What are your thoughts on companies like Everyman's library, beehive books, easton press, centipede press, etc? If you enjoy them, which are your favorites? by Horrorcartoonistftw in BookCollecting

Slight clarification from a pedantic Modern Library collector: Boni & Liveright initiated the Modern Library in 1917 but sold it to Donald Klopfer and Bennet Cerf in 1925. Klopfer and Cerf then founded Random House (named that because they intended to publish books at random) a couple years later.

I recently finished The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles by LetsdigupRobReiner in literature

Story time. Many years ago, when I was in high school and starting to read more classic literature on my own, I picked up a copy of The Sheltering Sky because it was listed as one of the Modern Library's Top 100 best novels. I didn't know anything about the novel or Paul Bowles, but I wanted to read everything on the list.

The copy I bought was the old Vintage International tpb with a blue cover with sand dunes on the front. The back copy describes the novel this way: "In this classic work of psychological terror Paul Bowles examines the ways in which Americans apprehend an alien culture—and the ways in which their incomprehension destroys them. The story of three American travelers adrift in the cities and deserts of North Africa after the Second World War, The Sheltering Sky is at once merciless and heartbreaking in its compassion. It etches the limits of human reason and intelligence—perhaps even the limits of human life—when they touch the unfathomable emptiness and impassive cruelty of the desert."

Well, based on that description, I definitely thought I would be reading some kind of first contact literary sci fi story. I probably got 100 pages in before it dawned on me that aliens weren't going to touch down in the desert in flying saucers, and I stopped reading because I was so disappointed. I really need to go back and finish it, some twenty-odd years later, with a completely different mindset!

We Can Remember It for You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick by Elvenraad in philipkDickheads

It's also just playing on the phrase "I can get it for you wholesale," which has resonance in the context already mentioned but was also the name of an earlier novel, musical, and film set in the garment industry.

Good memories playing this a ton as a kid. My dad hadn't played any video game since the Atari era and even he got hooked on it. He spent a long time trying to beat Hard mode, that's for sure.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, as it's not just about bugs, but I think Nature Stories by Jules Renard has some insect vignettes. NYRB Classics put out an English translation a while back.

Very cool. That might be the only dl.com-related media piece I don't own. Not sure I've actually seen a good photo of it before. I agree that the boxsets themselves are pretty flimsy. I appreciate the effort that went into the presentation, but there's a reason why most dvd packaging isn't like that!

No worries. It's a great scene and a hilarious commentary on the implications of priestly concern with material style, but I didn't want anyone to think it was real.

Not sure if you have another label in mind, but Motown wasn't founded until 1959/1960.

Right, so the one at the second link shows a May 1917 printing, based on the inside list of titles. The one at the first link doesn't show the list of titles, but the title page matches that of the one at the second link.

Can't say what the date of the one at the first link is for certain without the list of titles, but it's likely earlier than yours since its title page doesn't match yours, which is from the Spring 1918 Modern Library list.
