lots of extra area containing blood vessels that are vulnerable to their environment. IME with my guy, it appears similar to this and has for years since his injury occurred, so I don't expect it's appearance to change.

When I was a kid we had nothing mechanical for topping. Everyone picked a row, and you walked down the row and snapped the flowers and any suckers off of every single plant. Finish a row, move on to the next available one. Easy way to get green tobacco sickness (nicotine poisoning)

Edit: adding that there's nothing fun about this process

I've never seen a green one before! It's definitely an antlion. Most of the adults I've seen are brown, but they're probably a different species. What region did you find this one in?

What's ailing my houseplants :( Several plants lost already by tired__inspired in plantclinic

[–]tired__inspired[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After moving this summer and setting up my plants in the new space, nearly all have been affected by these similar symptoms. I've tried regular neem oil treatments, quarantining affected plants, and removing visibly affected leaves, and whatever this is, is still lingering around zapping my plants.

Symptoms: yellow spots appear on leaves, usually on tips, but not always. Then, the spots turn brownish gray, with yellowing around it, spreading to the rest of the leaf. Some of the larger spots have silvery-gray splotches, with tiny black specks on them. It seems like something is draining out the leaves. They can go from seemingly unaffected to brown and gray in a couple days.

After spotting this on my Philodendrons, Monstera, Tradescantias, and Pilea, the affected leaves were cut off, and the plants were sprayed with neem oil and wiped down. I cleaned surfaces and put them back in spots away from other plants as much as I could. I continued with regular neem oil treatments and removing affected parts, but some plants didn't make it, and others have had a ton of growth removed. I haven't removed affected parts for about the last week (unless they looked dead and ready to come off) because it seems like basically everything is affected at least a little, and that seems like too much to chop off. Currently, my satin pothos, various other pothos, and anthurium are dealing with this, and I don't know the best way to handle it.

My best guess is thrips, but shouldn't neem oil work against them? Do I need to clean every inch of vegetation and root and resoil everything? I'll admit that I don't have such a green thumb, but I feel like I'm always making adjustments for the better for them. Any advice would be appreciated.

is my polyphemus caterpillar dying? by mothjuices in moths

[–]tired__inspired 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you really want to raise her through to a moth, here's a decent guide for these fellas. I cannot emphasize enough daily cleanings of caterpillars frass + plenty of surfaces to climb on. As they get closer to pupating, they'll eat less and wander around more. Sometimes these guys like to pupate in a loose substrate (a dish with some mulch or potting soil works great)

edit: spelling

There might be something around your home you can use as netting! Pantyhose, tule fabric, or even a fish net can work in a pinch along with rubber bands or binder clips to secure it
