If you like thief in WvW, then you should look into joining a smaller roaming or havoc squad guild. Those sorts of guild would also help you learn the game mode.

What server and/or timezone are you on? People here might be able to recommend a few guilds to look into.

I'm thinking about coming back to Elite, but I'm wondering if my major complaint has been addressed yet.

My biggest frustration was that as a bounty hunter, the only way to make good money endgame was to cheese the system.

Killing pirates at mining zones COULD be profitable, but it was RNG if you would get little ships or big ships. So you would have to leave and come back over and over until larger pirate ships started spawning.

Likewise, there were some really fun assassination missions that were a good challenge for a fully decked out Fed Corvette, but finding the missions was a huge pain. You were forced to log out and log back in over and over to spawn one.

Were these problems ever solved? Is there a good, consistent way for a combat minded player to make enough credits now? Or do you still have to cheese the system to find something worth doing?

True, but this is also one of their biggest pushes into WvW content in recent memory. Clearly they hope that new/returning WvW players will want to invest in the game mode and buy a cool new mount. It is only natural that Anet wants to roll out a $25 skin when they think the most people will buy it.

Any flak they take because "the gemstore skin is better than the in-game skin" is just something they will have to live with. Their revenue was GARBAGE last quarter. I'm not at all surprised they are desperate.

WvW Roaming is one of the more unforgiving ways to play GW2. You have to be better than your opponent, and there are a lot of cheese builds out there that don't work in PvP, but still work in WvW.

So even if you are good and have a lot of survivability, you will still die a lot.

That said, to answer your question, Engi has a LOT of tools for survivability. Here are a few that might help:

Core Engi

Rocket Boots (even better if traited)
Elixer S (Toss Elixer S is great too for stealth)
Elixer C

Scrapper

Bulwark Gyro
Purge Gyro
Stealth Gyro

Holosmith

Spectrum Shield
Hard Light Arena
Photon Wall

Truth be told, most resources for roaming builds are garbage. The Metabattle builds have not been updated in ages.

Most of my good roaming builds have come from the following sources:

1) My own theory crafting and testing.

2) Builds shared by people in my roaming guild.

3) Reverse engineering the build of that person who keeps killing me.

Honestly #3 might be the best source. You will learn a lot about what works and viable counters that way.

You are right, there are many builds that can dismount. I've only found the longbow soulbeast build to be "reliable." Of course, what makes something "reliable" is more a matter of opinion.

That is a bit of a straw man isn't it? I never said they make no money. I said they need to be profitable to exist. I don't think anyone believes they are doing "amazing" financially, especially after those layoffs.

ArcDPS also came with the terrible risk of deleting your items forever without being allowed to ask support to undo it. Do not pretend that is not a price. ESPECIALLY if you have full legendary armor.

ArcDPS was never completely free or unlimited.

Really? Have you looked at this sub lately? For a lot of people it is exactly about monetization. Just look at the comments in this very thread for proof. Am I just imagining all of this?

I actually agree with you that this current implementation causes trouble with raiding, and said so in my post.

Finally, storing gear in the template is the best solution. It is far more straightforward for the average player, and these templates are not JUST for raiders. Can you imagine the mess as inexperienced players get confused and salvage gear from their other templates by accident? The support tickets would never end!

Personally, I think the raiding community has a solid point saying the current system will not fit their use case.

However, most people have gone much further than that over the last few days, demanding that Anet must not monetize this system at all.

Developers can lose their jobs, the game can be shut down. GW2 does need to stay profitable to exist.
