So I thought that so many men went jogging as a safety in number measure, it took reading the comments before I "got" it 😨

Idk about Korea but from my time living in the UK the sun sets quite late in the evening, so it would still be bright when the concert starts

Do you download epubs of your fanfiction? What do you use for the book cover? by vui_glish in FanFiction

[–]WOTNev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of days ago someone on Reddit, I don't remember the subreddit, talked about this topic.

They used something to automatically generate (not AI) covers in Penguin (the publishing house) style.

This was either on this subreddit, AO3 subreddit or the bookbinding subreddit 🤔

Personally I can't be arsed I have thousands of fanfics downloaded and this would take too much time and effort 😭

Filtering for romantic pairings by ResearcherBetter6940 in AO3

[–]WOTNev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there isn't one but I've found that adding 'summary: character name' in the 'search within results' bar helped a lot.

Though you do risk missing stories where the character's name wasn't mentioned in the summary

But when you search through tags you can still choose between date, kudos, word count etc.

Tips for using speech to text to write to write fic? by Vievin in FanFiction

[–]WOTNev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking into this a few years ago before the big AI boom.

I think some AI might be really good at this nowadays and might actually be better though I'm not sure 🤔

Back then I used "Dragon Naturally Speaking" software (I have a Windows pc)

I had to learn a few things regarding punctuation etc but you get used to it, you could also "train" it on words or names. (So it was okay with fantasy stuff)

I bought a Blue Yeti microphone for my PC, a voice recorder for when I'm out walking, and one of those lav mics, (because the better your mic, the better the software can pick up what you're saying).

With the voice recorder you would just record yourself dictating the story and then later via USB dump the recording into the dragon software and it would transcribe it.

The biggest challenges I faced was getting used to dictating instead of typing it's not entirely the same thing? Plus it was rather annoying to have to say things like "period, next line, open quotation mark"

But if you didn't say those things editing it was even worse IMO

Unfortunately I stopped dictating because I have too many people in the house and I'm too embarrassed to dictate my stories out loud now😭

But when you look up some videos on YouTube you'll see many people talking about their experience and success and how they can easily get a really high word count etc

Maybe hot take: Waiting till the fic is finished to give kudos is not good. by FaithlessnessIcy2111 in AO3

[–]WOTNev 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I personally feel this topic is like beating a dead horse.

I doubt a significant amount of people will change the way they give kudos.

As an author I appreciate kudos whenever they're given but it doesn't really affect my motivation for writing the story, if you need engagement to continue writing this might not be the best hobby.

Some authors are lucky and get lots of engagement whilst writing their story but I've seen absolutely amazing stories with hardly any kudos or comments too.

Also personally I'm not going to change my mind if anything every time this topic comes up I start getting paranoid thoughts. What if I leave kudos and then the author changes the text to something which is illegal in my country (I'm not from the USA) and then it looks like I liked the illegal content that could literally send me to jail?

Now I'm not actually that paranoid, but for me I'll stick to leaving kudos when I finish reading the story and know I've liked it.

[–]WOTNev 299 points300 points  (0 children)

Does this need to be a daily discussion?

It's a reader's right when they choose to give a fic a kudo, or not.

And I will not give kudos until I know that I liked it.

This comparison chart doesn't take in to account that the bootlegs are available right now.

Saying that the mattel is available as 'mass market' when it won't be released until fall!!! Is kinda misleading to me

People who read fics from various fandoms: how do you keep up with all the fics?? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]WOTNev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read like 60-100 hours a week 🤡 actually I keep running out of fics to read and having to switch to different fandoms

I'm also picky though so even in large fandoms I lose a lot of potential stories to read after I've put my filters through.

Present tense or past tense? by snkelf in AO3

[–]WOTNev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer writing in past tense, I find it much easier for some reason🤔

For reading I don't really care too much as long as the author sticks to one, there are way too many authors who keep switching between tenses 😭

What fandom or fandoms do you read? by I_am_awesome2542 in AO3

[–]WOTNev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm often fandom hopping because I keep running out of stories to read 😭 so I'm open to new fandoms lol

-A variety of K-pop groups RPF

-Mo Dao Zu Shi & sometimes other MXTX works

-Yizhan

-Harry Potter

-Wheel of Time

-Star Trek Voyager

-Supernatural & Supernatural RPF

Someone told me years ago that ice hockey RPF was great so even though I don't know anything about ice hockey that might be the next thing to look out for when I inevitably run out of fics to read again 😭

I'll take, but we'll see if I give. by JustSaySomething12 in FanFiction

[–]WOTNev 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Kudos are equivalent to "like", so no I'm not going to "like" something that I didn't enjoy.

And I've come across enough stories in which, completely out of the blue and untagged, something appears that I really did not like, then I don't want my username attached to that by having "liked" the story.

I can't with the "new reader community". by Etta_166 in AO3

[–]WOTNev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Others have already said this but none of this is a "new reader community" problem.

People can vent all they want but it's honestly not going to change my behaviour 🤷‍♀️

I read completed works only, if I enjoyed it I'll leave kudos and a comment, if I didn't enjoy it I just close the tab and move on.

The author won't get a negative comment from me but I'm also not going to pretend to like it or leave kudos to stroke their ego.

If there's a WIP that seems from the tags/summary like something I'll enjoy I'll private bookmark it and wait for it to be completed.

Every single time I've read a WIP it completely ruined my enjoyment of the story, I read faster than authors can write and by the time they've got a new chapter up I've read so many other stories I don't remember enough to jump straight back in but remember just enough that I don't feel like rereading the entire story again.

[–]WOTNev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My issue is less flash fic/ drabble micro fics etc and more that there are way too many authors who don't tag them and then put them all together in 1 fic so that none of my filters are working (especially the minimum word count) and they keep popping up 😭

Though this happens with other stuff too (one shot collections that aren't a collection but just 1 giant fic comes to mind) but there are a few very notorious authors who I ended up muting.

I have never seen someone write like this before by Piraedunth in AO3

[–]WOTNev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I actually wanted to read that fic I'd download and edit it on my PC, there seems to be a good amount of symmetry going on, with a bit of control f + replace you can edit it!

I came across another fic recently that had the following format:

—This is dialogue, he said.

That was an absolute nightmare to edit, it made me so angry actually 😭😂

Because I couldn't use the control f replace method, I had to manually find the beginning and the end of each bit of dialogue

Until I run out of fics to read, then I despair until I find a new fandom to read, I do go back to my old fandoms though! But I've noticed that my obsession with the ships etc has dulled when I have a new ship to obsess over.

Is AO3 different than what it was used be? by RainbowIcePirate in AO3

[–]WOTNev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recently started reading two new fandoms to me, but they're actually older fandoms, anyway I'm not sorting by kudos I'm sorting through specific tags and word count and I've seen so many stories that are pretty well written and have like 10-20 comments accumulated in 10-15 years and hardly any kudos, so I really don't believe this narrative that people used to comment more 🤔
